You will get nothing by worshiping vishnu because vishnu himself gets everything from mahadev. Such things are there in many many sampradays. And coming to vaishnavas itself, many vaishnavas are also not ready to unite together. For example Ramanandi (for whom Lord Ram is supreme) sampraday dont like iskcon. Iskcon claims themselves to be a gaudiya vaishnav. But dont know wether they are or not truelly. But one thing i understood that your friend's and that particular iskcon guy whom he met. They both are the reasons for division. Your friend should have mentality of letting it go because at last iskcon is spreading bhakti and strict sanatani satvic life. I know iskcon very well, they never disrespect lord shiva. Few toxic people are everywhere. So ignore them. Be united. Otherwise Sanatan will be history. And the new religions would he vaishnavism and shaivism just like sikhism, budhism and jainism seperated from sanatan completely.

And in many aspects we can learn many things from swami dayananda Saraswati ji and srila Prabhupad ji. As a whole I am a devotee of lord Krishna so I follow Geeta first. You may know that shlok in Rig Veda which says "Ano bhadraha kartavo yantu vishwatah" Means let the good things enter your mind from any medium. I am just trying to say that .
