As someone who knits sweaters, I appreciate that you mentioned the heirloom aspect. It's common for people to carefully clean and pass down handmade blankets, for example, but a sweater made with very fine wool can take just as long to make and deserves to be treated as special

I found a dark blue cashmere sweater for less than $5 at a thrift store, it was hidden between a bunch of hideous polyester blazers and as soon as i saw what it was i snatched it up and didn't let go of it until i finished looking around. always look at every section when you're thrifting, you can never know what you find. i also ordered a cashmere comb, curious to see how it works.

Audrey, I absolutely love watching your videos. I'm 53-years-young, and I've been building a quality, timeless wardrobe for several years now. I love good quality pieces that are made from natural fibers, and I don't buy anything that's not natural fibers. I have a lovely collection of blazers, sweaters & silk scarves that I've either gotten from E-Bay or from a thrift store. There's a thrift store in my area where all the clothes are $1 each regardless of what it is...and I've gotten most of my cashmere sweaters from this place. I'm not a wealthy woman, but I dress like one, and the best part is that I've done it with very little money. Take care, and keep those lovely videos coming. 😊🌸

Hi Audrey, you have made another useful video and probably a lot of viewers will be so happy to watch and learn about how to shop and maintain beautiful sweaters. The Laundress NY has a full range of products for cashmere. I am a BIG fan of cashmere and I would add a couple of things : try to buy expensive brands - St.John, Neiman Marcus, Ralph Lauren- when they go on sale in May or June. There are thousands of kinds of cashmere, the most expensive have the best quality and they tend to pill less. I wash my cashmere in the washing machine, cold gentle cycle, inside a medium size washing bag. Do not mix different colors.

I bought a fisherman knit sweater in Portugal over 40 year ago for $7. I still wear it, and now that they're back in style I'll wear it more often.

As a knitter, it's nice to see such a great episode on sweaters. On washing, it's good to point out that natural wool fibers don't need to be washed between wearing as they don't really absorb odours the way synthetic fibers do. Unless they actually get dirty, I only wash my sweaters once or twice a year. The freezer is a great way to freshen them up if more than an airing out is needed. I've just hit on your channels so I'm still catching up on episodes.

Fall is my favorite season because getting out your sweaters and boots makes me feel wonderful! As a farm girl, I love the fall colors and fashions that were display n the farm and countryside!

Try this. After washing your sweater the way that Audrey described, put the wet sweater in a pillowcase. Close the end of the pillowcase very very securely with a hair tie looped around many times and then put it into the spin cycle of your washing machine. Nothing gets snagged or stretched and the water gets spun out. Then lay your sweater on the clothing rack. This works for wool, cashmere, blends... anything at all. It's fantastic and your sweater will dry incredibly fast without any drippy mess.

Hi Audrey, I agree, sweaters are great! I have several Brora cashmere cardigans and sweaters, mostly bought in their winter sale, and one cardigan that I bought from Johnsons of Scotland in St. Andrews, Scotland - at full price (gulp!). Personally, I have no problem with washing my cashmere in the washing machine on the wool setting - I have a front-loader - in cold water, then drying flat on towels as you describe. I also use The Laundress. However, I do hang all my sweaters, but in a special way that I learned about from the blog Une Femme - I recently described it in a comment to one of my favourite bloggers, Nikki of Midlife Chic. You lay the sweater on a flat surface, fold in half vertically, sleeve to sleeve. Then take a hanger (I use the thin flock-covered ones) lay it on top with the hook between the sleeves and the body (the neckline pointing towards you) then drape the sleeves over one side of the hanger and the body over the other side. Nikki told me that it took her a while to figure it out, but it works very well - no stretching. At the end of the season I wash them and store in sweater bags.

WOW are you reading my mind??? lol... I just accidentally put my Everlane wool sweater in with a load of clothes, dried it, and now it's the perfect size for an American Girl Doll of course... I am thinking about repurchasing it, but I also want to consider some other necklines and styles. I did a broad YT search for wool sweaters came up with nothing, scrolled down to my subscriptions to Audrey Coyne, clicked and literally here you are with perfectly timed and relevant fashion content. I seem to spend half my day de-pilling cardigans but then I do have have a good half dozen I wear most days with my dresses (generally, I'm a dress wearer but with England it's always best to have a cardigan as you can experience, rain, hail, snow and heatstroke all on the same day! :)

I look best in v neck sweaters because I'm a pear shape and have small shoulders. I also read that putting sweaters in a ziploc and into the freezer kills any moths that could be on it. I do this every time I buy a second hand wool sweater. The moths that eat natural fibers are not the kind you can see flying around with the naked eye.

An additional note on sweater care (9:20), a more affordable option to the detergent is to use baby shampoo (it also comes in a lavender scent). Wool and cashmere are hair so shampoos and conditioners (to slightly soften the itchiness of some wools) can be used. Also, use a very small amount (dime - quarter coin size). lukewarm water > detergent > garment (never run water over garment). Also, do not wring the rinse water out but gently squeeze > put on towel > roll towel into sausage > walk on towel (or put into mesh bag (or pillow case) > 1-2 min on spin cycle). As an avid knitter and collector of cashmere sweaters, your guide is spot on.

Audrey, my really good sweaters I can put them in the washer on the hand wash cycle and it works really well. I then shape them carefully and hang to air dry, They come out looking great.

Max Mara is super expensive but I bought a lightweight cashmere sweater from them on a sale..and its the only cashmere sweater I own that still looks as good as new. It was so worth it.

I'm very envious of anyone who can wear a sweater well. I stopped wearing them about fifteen years ago after watching What Not To Wear. Sweaters were adding more bulk to my shorter frame and made me looked heavier than I really was. I haven't missed it since I live in CA. I will use your tips to try to find a slimmer sweater with your tips.

