Refused his sister who begged police to let her get close to get his daughter. They said the sister's life was at risk and he'd shoot her. @Hathur You are misunderstanding the phrase "human shield" with its literal origins. Google the phrase and learn. The phrase can be used to indicate any physical hostage (even if they dont know they are a hostage) if it prevents immediate direct assault by law enforcement.

"Human shield" is the most dire form of hostage as it means police likely cannot shoot without a marksman present as the suspect is holding a person between them and police. A hostage on the other hand is just someone being prevented from leaving safely or under threat of violence if they try to leave, but are not actively held between the police and suspect.

You didn't hear about it because nothing about this scenario is unique to the USA. The father could have been armed with a knife the entire time and it would have not changed anything. Most people in most countries have access to knives and most police in most countries have access to sniper teams.

What about all the people who get "swatted" from fake calls? Other options include thermal cameras, more snipers/spotters, a robot with shotgun, but doubt you would support funding any of that. it is a no-win scenario and one that will likely continue, especially when the family (that typically did a poor job of parenting), get awarded millions for police incompetence.

In this case they outnumbered the offender 4 to 1. The camper was so small there is no place to hide so they didn't need to clear rooms. Contrast this situation with the shooting at the Christian school in Tennessee 3/27/23. There the cops went right in, not knowing for sure how many shooters there were and with numerous rooms and places to hide to be cleared. They didn't stop to take shields, and most of them didn't even have helmets I think. No SWAT team. In about a minute or less they had neutralized the shooter and saved lives. That is courage, dedication and training! It is what the public expects from their law enforcement. Any cop who isn't ready to do that should be off the force! As for "swatting", I think there should be a significant penalty, like jail time! Any time you call 911 you have to give them your name and sometimes your address too. With this call, I think the police could easily defend their actions. Yes, I DO support more/better equipment, robots, snipers/spotters etc! I am not one of the "Defund the police" crowd! Nor do I expect the police to be perfect. But I do get upset when I don't see a willingness to go in harm's way to save lives! "To Protect and Serve" means exactly doing that at times!
