Located in the county of Derbyshire, and around 25 miles northeast of Birmingham, is the town of Swadlincote.
The name 'Swadlincote' is derived from Old English 'Swartlings cottas', where Swartling was the name of an Anglo-Saxon settler and 'cottas' means cottages.
According to records, there have been coal and mineral deposits in the area from as early as 1294. However, for many centuries, it remained a small hamlet. This began to change from the late 18th century with the development of large scale coal and clay extraction in conjunction with the onset of the Industrial Revolution.
Alongside coal, pottery became a major industry in Swadlincote. In 1821 Sharpe's Pottery works was founded by Thomas Sharpe. Among its products were tea pots, pie dishes and ceramic sanitary wares. In 1855 Edmund Sharpe designed, then patented the ‘Wash-Down’ water closet, more commonly known as a toilet.
Throughout the 19th century several collieries and brickworks were opened in and around Swadlincote. This, alongside the pottery industry, helped to transform it from a settlement of just over 200 people in 1801 to an industrial town of over 10,000 within around a century.
In 1851 a railway station opened in Swadlincote. This formed part of the Midland Railway's Swadlincote Loop. The station was closed to passengers in 1947, and to freight in 1964. Today, public transport to Swadlincote consists primarily of direct bus services from Derby, Burton-on-Trent, Coalville and Ashby-de-la-Zouch, among other nearby settlements.
