Your right, the malfunctions are likely caused by the rifle being undergassed. I find that these rifles work best at the 1.3 gas setting, since steel cased ammo is not that consistent. 1.3 is also the factory setting and won't damage your rifle but I would stay away from the 1.5 or 1.7 settings unless you like to shoot in the freezing cold. The malfunctions might also be caused by a loose fitting mag. SVT-40 mags should lock up tight with no wobble, if it wobbles then your mag probably doesn't match your rifle. I fixed this issue on my mag by putting some wiring harness tape around the upper portion of the mag that locks into the rifle. That really helps tighten up the lockup of the mag. You also have to be careful on how you feed rounds from stripper clips too. There is a top and a bottom to Mosin/SVT clips. The straight round signifies the top of the clip and the bent upward round signifies the bottom of the clip. I marked my clips with a sharpie so I know easily which way is which. It doesn't really matter on a Mosin if you put the clip in upside down but it does on a SVT, it will be harder to load the rifle and you will run into malfunctions.

You can see the concussive muzzle blast you were talking about when you are shooting it. Moving around the tree branch and blasting the camera with gas as you are filming it from the front right of the rifle. You can see it perfectly from all directions.

Sexier than a Garand in its own way... Got yourself a beaut! Always enjoy seeing these in action. SGAmmo has some copper washed LVE ammo imported by Wolf right now. A few other places might too.

@@dancortes3062SVTs are great in that unlike most non-AK/non-SKS self-loaders that they happily eat even the most garbage steel ammo with no qualms. The only thing I avoid shooting is corrosive ammo. It’s like a thousand times more of a pain in the ass than cleaning a Mosin and you don’t want corrosion in the gas system.

@@geoechidna I'm already way ahead of you. My SVT has never touched corrosive ammo (at least after the refurb) and it never will. Most corrosive ammo is pretty expensive now anyway, surplus ammo is not like it used to be. Many good SVTs have been ruined by not properly cleaning corrosive ammo out of them.

I've wanted an SVT-40 for the better part of 15 years now. I recently discovered your channel and upon seeing the SVT videos, I said "fuck it, I'm doing it". Thank you for pushing me over the edge to accomplish a life dream and goal, but my wallet hates you. Cant wait to send the bolt forward for the first time!

@@boltforward3611 also, what gas setting are you running for the typical Tula/Red Army steel case 148gr? I’ve seen a lot of people recommend 1.3 and claim it to be the factory setting.

Running it on the absolute lowest gas setting! Like my video says, I tend to undergas my rifles to be gentle on them. I dont mind a malfunction here n there when it comes to these old rifles.@@Snailrider_Actual

@@boltforward3611 Gotcha. I’ll do the same, take it all the way down to the lowest and if it’s completely unreliable there, slowly raise it until it cycles. It’s currently at 1.3, presumably what the previous owner ran it at.

I got my 1943 Izhevsk last year and love mine for all its flaws. Fascinating guns internally, and while still a pain in the ass to take apart I’d say they weren’t insanely complicated for the era. Was basically the blueprint for both the FAL and the AR-18 later on. I have lovingly nicknamed mine the “Line Clearer”, as it’s conclusive blast is so obnoxious to shooters to the left and right of me that they tend to leave the range after a few minutes of standing next to me on the line. 😂

It's better than a Garand in looks. I like mine more than I ever did my Garand, which I sold to fund one of these things. I've never shot for accuracy and I really need to adjust the front sight, but I will say that my Garand was better in that aspect. Well, other than the Garand always hitting WAY low no matter how I adjusted the sights or my aim. Probably something I was doing. My SVT has about the same amount of malfunctions my Garand did, probably less honestly. I think my Garand had a bent op rod despite me only shooting it with an adjustable gas plug. It just never worked right, but the veteran I sold it to loved the thing.

Unfortunately some M1s have "Straightened" op rods due to people using modern commercial ammo, which can damage the op-rods n such. But thankfully the M1 is a tough girl and can be fixed up! I hope you continue to enjoy shooting your SVT

SVTs can be surprisingly accurate. Mine is about 2-3 MOA, which isn’t bad for a wartime production tilting bolt. Get yourself an AK sight tool and you might be surprised how it groups. Will say the vertical shot dispersion is real on these things. They do LOSE accuracy somewhat quickly after heating up.