Some women collect shoes or handbags. My weakness are sweaters. I tend to buy the same types of sweaters so I have to control myself to stop buying another grey or beige oversize sweater. I love to shop at thrift shops and I always fall in love with a new sweater. My latest purchase was a knee long cream beige color fluffy cardigan with pockets. So warm and cozy. Loved your video. You inspired me to look for a new turtle neck because a woman has never too many turtle necks. Much love.

I support your last comment about quality sweaters lasting forever. I have a Scottish made sweater that I bought about 25 years ago (or more) from Goodwill. At the time, I could tell it was quite old because the buttons were ruined. After replacing the buttons, that sweater has been in constant rotation. At this point, I will say it is starting to look it's age. Somehow it always manages to fit, despite my changing sizes. It is always the perfect colour (a soft red). It has been the most magical piece of clothing that I have ever owned. No matter what I wear with it, it always elevates what I have on. Looked after, I would say it has lasted at least 35 years and I will never get rid of it, even if I do stop wearing it.

I like your tips and style. Like you, I take pride in taking care of my clothes to make it last. I hand wash them and air dry them. Great video.

It has the best pattern I have seen (doesn't look m/c made) and some just have the cable pattern only on the front! Thanks to your advice I will be buying a couple of crew neck sweaters because at 61 my neck isn't what it used to be and I am inspired by how you wear your scarves. Up here in Toronto, I never actually put any sweaters away "for the season" so, I don't mind spending a bit more because they get a lot of use. P.S.- I just "inherited" one of my Dad's cashmere cardigans since his passing, (from Land's End). I don't mind that it is a bit too big-I think of him…♥

Sweaters that don’t pill are made from the more expensive long fibres. It’s the end of the fibre that creates a ball or pill so the longer the fibres the better. Anything with a fluffy feel is going to pill like crazy. I have had a couple of cashmere sweaters that didn’t pill; one was Geneva brand and the other was Aero both bought secondhand on ebay. Would appreciate any recommendations from others re cashmere brands not prone to pilling.

Sweaters are something that really benefit from proper care. Without it even the most expensive sweater will age quickly.

A warning to folks looking for second-hand wool sweaters (especially cashmere) online: pay attention to length measurements. I’ve been burned several times where people have wash, dried, and shrunk their cashmere...and then sold them on. Because of the seaming, wool sweaters tend to shrink lengthwise more drastically than widthwise, so a disproportionately short length measurement is a clue that the sweater may have been shrunk and/or felted.

I also have a multi layer horizontal sweater dryer that I can hang up in the bathroom. It holds three sweaters.

I really enjoy your videos & suggestions, here is a tip for delicates if you don't have detergent, use a mild hair shampoo, since it's made to clean a natural fiber(hair) plus it will smell divine, my mom taught me that 🤗

Hi! I've cut my sweater with shaving razor, so I looked for information for other options and find an electric device for cutting those little balls - "fabric shaver", and they are cheap, run on battery, does the job just perfectly. Bought one for my mom and one for my sister and they are forever grateful to me 😊

While I know it’s nit for everyone, I’ve begun knitting again and have made myself some fabulous sweaters. I love some of the very simple boatneck sweaters. Living in Texas, I lean more toward very light thinner yarns and love the angora wools.

I love cashmere, and, luckily I work for a company that sells cashmere! Thank goodness for staff discount! I machine wash mine on a wool cycle, then dry flat, de-bobble and iron them. XX

I really enjoy watching your videos and I love your style. I've been collecting sweaters for a long time and have found some beautiful cashmere pieces at the thrift store. Like you I have so many cardigans they are my go to pieces, love your fishermens sweater that's next on my list to find :). I hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday.

Not a big fan of cashmere - it just pills so much, even expensive pieces,, and I can‘t wear wool any more (scratches like hell), so I stick to cotton and also viscose, which has a lovely smooth feeling and is great for the warmer season. And yes, with a little TLC you can have and wear them for many years, no need to constantly exchange them just because fashion demands sizing that looks too small one year and oversized the next one. Unfortunately over the last years many brands have gone back to using lots of synthetics, polyester, polyamide and polyacrylics are everywhere, big thumbs down to the fashion industry.

I have been living in wool trousers (homemade) and woollen jumpers (both machine and hand made) for 40 years, and none of them have been anywhere near a dry cleaner. I hand wash the garments and use the spin dry to get the water out. The centrifugal force just presses the fabric against the drum - no pulling or any kind of agitation. Then wrap the garment it in a clean towel and sit on the parcel for a second or two. Then it is ready to iron or leave somewhere flat in the shade. It is not good for wool to be wet for any longer than is necessary.

Thank you, Audrey. I bought a couple of Kashmir sweaters from Uniglo this winter and so far, they seem to be holding up well. I never hand wash my sweaters, I always bring them to the dry cleaners. Once, in my 20's, I washed a beautiful sweater that I just loved and it shrunk, I was heart broken. Since then I have never washed a sweater again. Maybe when I retire, I will try to wash one and see what happens, after all I have the wooden clothing rack and of course the towels, I will have to Google your bottle of soap, though. What do you think of those electric pill removers? I use something called, Hollywood Sweater Saver. It is a hard brick thing. It works just so so. I wouldn't recommend it.

Also, banana republic, jcrew, ann taylor are all easy-to-find stores that'll have classic cardigans/sweaters year round basically. Any reason u didnt mention them?

Do you ever use a Dry Cleaners service.

Winter is my favorite season, partly b/c I'm partial to winter clothing and feeling cool. I'm certainly a sweater fiend. I don't wear sweaters in spring or summer. Michigan gets to humid.
