He was an excellent club manager in the 80s and 90s with success and trophies across Europe. English fans never appreciated him or fully recognised his worth. Yes, I know about English "golden generation", but look at what Italy, France, Portugal, Argentina, Brazil and Spain ALSO had at the time. And the criticism leveled at him for his preference of "old-fashioned" 4-4-2 means nothing. Managers like Diego Simeone and Roberto Mancini won trophies with 4-4-2 AFTER Eriksson

The problem was that 4-4-2 didn't suit the players we had. Moving Scholes out to the left, to accommodate both Gerrard and Lampard, who both at club level enjoy much more freedom to get forward were heavily restricted and often out-numbered in many games against sides that played 3 in midfield.

So glad you brought this point up. The teams back then were absolutely stacked, almost every position consisted of a XI legend. Sven got to much flak considering the teams he played, and the results he had gotten. England's golden players were all at each others necks in the premier league, it was no wonder they didn't win, because they didn't get along off the pitch. Terry sleeping with other players wives, Lampard and Gerrard were too competitive. Nothing clicked, bo one enjoyed each others company. Its a bloody shame that England team never won anything......

Yes Sven seems to br very calm & composed. As a young player you would be very relaxed playing under him. It reminds me of something the legendary Brian Clough said. As long as you are relaxed you're talent will come through on the pitch. Or something to that affect.

He was a 90s manager in charge in a different era. Same as Capello. Mourinho winning the champions league with Porto changed football. 4-4-2 was outdated teams were playing 3-5 in the midfield which as Mourinho says always beats 2. But look at Mourinho and benitiez. There outdated now and now you don’t need strikers to win leagues anymore.

Ironically Mourinho is outdated now lol Sven was still a very good manager he got a rubbish Manchester City side who really should've been relegated the poor form under Stuart Pearce who also lost their star player Joey Barton the previous summer and got them a Europa League finish the season after. He has my respect

4-4-2 became outdated around 2006. By that time Sven had left as England manager.

@@zackolmert9622 Not really they were playing then formations abroad. When Mourinho came to Chelsea he showed how outdated the 4-4-2 formation was and that was 2004-05. The national teams were all playing 4-2-3-1 formations and 4-3-3 or Italy 3-5-2. Alex Ferguson had to adapt the 4-4-2 way of playing but I can’t remember a team that beat the best with a flat 4-4-2 formation after Mourinho came to the prem.

Such a warm and charismatic man. Football needs more characters like him and less of the 'everybody look at me' types like Klopp, Simeone, Conte, Mourinho, etc.

You want all managers have calm and boring personality? Different opinion here, all manager you mentioned bring colours to football. I don't mind football have different personality people, that's what life about and that's make life interesting.

The only thing I blame Sven for is picking lampard and Gerrard together...it clearly didn't work...on paper it looked great but it didn't work...pick one of scholes lampard Gerrard with hargreaves or butt

Funny enough I remember the late terry Venables the heric coach of euro 1996 saying that lampard and Gerrard wouldn't work , it was on the back pages all over the world,I think after that he was blacklisted in the media ,never invited to be a pundit during any Competition.

The only difference between this guy & Southgate is luck, & the world cup proved that - as soon as England played a good team they lost. This whole 'togetherness' and 'culture' doesn't mean you can beat good teams. This narrative that Gareth has done an amazing job because of a SF, Final of Euros etc needs to be put in context - England got to those stages because of VERY favourable draws. Arguably losing to Croatia in the 2018 world cup should be seen as a failure. Sven lost to golden generations of Brazil & Portugal squads when his team was riddled with injuries - that's why they did not progress beyond QFs from 2002-2006.
