German here. If you’re confused by them calling certain colors “transparent” when they aren’t really, that’s because the translation is occasionally a bit wonky. “Lasur” means glaze in German, but they tend to translate it as transparent. Similarly the olive green is green olive (grünoliv).

Wonderful video, thank you so, so much! Now I must buy some schmincke, goddamnit. I just need to make two remarks. The short one: there are many combos for convenience mixes like Hooker's, Payne's, neutral tint, sepia etc. In the case of the latter three, the usage of black is actually traditional, with the primary differentiator being them being the colour towards which the mix leans. Of course, another variant is the method of neutralisation (violet+yellow, blue+orange etc), which is traditional too (thus, I find it very strange when people call it Jane's grey when it lacks black, since the combo of sienna/umber + blue has been a version of the Paynes’ way before Jane called it her combo). But even then, neutral tint remains the purple leaning neutral and is not totally neutral. Just like how Payne's grey is not totally grey but leans to blue and sepia leans to warm tones. Now, for the second comment... It's art history time! So, burnt sienna, a ferric oxide pigment, is probably the most ancient pigment, used by ancient civilisations but also by prehistoric men on cave walls. The pigment was called Sienna because of the Italian city of Sienna which offered a stable source for it, and was one of the popular pigments of the Italian master painters we all know and ADORE. Now, somewhat 30+ years ago, the mines in Italy were closed, for environmental reasons and along with them the industry lost its primary source for this colour. And this is when something very strange happened. You see, in Europe, companies started using a synthetic - probably indistinguishable - alternative to the original pigment. The code of the original pigment (which was the only sienna till the 70-80s) was PR102 and the synthetic, nigh-identitical substitute was PR101. USA brands, on the other hand, decided to use something completely different, you guessed it, PBr7; a pigment traditionally used to produce the colour identified as (burnt) umber. So, technically, you should be mad at the American brands for mislabeling their product, because PBr7 colours labelled as Sienna should in fact, be labelled as (burnt) Umber Sienna-ish, at best. After all, there was no PBr7 in the mines of the city of Sienna. I believe that handprint (a pseudo-scientific but rather prejudiced and flawed - in the technical aspect of the methods followed- source) also makes the same mistake. You can look further for umber and sienna in the pages of Wikipedia and especially in the printed material provided in the footnotes.

This was really interesting -- in this 2 hours, I probably learned more about watercolor paints and mixtures than from any class or book. It's so nice to hear from someone who has actually done the research and is not just basing their info on personal preference. Thank you for taking the time to do these beautiful paints justice.

I can’t speak to portraits, but I put a pan of Green Earth in a set and used it. Up faster than I’ve ever used any before. On it’s own it is pretty if a bit pale, but it totally improves ANY color you mix it with. I plan to add it to my main palette just for mixing.

I actually love hearing your narration. A big part of these swatch videos is seeing what an artist has to say when they look at these paints. It provides me with good information.

Please keep doing these 'Swatch with Me' vids the way you have been doing them. No music please. This is actually informative and helpful. Music is not. If I want music, I can find my own. I know this is more work but it's truly appreciated.

i don't know if i'll make it to the end before i go to sleep so i gotta say two things before i forget!! 1. i like that there's no background music in these videos, it's like bob ross, just chillin with the paints :) i personally like hearing you "drone on"! 2. your videos are the reason i even know about pigment numbers and it's definitely super helpful!!! for example i could justify buying a second watercolor set because most of the pigments were different, haha.

As I follow along, Denise, I feel like I'm a judge at a dog show. I give each one points, and make notes about every color, and then slip it into my bag so that whenever I am next in an art store, I have my "shopping list" ;)

This is keeping me alive while I’m sick. Edit: I really enjoy the fact that you DON’T have music in the background. Like having music makes my brain expect more of a video and so I get bored more easily. Without the music, it’s just hanging out, listening to you chatter on about pigments, which I love. That’s just my two cents though. You should do whatever you want!

I love the unique, smooth vibe Schminke watercolors give off. I can't explain it, but theres's something so unique and pure about them. The fun of watching this particular dot card video was in how unexpected each color was :)

I always use a very light green underpainting as the first layer in my watercolor portraits. It's a technique that's commonly called "verdaccio" and originally comes from fresco painting. It does tone the flesh tones down but it also gives the skin so much more dimension, luminosity, and an overall far more realistic look. I currently still mix the green myself but I'm planning on buying some version of Green Earth for convenience because I do paint quite a lot of portraits.

There never enough of such quality swatching videos on KZfaq that are both detailed and consistent and feature huge amounts of swatchcards under the same lighting condition and camera. I'm struggling to get my hands on dotcards for reasonable price or samples of colors for the same and this is awesome help, really! Regarding the toning down flesh tones with green earth, I tone EVERYTHING down with green earth :D (though I'm not using the Schmincke one). It works like a charm.

