Yeah, ‘Ole Mozart had all that crystalline sublime packed down in his young tender soul. What an expansive rich inner life to enjoy so early in life. Perhaps there was too much white hot brilliance for his fragile frame hence his brief life span. What had he lived to at least fifty? Maybe he would had attained a cutting edge modernity that exceeded Beethoven’s. The power of the spirit of man is quite boundless. I surmise he would have broke through boundaries of musical expression into cosmic regions of otherworldly beauty and maybe even bizarre profundity. All in the height of good taste and with peerless grace. What a world! PWG

Amazing! I never heard Richter in a Mozart concerto! In fact this was Mozart's first "Own" composed piano Concerto. The prevous four concerto's were adaptions of other compositions.

The wonder is not that a young genius of 17 wrote this piece, intended most likely just for enterteinment. The wonder is that a 78-year old genius instilled into this piece meaning and profundity.

It's slightly slow rhythm, right on tune, gives each sound a deeper meaning and durable emotion. Richter was one of the GOAT. Well high in the Olympus of immortal musicians. I love to listen to his nr 5 everyday. It has everything to fill me with joy. The Andante ma un poco adagio 11:14 ... is magnificent, majestic, splendid, impressive, imposing, awe-inspiring.

The earliest Mozart piano concertos might often have been played by Mozart and just a violin and double bass - one of each - in a small German town. One could always guarantee this accompaniment even in the poorest towns (Eric Blom, Mozart's letters). It is certainly not a concerto I would listen to often - whomsoever played it. Richter was about 78 when he played this (1993) - he died in 1997 (Wiki). The third movement cadenza must be the longest in record!!!!

Mozart toured much of Italy, Austria, Germany, and France, even England while very young - the reference mentioned Germany specifically, although I think it was in a life of Mozart, that I am trying to relocate after a move.

Ever listen to the Arthur Schoonderwoerd recordings of the Mozart concertos? It captures just that, he uses the sparsest orchestra imaginable (on both early and later concertos). They're fascinating and I love them, but I'm sure it would infuriate some people because they're SUPER period-y. The recording for No. 5 actually has an alternate version with a harpsichord.

Vraiment ? Je ne vois pas en quoi. J'ai ensuite regardé dans mon Wyzewa et de St.Foix "Tout porte à croire que Mozart, jusqu'a la date de son installation à Vienne, n'a point connu ces concertos du maître hambourgeois". Ils expliquent ensuite "C'est à Chrétien Bach que revient le mérite d'avoir définitivement adjoint un second sujet à ce sujet principal de l'ancien concerto de Wagenseil et Emmanuel Bach". Ils parlent ensuite de Dittersdorf, qui ajouta systématiquement au sujet A , appartenant en commun à l'orchestre et au clavier, deux sujets C et D, non moins étendus et constituants le passage le plus considérable d'un mouvement tout entier. Mozart à partir de ce concerto de 1773, et ce jusqu'au concerto pour clarinette de 1791, se conformera à ce schéma. Mais ces sujets C et D, qui chez Dittersdorf ne se distinguaient que par des allures un peu plus "concertantes", vont devenir chez Mozart les parties les plus profondément musicales, avec une intensité d'expression et une beauté mélodique qui témoignent de son originalité et de sa supériorité sut tous les autres compositeurs de concertos contemporains".

Pianist off course. Maybe it is harder but at the end it pays off and it is a bigger satisfaction.

Unfortunately the balance of the recording ( solist and orchestra ) is not good . We are too close to the piano .There is problem of dynamic.

It is a real recording - great pianists in old age do make errors on the stage. I saw Pollini play Beethoven in his 70s and he made many errors - still got a standing ovation though.

Beethoven used to play Mozart piano concertos very often . I imagine him playing this concerto that way. Don’t forget this D dur.
