When we start receiving calls from the Police and Highway Patrol, we know it’s that time of year when swan parents are beginning to kick their youngsters out!
There’s nothing quite like a morning callout to rescue a juvenile swan from the M25 hard shoulder…
Simon is still attending rescue calls and intends to do so for as long as possible! If you’d like to help grant his last wish, please, donate what you can, today: bit.ly/SimonsLastWish

Most birds scoop up water and then rely on gravity to get it into them; swans have long necks. Pigeons, by contrast, can siphon up water; I think they roll their tongue into a tube shape and then suck. (I know of one other bird species that rolls their tongues but they do it to vocalize.)

Not this time, but we have more foxes coming very soon...! It's near the time where parents will chase away their offspring ready to mate again. Sadly, this little guy seemed to have been shoved out a little earlier than he would have liked!
@annegriswold2116
@annegriswold2116 Жыл бұрын
It was mentioned it was likely the parents kicked the young swan out of the territory. Depending on the parent swans and the young ones, they leave/get kicked out of the parents territory around the fall or winter. If the parents are more tolerant, some are allowed to stay on the territory for up to a year which is around when the new clutch of eggs is laid.
@annegriswold2116

I'm glad the young swan wasn't injured from mistaking a wet road for water from the air. And it looks like where s/he was dropped off is a good place to continue growing up and maybe meeting a mate to pair up with next spring.

I thought it was a great big river... Anyway, these humans here saved me. They brought me here instead, and this place is fab.'

Swans really are fascinating. Used to take my dogs down to a pond nearby some nights and take some seeds to feed the ducks and swans there. We know you aren't meant to but it's something we only did on rare occasions. Both the birds and the dogs were curious and content with each other to the point where they'd see the dogs coming ahead of us and swim over to meet them expecting some food. The swans didn't fight the ducks and the ducks always moved away after they'd had their fill, and then came nightfall the pair of birds split up to sleep at different ends of the pond. It's really amazing seeing these big birds normally seen as beautiful yet aggressive being so tame and patient, and being completely docile around two dogs, lots of ducks, other swans and people even when food was involved.
