We have the Holley Dominator ECU installed in our shop SVO. Now that we have the ability to control timing and fuel we do our back to back comparisons to the factory ford ecu. After we have those tests complete we turn the boost up and see how much we can get out of this little 4 cylinder.

Love this !! Love that you did it back to back like this. Doesn’t really matter what it made. These motors like timing so much because the head sucks so bad, timing helps. I’d super love to see everything identical, but swapped to E85. I had a 84’ swapped with a 2.3T and it had a Benz turbo diesel fmic and it still heat soaked that cooler in a single pull. Def would be amazing info to see the back pressure in the turbo. Anyway, love the video, hope there is more. Love the data.

Great info, I’ve got a turbo 2.3 in a Sandrail and have wondered if a Holley would improve things. You clearly showed it will. Thanks for the effort to share such solid details with your experience.

Great 2.3L Turbo video! I'm building an intercooled 2.5L Turbo (Ranger crank) for my '84 GT Turbo. Love watching you dial in the boost/timing on the little 4 cylinder! (But next time, please lose the 'elevator music'... it's like chinese water torture while watching the video.)

Great video! I have an 86 SVO that I am pulling all the 4cyl stuff out and putting a coyote motor in it. My 4cyl has a lot of performance stuff done to it though.

I have a couple 2.3t cars I need to know how you made the holley work!!! I'm at the point I need stand alone and I've been thinking pimpx but I'm familiar with holley programming from a buddy's ls turbo car so would love to have a holley on all mine

These 1984 SVO mustangs made 175 hp stock and by 1986 they made 210 hp

The numbers you list are factory flywheel numbers. A chassis dyno measures rear wheel horsepower. Rear wheel horsepower is what your car puts down to the road, after drivetrain losses, not what goes in the brochure. You may have noticed our SVO is in less than pristine condition. Our car was rated at 175 flywheel horsepower. However, baseline 2 was 156 wheel horsepower which is (approximately) 195 flywheel horsepower. With the Holley it made 182, which is approximately 227 flywheel horsepower.

I really wish you had done a video of the Holley install. I am thinking of switching from my ancient SDS to Holley, but I really do not know if I can handle the install.

The Holley install on this particular vehicle is not particular easy. It does necessitate the use of a crank trigger to get the timing functionality and we had to make a harness out of a cast off LS1 harness. Its definitely something we made happen because we really wanted to do it.

@@Scramspeed Yeah, I kind of figured that. My car has an older SDS EM3 system, which when it was put in the car was the only plug and play system available. It is rather primitive, uses a handheld tuning interface, and does not do any self-tuning (aside from closed loop cruise on a narrowband) nor does it datalog. I can upgrade the PCM to the current version, which is 3 generations down the road, and get 8 channels of datalogging and better closed loop, but nothing like a Holley. I can go to Pimp X and I am familiar with tuning MS systems, but I know from being in the LS turbo world just how much easier Holley is. The car is pretty heavily modified, but just so hard to tune with the SDS since I don't have a dyno like you. If I did, I could certainly use this system as I would not really need to log it as all the needed data would be on the dyno. I am not very good with electrical wiring, so the Holley is probably beyond my wheelhouse. LOL.

Unfortunately, there isn't a drop-on solution. We (heavily) customized an LS1 engine harness we had lying around. We will be installing a crank trigger setup shortly.

Great video and analysis! Just for reference, the stock boost setting (on prem switch) was 14#, and total max timing was probably around 20 (the 86 PE ECU was around 15# and 23 total timing). Would like to know if your fuel pressure stayed constant the whole time with the screwy two pump set up, and curious what duty cycle the stock 30# injectors were at. I still think your ‘best mod’ will come from 3” down pipe and back, I made 222rwhp dynojet when my 86 had 60k miles, 18# boost, 3” down pipe, cone filter, and bumped the timing up 3 degrees. Keep it up!

@Brett Yarborough Stinger Performance carries a version of the Megasquirt 3 called the PIMP, that has a large following/forum based, or you could just let Scram Speed install the Holley if close enough.

Swap out the LA3, toss the brown tops out for some siemans deka 80lb low imp batch fire injectors, toss in a stinger performance PimpX and upgrade your fuel pressure regulator, get rid of the VAM for GM style IAT and run speed density. You’ll have a literal new car.

We are working on a kit for the 2.3 turbo stuff. We still have a few bugs to sort with the SVO system working perfectly. More content coming soon.

Really enjoyed your SVO dyno videos. Were the mods at that time just the filter and engine management system, with all else stock? That's a very impressive power improvement. I would guess stock early SVO averaged only about 150 WHP at 14 Psi.

Yes, those are the only mods. Please note that we were able to remove the restrictive VAM and replace it with a cone filter, it has a 2011+ V6 Mustang drive by wire throttle body, and has "aftermarket" muffler shop stock diameter exhaust. Exhaust manifold, intake manifold, turbo, cam, longblock, etc are all stock.

LOL. Ackchoooally...., 205 hp is the Ford number for the 1985.5 and 86 models. Our 1984 model was rated at 175 hp from the factory. However, the factory rating is based on a *flywheel* number. As you can see in the video, our chassis dynamometer measures horsepower *at the rear wheels*. Due to parasitic losses through the driveline, the rear wheel number is always lower than the flywheel number. For example, the V8 mustangs of the late 80s were rated at 225hp, and the strongest stock one ever makes 195 rear wheel hp.

That was the baseline pull with 20* of total ignition timing. The car picked up almost another 20 rwhp from there with a couple of degrees of ignition timing, and by the time it had all the timing in it, it was making more horsepower than the car was rated at from the factory. See my response to your other post which discusses the difference between factory rated flywheel horsepower and rear wheel horsepower.

@@bluesky-ud9wg Part of the beauty of systems like Dominator is you can monitor IATs in real time. The IATs weren't high, so there was no need for additional cooling of the intercooler. Perhaps it was because the hood was open, perhaps it is because the runs weren't done back to back. In any case, looking at the logs, we don't believe that adding a fan to the intercooler would have benefitted the power output.
