I was blessed with a modern day Ghanshyam in my life for 37 years until he passed away recently. I understand Soudamini’s feelings of awe and amazement that emotions that are depicted in story books can exist outside of books in real life. What can I say about the author who wrote such an amazing story and so convincingly. Such foresight and understanding of human nature and Vaishnav dharma. My respects go to all such persons who have such divinity ingrained in them.

It feels like... yeh movie khtm hi na ho bss chlti rhe.. So pure!!! Kitne ache se explain kiya h yaha pyar krna aur nibhane ka fark.... truly mesmerizing!

This story is also different than the actual story written by Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay. There is more depth and facts than shown in this movie.Even the ending is not like that.A lot of things happened in the story ,and a lot of things is imaginary in this movie.Soudamini eloped with Naren to Kolkata at midnight, with the help of Mukta, and he kept her for more than a week.There she realised what she had done.She requested Naren to send her back,but Naren was scared of being arrested for what he had done.So he did not even come to face her for a few days.She stopped eating.She lost all her hope.But Mukta later told her that her husband did not tell about it to his family so they knew she just went to her mother's place as she was angry with Ghanshyam.Ghanshyam had asked for her jewellery to arrange money to rebuild the house of Soudamini's mother, which was burnt, but Mini got him wrong.Mukta was amazed by the purity of the soul of Mini's husband and shevwanted to do penance for her act.She told her that her husband is so good that he rebuilt her mother's house and even knew about Mini's whereabouts after she elpoped.But he still is keeping her honour secure.She told her how he is tortured by his mother. Eventually, with the help of Mukta,he comes to her and accepts her, knowing she was always his and his only. Thus he forgave her and her secret remained a secret for ever.

What a delightful Movie!! I saw this film when I was in India - but I just loved Shabana in it, & Girish Karnard's personality. I watched it a couple of times after that. It's one of the few films I like to watch again, and again after every few years. With the passage of time, the clothes and hair-styles make me giggle - but the good social messages of integrity, morality & decency are timeless!? LOVE the old-fashioned values in this film, and also how she doesn't hesitate to stand up for herself, when necessary. And last but not least the infamous "Kaa karooo Sajaneeee, Aayenaa Baalum" song, simg by the sister, which is comparable to the "Cobra dance" of the middle sister in "Bride & Prejudice" (Another really good film). I wanted to simply add this to my playlist, but then decided to give it yet another "dhekho" - EVERY time I watch this film it fills me with a new appreciation for the times when ethics, morality, honesty & decency were a norm, not a rarity & brings back good memories of India, too. Way back then the Indian Film Industry was second to none, original & outstanding. Today Bollywood (as the copy-cat name suggests) is a Hollywood Wanna-be - Compromising it's unique identity, & originality - What a shame!! Namaste🙏 From USA.

A simple man can be so charming in dhoti kurta just because of his calm and composit nature...his principles and values.... ghanshyam is a total green flag....

As a Bengali, I can proudly say I read the actual novel "Swami" by Sharatchandra Chattopadhyay (who also wrote Devdas) .... they made a slight change in the movie to keep it simple.... the essence is the same...... but still the movie can never compete with the literary prowess of the Writer❤.

After so long i watched a movie which gave me absolute peace of mind..😊 i have no words how to express . Thanks for such a nice movie..

Sarat Chandraji wrote very simple stories with lot of depth in them. If someone has to direct movies based on his stories, then the movie should be made like this unlike Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s movie Devdas. Devdas was written based on ordinary peoples lives.

Women needed only two things, choice able life partner,and reasonable honour,, very nice story,,

Though I don’t agree with the last statement about husband’s house being the only place for a married woman but I loved the simplicity and freshness of the film.

बंगाली कथानक पर बहुत ही लाजवाब कहानी। बिलकुल वास्तविक जीवन को इंगित करती है। गिरीश कर्नाड शबाना आज़मी ने अपने किरदार को जीवंत कर दिया बहुत उम्दा कलाकार हैं। पति पत्नी का पवित्र बंधन है। कहानी का अंत सुखद रहा है।

सादगी में सुंदरता.... गिरीश जी मंद मुस्कुराते हैं और मीठा बोलते हैं। शबाना जी समझदार है, लेकिन सीधे बात करती है। बात बात पर सिर का पल्लू ठीक करती है, बहुत बढ़िया।

Her husband is nice that's y the end is beautiful.. otherwise the girl always survive after leaving husband's house

Really movie is a master piece. Superb acting by Girish karnadji and Shabana Azmi. Peak of forgiveness and gentleness expressions of Girish karnadji is fabulous.

Swarat Chandra chattopadhyay was great writer in Bengal...Debdas is another story.... This type of cinema always in our memory... Actors made it unique.

1977 my first son was born, this year he will complete 47 years father of 6 children, wow the movie still the best, and very quality excellent. I like Shabana she's very beautiful and Talented Actress , 23.04.24.

What a movie truly deeply a bravo classic

Director portrayed Shabana and her uncle Utpal as board minded . But to the end Utpal gets his niece to marry a guy whose been married already. And an opposing Shabana okays after his death but could not convince mother to marry the guy she loved. This didn't make sense
