After Overland Expo West was over, I headed north out of Flagstaff for my first ever adventure across the dramatic scenery of the southwest, and Arizona did not disappoint. From dirt roads along precarious canyon cliffs to "4x4-only" trails over sand and rock, join me for a very full day exploring just one small corner of this incredible state.

15:17: "Swirly Red Stuff," "Orange and White Twisty Thing." Obviously technical terms common to geology lovers. The rest of use can look up the meanings 😉 lol. Excellent as always Donald. Very happy you had an opportunity to explore that part of the country.

Hahahaha :-) For someone who has such a love for geological features, I am shamefully uneducated in that field. I maybe should get a book or two. :-)

The landforms around Utah is awesome and majestic to see what nature had created for mankind to enjoy. Overlanders who had well-travelled across the Americas may want to explore similar awesome landforms in China especially the Tibetan highlands, Xinjiang and Mongolian deserts and grasslands to experience the vast expanse of landforms it offered. Forget about the cities, to do wild and dispersed boondocking there is an understatement.

The first time I camped in Utah, we pulled in after 2am. Set up camp in the dark & went to sleep. Woke up & climbed out of the tent & was greeted by some amazing sand stone structures all.around us. It was like waking up on another planet. It was the absolute best way to start that trip.

Thanks for the shoutout at 11:24 Donald 😍. It’s interesting to see where you went after Overland Expo. I went to the vermillion cliffs, but we just took this sandy road up to White Pocket. I’m in the middle of watching, so not sure if this is the same road you’re on. Anyways, going to continue watching 😃

Great video! Still: watch out for your thumbs, keep them on the steering wheel, not inside. And I should always wear a seatbelt, even at those low speeds, not just because you're driving solo. I know you're filming, getting in and out of the car all the time, but keep good habits going, they will make a difference when you need it (in case of a roll, or when you hit a boulder or tree while looking around). When filming and talking people aren't focussed on driving. It will help when you can walk away when the car is dent (I once totalled my car at 5mph while looking around and hit a tiny little tree, the impact was way more than I could have imagined). Keep up the good work Donald!

Stunning trip leg. We’ve explored offroad very close to where you camped and found some incredible landscapes. As you said, we never think twice about paying national parks fees as they need the funding. A 12 month pass is $80 and is a great idea when out exploring places with lots of parks- we get one every year!

Hey (again) Donald! Welcome to my backyard!! Looks like you enjoyed your brief dabbling of the area returning from Expo last year. I'm psyched to see you've been a little exposed to this area and are eager to return! That looks like Hite and maybe Bullfrog areas you saw. Some of the north wash area perhaps, southern henry Mountains and maybe the little Egypt area may have been a little out of your way (other side of the lake ;) before getting back on 89A towards Dixie and @matt'soffroad recovery country. The vermillion cliffs area is where they release reared baby Ca Condors, and you NEED to try and score a permit for the Wave!!!!!!!! Man, you'll be SO psyched when you REALLY plan that SE Utah trip!! You were just around the corner from The Maze district of Canyonlands NP (some of the most remote country in N America!!! From north wash and The Maze through Goblin valley and Escalante area and Capital Reef NP, to Kaiparowits Plateau to the Dixie with Zion and Bryce canyons, Southern UT has so much amazingness for your explorations!!! please read up on Drone usage PRIOR to visiting some of these natural areas too. -just a quick tip RE: National Parks and monuments (as well as some protected BLM lands too) ;)- It isn't always apparent or obvious to many people less familiar with these more remote and protected wildernesses and wild landscapes. Cioa for now, hope to see you around soon! -MW (aka asplenic/DRANGED/Superu)- PS, I DIG THE CUATOM BADGE!! 12:08 ;) (looks like I've got some catching up to do!!)

WHOA. The serenity and solitude of that area is out of this world. Also, slightly surprised you don't buy the $80 annual national park pass! I guess it makes sense since you tend to avoid the packed places. Happy trails!
@softroadingthewest
@softroadingthewest 2 жыл бұрын
Well I didn't know I'd be hitting an NPS-managed site. :-) It's literally just a short dead-end road to a couple of trailheads, a boat ramp, and a couple of interesting rock formations along the way. I planned the trip specifically avoiding the national parks this time. It's unlikely I'll hit any other national parks in the next year so the $30 was still my best deal. When I go down with the intention of hitting a few of those parks, I will definitely get the pass, totally worth it.
