Swapping a Stock Intake for a new Edelbrock intake on a 454

I am swapping out my stock 454 intake manifold on my 1971 Chevy truck for a new air gap Edelbrock intake manifold. I previously installed an Atomic MSD efi system on my truck and am dealing with starting problems when it gets hot. This new intake should eliminate the heating problem because of the absence of the exhaust cross over. The change over turn out to be a smooth process with great results.

It's funny how those big blocks run better with the stock cast iron manifold.

Stock seems to always be better but things got so hot it was causing issues. With this manifold, The EFI stays nice and cool. Thanks. Stevo

That is a smart upgrade Steve. I am surprised the throttle body worked that well with the original intake. That job would hard on the knees. I am so happy you could eat off that engine.

Nice truck, I'm in New Zealand and have had a few 80's square body Chevys in the past but right now I've got a 95 C1500 5.7TBI ex cab which I just did the intake gaskets on. (what a pain in the ass that was) But also have a 66 Bel Air 2 door post with a 454 with 5 speed TKO 600 manual and what a scary beast she is, a real sleeper with hub caps etc. I'm about to do the intake gaskets on her too which will be so easy compared to the 350TBI. My 454 is honestly the least complicated and most reliable car, cant beat it. Thanks for the video.

@@stevoj8959 Man the fuel here in New Zealand is at the highest it's ever been, what makes it worse is that our evil government takes about 52% profit from every dollar we spend on gas. The Bel Air is on my channel if you want to see the old girl. Cheers mate for the great videos you do

Did your instructions say not to tighten the top holes (#5, 10, 11, and 16) with a torque wrench? I also noticed you haven't drilled relief holes on your thermostat, but you do have the bypass hose installed, I believe. Is that the stock item, or aftermarket? How much re-learning did your fuel injection have to do?

@stevoj8959

It all depends on the year of the engine. You should have the oval ports. My engine was out of a 75 and it took a 7561 Edelbrock intake. Stevo

What is the part number on the intake? Have a small block 350 with a fitech efi that keeps burning up circuit board that controls injectors every 2 months. Want to use the part number and see if jegs can match it to what I need. May be the same issue getting too hot front the exhaust flow.

The part number is EDL - 7561. This is for a 454 but they should be able to figure out the right one for you. Good luck and I hope this helps you cure the problem. Stevo J

Just curious why you didn't use a phenolic carb spacer. The laminate transfers approximately ten times less heat to the carburetor base resulting in cooler denser fuel/air mixtures. ?
