This video demonstrates a method of casting on for swatches that can be useful when you want to swatch. It allows you to evaluate the fabric on its own without interference of borders or cast on/bind off edges that could cause the edges to flare or prevent the fabric from fully stretching.
This technique is one type of provisional cast on (PCO). Other PCO methods that place the stitches on waste yarn would work just as well.

You & Susanne Bryant never fail to teach me great and useful techniques. I’m a process knitter & I appreciate everything that you share. It’s going to make me a better knitter, this provisional co will come in handy for future knitting 🧶

Excellent! Thanks for putting in the time for this! I have always been disappointed with cast on and cast off edges of my swatches. Not any more🥰

Great tutorial! I did a cast on very similar to this one for a mobius cowl a while back. It was the same except that no waste yarn was used. It was a fun cast on. This is another great one to add to my repertoire. Thanks for sharing!

Love This! I was doing a crochet cast on with a waste yarn and I was thinking that I wish you could just knit on the waste yarn and not have to do an extra step.... and here it is!!! I tried to figure out how you could do it but just couldn't get it. So glad you showed us this. Thank You!!

This looks a lot like the invisible cast on I use for ribbing (the Italian/tubular cast on?). If it is, I really do like using this cast on, but never tried it for a swatch-thanks!!

It might be the same...or it might be a relative. There is an alternating cast on that is similar but there is a different maneuver creating loops in place of the YO. (I did a video on this a couple months ago.) The alternative CO can be used on its own, or can be worked into a tubular CO. Both are sometimes referred to as the Italian CO, particularly when using a technique involving a long straight needle, and both hands to manipulate the two yarns.

Thank you again with your help on swatching. I am quite curious about the stich in the middle of your cable swatch, the horizontal lines between the cables, could you divulge your secret ? If you are still looking for new subjects for a technique Tuesday, I would love to learn more on gauge in various kinds of yarn.

Those 6 sts are worked in pattern (knits are knit, purls are purled), then they are slipped onto a cable needle and the working yarn is wrapped around the cluster 4x, then returned to the right hand needle. It's a cable pattern from one of my Harmony Guides. I had to chart the pattern, because it was written out. I can post the chart to the Rav thread on this video, if you'd like.

Thank you , actually need this right now , I am not sure if virgin wool just has more stretch than super wash or what. My normal formula is just not working :-/

Thanks for the info. Could this be used when doing a double brim for a hat?

Sure. It's a typic of provisional CO. You can even do the CO around the cable of a spare circular needle, instead of using waste yarn. Then the sts are already on the needle for when you work the join.

Would it be ok to use a provisional cast on a scarf or shawl and come back and crochet a border ?

I'm not much of a crocheter, so I don't know if it's a good idea or not to crochet into live knitted sts. I would suggest trying it on a swatch to see if you get the results you want.

Hi Rox, thank you for this video. I heard the cast on instructions, but I didn't hear how to bind off without a formal bind off. Where did I miss the instructions?

@@heidicook2395 I see there are other answers here that explain what to do (slip the live stitches onto waste yarn.) So you knit, though you are blind? What a challenge.