I have that Schmincke Vermilion and you are right. Its not totally opaque. Bruce at handprint said that he tested this pigment among all his brands including Schmincke and they are all consistent in transparency and hue. Daniel Smith didn't list this pigment was opaque. It seems Schmincke is the only brand that did. Schmincke Violet, (the dioxazine pigment) used to be called Mauve in this brand. They changed the names of several pigments. Their PO71 used to be called Translucent Orange and now its Transparent Orange. Their PY101 "Aureolin Hue" used to be called "Aureolin Modern." So many name changes for the exact same pigments and I thought it was silly to change the names of pigments that so many artists are already used to reaching for. I recently ordered the Ruby Red Deep and found that I already bought the Ruby Red Deep. Have you ever accidentally bought the same pigment twice? I would trade it for something else if I could. I should start a watercolor paint trade club! I hate my Schmincke Sap Green!

I actually send these to my non-artist friends to watch who are intrigued by my recent foray into watercolor. Even they enjoy watching these videos and find them very relaxing to watch and they don't even do art or watercolor!

I personally do not mind the length of the videos, please don't be self aware :). I am a huge fan of Mandy Van Goeije (her spontaneity:)) and find my preference is similar to hers too. So its usually a good indicator for whether I will like a colour or not. I find your channel very informative. I am eagerly awaiting for the Senneliers, I find it extremely satisfying in terms of any brand I have used so far.

I love the Bril Opera, Colbalt green turquoise, Potters pink, Rutile yellow. I also found some new ones I’d love to try.

The is informative video I have found so far! I am in the process of upgrading my W&N palette that I have been using for some years since university. I have the Schmincke catalogue at hand while I am watching, and thanks to you, I think I have managed to narrow down the colours I am going for. Great to know more about the pigments used too!

I am quite doubtful I will be buying any Schmincke watercolor paints. I have bought some of their Soft Pastels and I am very desirous of them! I am branching out to soft pastels and have a few different brands but the Schmincke are so buttery and so wonderful to use! Yes, they are just as pricey as the watercolors are, no surprise there huh? The entire line is 400 colors and yes you do want them ALL! I do enjoy listening to your insight about the colors it is why I watch! I hope your doing well and taking care of yourself.

I knew you'd hate that Sap Green! :P In fairness, some of Schmincke's greens are pretty ghastly. Some other brands - Winsor & Newton for instance - also has a very unnatural looking Sap Green. Schmincke's Permanent Olive Green looks nothing like an olive I have ever seen. If someone served me a plate of Schmincke coloured olives, I would be very suspicious and would not eat them; it looks slightly radioactive. I think Schmincke is a wonderful brand and, as you know, is probably the most affordable artist quality paint in Europe. I am not a big fan of some of their earth tones, however, such as their raw sienna, odd-looking raw umber and burnt sienna with black. That said, their sepia brown, burnt umber and maroon brown (quinacridone burnt scarlet) are lovely. I use a lot of earth tones from Daniel Smith, which is especially good because earth tones are usually the cheapest series of paint. I think designing a palette is mostly about picking and choosing your favourite shades from your favourite brands. Thanks for these videos, Denise. You are an incredible resource for watercolour artists. These videos are also incredibly relaxing, if that doesn't sound too odd...

The Payne’s Grey blue is my all time favourite colour ever, loved seeing all the colours swatched, my new colour obsession is Perylene Green will have to see if I can track down some of the Schmincke brand. I love these paints. Thank you

I bought a 48-pan set on sale from Jackson's a few years ago, because everything I read about Schmincke made it sound like they were the top, top brand, but I was disappointed. The tinting strength was relatively poor, and a lot of the colors were repetitive. So many of the blues looked very similar, for example. I should have bought the 36-pan set because the 48 set has a lot of blacks, whites, and the gold and silver that are also weak. The pan of ox gall was pointless. But there are Schmincke colors I find essential, such as transparent orange. I recommend buying the dot card and picking up individual colors. A lot of people love this brand, but it mostly isn't for me.

Please God, do NOT put music on in the background!!!! Nothing is worse and that's why I watch your videos; you're very informative and there's no dumb music. :)

I adore your swatching and brand reviews! Your knowledge baffles my mind, ability to recall from another brand the base pigments. As for music, I prefer to not hear background music. Hi Denise, I still have some of these pigments from a few years ago before they changed the names. For instance the Transparent Orange and Transparent Brown used to be called Translucent Orange and Translucent Brown. In fact, Dick Blick still lists those with the old names. Odd that they would change the names. It causes confusion unless one is keen about the pigment numbers.

Jaune Brillant (tief/dark/foncé): French for Bright Yellow (Dark!) :^> I'm afraid you're reading 'jaune' as the Spanish 'juan'. Jaune Brillant is pronounced, roughly: Zhown (or Zhone), where 'Zh' is like the J in 'Je suis'; and Bree-ah~, where '~' is an unterminated nasal vowel version of 'n'. The final 't' in Brillant is silent. (Please forgive me, I can't help myself.)

