The lyrics indicate two people who know they're not good for each other but every time they see each other they don't care if it's bad. That's why the song has an intense feel.

The song started out being written as an anti-war song, which they (Donnie and his keyboardist) then turned into a love song of sorts. The "ah Leah" part wasn't originally intended as being a girl's name. Does that not better explain why the song has an intense feel?

Donnie Iris born Donald Ierace, pronounced the same way, is my cousin! He had a number one with a group called the Jaggerz in the early 70s called The Rapper, which you should check out. By "many", you mean you right? I kid of course. When rock radio stations first began playing "Magic Man" in 1976, I thought it was a new song by Jefferson Starship with Grace Slick singing. But, alas, the song was by a new group called Heart with Ann Wilson singing. Another song from 1976 that crossed me up was "Breakdown" by Alan Parsons. If you'd never heard the song before and never heard of The Alan Parsons Project before, you'd swear "Breakdown" was by Fleetwood Mac. That's what many kids at my high school thought. And by "many", I mean ME. lolol

Brad is correct. "Ah! Leah!" is about a star-crossed relationship. This song is one of the most underrated songs of the 1980s. It was a Top 40 hit, but not a huge hit, peaking at #29 on the Billboard Hot 100 on February 28, 1981. The classic rock-and-roll sound and the passion in Donnie Iris's vocals are great, but the chanting vocals in the chorus are what reeled me in. Donnie Iris is a native of the Pittsburgh area, being born in Ellwood City, PA and living today in Beaver Falls, PA. During the 1970s, he was a member of The Jaggerz when they hit big with "The Rapper" (#2 in 1970), and then joined Wild Cherry after they hit big with "Play That Funky Music" (#1 in 1976). As a solo musician in the 1980s, he achieved a substantial regional fan base in much of the Northeastern and Midwestern U.S., and developed a bit of a cult fan base in the rest of the U.S. In all, he had seven hits on the Billboard Hot 100 from 1980-1985, including three Top 40 hits. These are his Top 40 hits in chronological order: "Ah! Leah!" (#29 in 1981) "Love Is Like A Rock" (#37 in 1982) "My Girl" (#25 in 1982) Though "Ah! Leah!" was not his biggest hit on the Hot 100, it has become his signature song, and it gets a fair amount of airplay on several "flashback" radio shows, such as the Retro Pop Reunion, as one prominent example.

Love Donnie Irisl. This whole album ("Back on the Streets") is great as was the subsequent album "King Cool." Next up for reaction ought to be the Jaggerz (with Donnie Iris as lead vocalist) "The Rapper." To appreciate the song, it's helpful to know that early1970s slang, Rapping was slang for talking usually informally kind of like "shooting the ----" today. Ah Leah was serious, but Donnie Iris rarely took himself seriously, though he took his music seriously.

such a great song, and even though I was around (but young) when this came out, I only heard it about 10 years ago. I feel cheated, it's such a great song!

If Eugene Levy and David Byrne had a baby, he'd look like Donny Iris. This is one of the hardest rocking songs of all time.

FANTASTIC SONG. One of the best from the best musical decade ever. FYI, it's not a goofy song and it's not about a girl he can't have. It's about a relationship where neither is good for the other but still irresistible to the other.

Whoa. Whoa! How the heck did this come onto your radar? Not a typical pick. Donnie is a Pittsburgh icon, but not what you'd call a superstar anywhere else. I saw him in concert years ago in a bar in the south side of Pittsburgh in the late 90s. He killed it.

The Rapper and Leah were Mega hits. 95% of professional musicians would kill to have two hits like those. Iris was very talented.

Donnie Iris was the hero of many young nerds after this came out. Oh... And this was written about a girl Donnie had been in a band with, but had never pursued. There were some lingering feelings he needed to vent. So you're actually dead on, Lex.

This made me laugh, because I saw him open for Nazareth when this song was climbing up the charts. I think he was wearing the same clothes or the same look anyways. He played his hit early and the crowd was receptive early on, but things degraded quickly for him as he got booed off the stage about four songs in. It was funny, he threw a little fit up there and left. Then the crowd cheered! It was primarily a rough looking biker crowd. I was little nervous because I went solo and was in the tenth grade at the time. Nazareth was greeted like conquering heros and received at least three encores! I'll never forget that night!

This song came in 1980 when I was 16 years old driving around in my spanking new 1980 Red Turbo Trans Am. The song kicks ass and my friends always cranked the volume whenever it came on the radio. I liked the song so much that I married a girl named Leah.
