Great video & very cool app Shortboxed. Also really appreciated your thoughts on Digital Collectibles, where I have taken a keen liking to the VeVe & DCNFT Comic apps. My belief is the access these offer are only benefitting the entire comic & collectibles space, though we're still pretty early! Thanks for the content gents...

In regards to the conversation about scanned images needed, it would seem that Heritage has a large database of their past sales. There have been several occasions when I was on GPA looking at sales trends over the last 10-15 years and it linked to Heritage's high res pictures. The oldest sale with a scan that I've seen was from 2008.

So at the Shortboxed convention, were the comics all sold on the app?

I am really loving what Short Boxed is doing on their app. I have purchased at least one book on there and am an active seller. The latest round of updates have been really good especially the ability to have some sense of a total FMV for all the books you load up on there. I am wondering if they are ever going to attempt to get into the live auction market place similar to Whatnot and eBay Live.

Love the Shortboxed app, and their price guide is a good idea, but it still needs some tweaks. All it does is show the most recent sales, but some books in some grades don't sell too terribly frequently. Case in point: I looked at Detective Comics 230 in their price guide earlier this week. Most recent sale of a 7.0 is shown as $2,040 as of 7/23/2022, and the most recent sale of a 5.5 is $1,059 as of 4/12/2023. But the value of a 6.5 is shown as $203 because the last sale of such was 7/24/2010. Similarly, for the same book, a 4.0 is shown as $2,000 (6/10/2023) while a 5.0 is shown as $131 (5/3/2008). It seems to me that a technology company like this should be able to derive and enact an algorithm that would smooth the values in different grades to give a reasonable expectation of a current value for that 6.5 and 5.0 based on the more recent sales of other adjoining grades rather than simply showing the severely dated information.

also honestly, when it comes to buying and selling comics, for me personally if the new technology for that aspect consists of things like WhatNot, ill stick to my "old" technology like ebay. Works just fine if u ask me. If it aint broke dont fix it

Purchased a Conan the Barbarian #1 from shortboxed, only to be informed that the seller doesn’t have the book. Seller either sold it some other way or decided the price was too low. Just a huge red flag for me and I probably won’t use the service again.

I wouldnt call comics mainstream in the least. They were more mainstream in the 90s. Pop culture based on comics is mainstream but the hobby of collecting is def still a niche thing. If your just out in the world and talk to a random person, the chances that they are into comic books is extremely low. It was also niche in the 90s, but the likelyhood of running into someone else that collected was still much higher than it is today. Today we just have the internet and stuff... and nerd culture in general, in every aspect not just comics, has become more acceptable over the last decade. I was never into anime at all but i do know when i was in HS, if you openly like anime you were 100% an outcast and a nerd and your only friends in the world were other anime nerds. And now its widely seen as cooler. And comics honestly werent as nerdy as things like anime, pokemon, etc. You could still be a cool kid and also have a comic collection as long as your nerdom stopped at that. Comics were the only "nerd" thing i was into as a kid and honestly didnt even realize it was considered a nerd thing until i was grown, and thats only when it was associated with guys like youd see on the big bang theory or something, but for a fact back when i was in school, having comics alone didnt make u an auto nerd like pokemon or anime and things like that did. Back then there werent that many kids truly into comics either, but at the same time alot of kids did have a few layin around at the least and atleast a couple kids atleast dabbled in them a little. Back then collecting comics was more inline with like collecting sports cards as opposed to sweaty nerd stuff lol. Comic collecting popularity has grown in the last few years compared to what it was a few years before that, but i dont think its anywhere near the level now that it was back in the 90s and late 80s

I like the shortboxed app. I've made one purchase and would make more but the selection of available books in the genre (war) I collect is pretty slim. Hopefully that will change as the app is used by more collectors.

What do you think about shipping internationally? I wanted to use the app but found no information regarding shipping to the UK?. There are a lot of buyers here in the UK that would like to have easier access to buying and selling comic books.
@Leshil
@Leshil 11 ай бұрын
Are UK buyers okay with paying the shipping costs from NA that it takes to get them there? It's the one thing that prevents me from selling internationally. No one wants to pay $20-$40 shipping or more for their $4 comic. (Ofc the way to go is buy multiple books)

I think AI can be used as a prescreen for CGC submissions. If the AI finds a flaw that places the comic below the grade set for prescreening, it gets rejected. If it passes, the comic then goes on to be viewed by a human. This would speed up the prescreen process.

Suggestion: AI could be used to hioghtlght flaws on a scan of each page of a book. the scans could be evaluated by the app first, and then checked by a human.

sounds like a good way to say goodbye to ppl getting their coveted 9.8s if u ask me. Sometimes i think things should be left up to humans. Cant understand why so many ppl are so eager for A.I. to do away with the use for ppl and more and more jobs

@nunyabizwacks6711 Humans would still win out when it comes to things of an artistic aspect, but when it comes agreeing on something subjective (grades) we are still fallible. An A.I wouldn't be influenced by fatigue, greed, lack of skill, etc. The A.I could (possibly) take the subjectivity out of grading and make it objective, a bit more finite.

I’m giving the app a whirl, definitely has some nice choices in UX. No offense but this sounds like it was recorded eight years ago. Is Mobile first really the differentiator anymore? IPhone has been out for 15 years 😂 Are dealers really gonna be using a smart phone for the first time with this app? Sorry but it sounds pretty dated.
@nunyabizwacks6711
@nunyabizwacks6711 11 ай бұрын
right i mean not sure how mobile can be a key selling point when every selling venue had had a mobile app for years now. Ebay works fine in my opinion, dont see it being possible to do anything thats suddenly gonna shift that massive market over to any of these rinky dink apps. Plus thats something that happens organically, not by trying to deliberately create a market for a specific item on an app you own so you can control and manipulate said market, which is what it feels like so many of these comic "influencer" type dudes are into trying to do. I know i may sound negative or pessimistic, but i dont trust any of these type of ppl, WhatNot, ComicTom, or anyone of that nature. They arent in it to help the long term stability of the hobby as they claim, they are in it to line their pockets. Sure, theres nothing wrong with making money, but u know what i mean probably. Its like most things in the world, a buncha bullshit 😂