Here we are in the future. Magic. I've been studying Schminke while at the same time trying to ignore that beautiful newish Italian watercolor company whose only redeeming virtue is that she is always sold out.....anyway....Schminke is about the same price. I will use your information and my own Schminke dot card to make teeny forays into investments into this brand. thanks!

My vote is no music. I really enjoyed this! I have a lot of Daniel Smith but no Schminke as of yet. Do you have a preference between the two? Also, I am curious as to the reasoning of only wanting to use vegetarian paints? I know our ancestors used every part of the animal and I would think that would be a good thing to do in making paints?? Can you enlighten me? Thank you and thanks for this video!

Thanks for taking the time to do and edit this Denise; I know it was a big time investment! I don't have any Schmincke yet as it is so costly for us in the states, but I did love some of those transparent cool reds, the convenience greens and earth tones! May go back through and make a list of the handful I liked and collect them slowly.

I know what you mean about Schmincke Vermilion. Daniel Smith lists this pigment as semi transparent. I checked Bruce's take on this pigment on Handprint dot com and all were consistent in hue and transparency and listed as semi transparent. Thanks for sharing!

I will definitely be looking into that Prussian Green! I just invested in a selected set of Roman Szmal based on Oto's swatching series and I have been really pleased with their range and affordability!

I used tge color green earth and!!!! It's so useful for flesh tones!!! You can just take some pink/orange and mix it with green earth and you get a good skin tone

I noticed that Schmincke has changed a few of their English names. For instance, #366 (PR179) which is now called Perylene Maroon used to be called Deep Red. And 213 now has had "Hue" added to its name. Interesting!

I use green earth a lot. But I use it next to other earth tones for the frisian landscapes

Love your swatching.... I do love Schminckes SAP, it`s so vibrant in real life. Also geranium (not gerManium) is wonderful. No music, just you talking is perfect.

Just FYI PR48:4 is in 7 different browns from Prima Marketing; they all range from like a raw sienna-ish to a sort of Mars brown-ish or a madder brown color and they are all mixes. Also, the Grünoliv is the green olives are when they are not ready to pick yet; so it is olive green, just not the olive green of olives ready to eat (or jar/canned olives) which is what people think off when they hear olive green. Spinel is spin+el as in elephant.

That’s really more paint than I thought. And even with making a swatch, you have a decent bit left in the dot. You don’t have to make as big a swatch as you did for the video. But since these easily reactivate , it’s look like you can paint a couple or more small paintings (5x7 +/-). Really depends on the subject matter.

Hi Denise! I enjoy your channel and you are a great artist! The texture you saw that is not granulating might well be a new thing I learned about and really do not like too much. It's floculation? I am sure that I did'nt spell it right. Thanks for sharing. I am going M Graham, as I said. I have one Shiminke half pan, but they are just too pricey. I enjoy my white nights also, but find that some of the colors lift very easily. Is there a best way to prevent lifting when glazing? I am adding to my Sennelier after setting up my,15 M Graham colors in two weeks, YAY!

I'm so sad I didn't know this was coming when I bought some new Schmincke colours just a few days before this vid.... I bought the Turner's yellow on a whim and it's just soooooo dull ;A; however, the 346 (ruby red deep), Schmincke's Payne's gray and 525 (olive green yellowish) are in my travel palette, and even though the W&N Cotman sap green mixes very similarly i have both of them in there, simply because the Schmincke green is so super opaque (and mixes well). Green Earth (516) is a convenience colour I enjoy for BuJo'ing, but for regular painting its a tad bit dull. Also pretty useless for mixing. It's very sheer which is nice but because of that so easily overpowered.... I was so excited cause I love the tone of it so much but its just transparent and doesn't pack any punch. I'm definitely gonna try it for skin tones because that might be its saving grace :'D I also have 649 (Engl. Venetian Red) in the travel palette, because I watched your colour spotlight on burnt sienna, was unhappy with the cotman version and just on a whim decided on the venetian red instead of the burnt sienna version of Schmincke and it's done very very well so far. I love it with phthalo green, it's such an interesting green. - I still don't have a proper burnt sienna, but that definitely will change. The Payne's Gray I bought based on a suggestion from a BuJo youtuber and it's doing well to neutralize. I like it for urban sketching and filling in shadows that I've already (cross)hatched heavily, just to give it a finished look without a pure slab of black being on the paper. This made me super excited to pick up some new colours to try out (and give Green Earth a second chance - sorry bud you're just nothing like the Faber-Castell PITT Artist Pen). So yeah. I love listening to you without music! It's very relaxing to me and keeps me occupied when I do my BuJo set-up (as this month) or swatches. No music needed imho, just lovely the way it is. Thank you for this video, and if you ever want to try any Schmincke colours some more I could easily chuck some over the great pond.

OMG. I bought the dot card to help decide which colors to buy. I swatched them on watercolor paper. I love Schmincke and the dot card really helped me to set up a nice palette.
