SWEDISH DEATH CLEANING, DECLUTTERING SENTIMENTAL ITEMS! This Changes Everything!
Hello everyone and welcome to today's video, I am so happy you're here with me! In today's video we will be using the Swedish Death Cleaning Method to declutter some of my sentimental items. This isn't even a fraction of the sentimental items I have in my home, but I wanted to start small (there's also a couple of sentimental items that I've already gone through in the past but couldn't let go of, not much but a couple of things and I wanted to get those items out of the way, let them go for good!) especially with this method, which is also a method I have never used before. The book I read is called "The Gental Art of Swedish Death Cleaning, by Margareta Magnusson, it is a fantastic book and an easy read, I'll have it linked below. We will be discussing this book while going through sentimental items. This booked had me thinking of my entire decluttering journey, how I view my items and how I declutter, but most importantly it is a selfless and honest method, as you are decluttering your items and thinking "is this something I want to burden my loved ones with when I pass". I really hope you enjoy today's video, thank you so much for being here with me, I appreciate you so much!

My 79 year old hubby was recently diagnosed with Afib and through testing found out he had a PFO that normally closes at birth (always knew he acted like a baby and now I have proof!). Cardiac ablation is a common treatment for WPW. He just had an ablation on Wednesday and did awesome. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your husband’s age is with him for successful treatment.

I am so happy to hear everything went good, im keeping you and your husband in my prayers🙏 and sending lots of love ❤️and lol 😂🤣"always knew he acted like a baby" HA!....this comment is so helpful, it helps me to better understand what it is he has. From what the doctor said, we're pretty sure everything is gonna be just fine, she made it sound as though this is something that is treatable, so I await to see what the cardiologist says and hopefully we can get more answers and a game plan. Thank you for being here with me friend, I am so grateful you are here with me! Hugs 🥰

Thank you so much for this video. My mom was a hoarder or I guess I should say an "electic collector." It took my sister and I one huge dumpster, an estate company with several sales, Many trips to charities and give a ways. It took us a year to get rid of her belongings. We were exhausted. My sister and I are minimalists so this was so stressful to us knowing we were going to have to deal with it one day. Please do NOT do this to your children. There is no Uhaul behind the hearse!. I am so thankful I did the swedish death cleaning years ago. I knew my kids did not want my stuff or great grandmas christmas dishes. Let it go! Call your local Senior living centers and donate your crocheted tablecloths. They have teas and would love to share these memories with the residents. My mom had 30 Dickens villages. They were in tears of joy when we showed up with boxes of these to share with the residents. The main living room was gorgeous at Christmas time. Your activity directors can be your greatest friends to share moms items. Just my thoughts.

You did a really great job. Unfortunately I lost my husband many years ago. So I started decluttering in 2020 after seeing a vid on minimalism I also fell in love with the tiny house movement. After my car accident last year. I got rid of my bulky bed as I couldn’t sleep with the constant neck and back pain. I bought a futon instead which I can roll up and put away during the day giving me extra room in my space. I decided it was time to get rid of all the other bulky furniture so that my daughter doesn’t have to deal with it later. Now I only have my tiny house which is moveable and manageable along with some savings and some gold and that’s it. Stress free for her and for me.

You did the right thing. When I was in my 40s I started having pain in my chest, down my left arm, and felt like a elephant setting on my chest. This was actually my second heart attack. Then my husband and I started planning on maybe me dieing of a heart attack. Then when he was 55, he had a heart attack and died, I lost my better half, my best friend, the love of my life, I'd been with him and married to him 34 years. Talk about having a hard time with life, I did. I just wanted to die and go be with him. I had to learn to do a lot of men things, on my own. Prayer for your family.

Best wishes to your family. My kids are in their 40's. My mom kept a bunch of junk and papers, we tossed them. My in-laws had some furniture we use, and a few things my kids use. I own things I like and use, we give bags of stuff away each week. We visit and talk to family, our memories are precious. Things are just things. Tina, Al's wife

I had a cardiac ablation in 2016 for SVT and everything went smooth and has been great since. The scariest part was they do what they call mapping the heart to find the issue and to do that they need the heart to go into a fast rhythm they give you an injection to induce the rhythm... That part was scary but as soon as the issue is found they completely put you under and repair the issue. The entire ordeal leading up to the surgery, the episodes and doctors and not knowing what's happening is so scary. I'm praying for your husband, for your family and for you. 🙏🙏🙏

I'm so sorry to hear of Ian's condition but that it is treatable, I had a scare years ago with my daughter who had 3 young children and was single we found out she had a brain tumor thankfully not cancerous, it was genetic ,but she had brain surgery it was a horrible time , she's now on disability because it affected her cognitive function and emotions. It is scary when things change that quick with someone's health. I have pictures of ppl that were my Aunts friends or co-workers and I did get rid of them I had no one else that would know them no sense in keeping them I have so many pictures anyway.

Im so sorry Danni, I have had heart issues ever since my second poke, and have been to the ER several times. Prayers to you both, death cleaning has been a real factor in our house ever since. It puts all into perspective.💛🙏

I wanted to reach out on messenger but I'm not approved to. I'm terribly sorry to hear about your husband but very thankful that he is ok and that he now knows what he has been living with his entire life. This is so smart to imagine a home "filled" with only items you love, will use and have a purpose. Not clutter for your children to have to handle after your home. Death positivity is so important. I'm not necessarily talking about right when a person passes but to live functionally instead of living in a pile of over consumerism. So proud of you for starting strong and being there for your family when they needed you the most. But I hope you have had the time you needed to comprehend what happened. Love this video.

What an emotional rollercoaster... I laughed, I cried... but not in that order. Feeling guilt when you didn't really do anything wrong stems from anxiety. I have noticed that people who have anxiety also have a lot of empathy. You feel the painstaking work that went into knitting a sweater or completing a painting and that leads to feeling guilt for wanting to get rid of it. Rather than look at things at face value of simply whether you like the item and want it in your life because it adds value to your life, you get hung up on these extra details that cloud your judgment. I'm glad Zoey weighed in on the painting to help make that decision easier!

Sounds simalar to my SVT. SUPRA VENTRICULAR TACHYCARDIA. My heartbeat would go over 200 bpm for hours at a time. I had no insurance. I finally got a doctor who would have me come into the ER when it happened again and I would get a cardiac ablation from him. The hospital would cover it. Only bad part is a year later I was diagnosed with AFIB after I had a stroke. My svt was so off the charts , I didn’t feel the AFIB. praying for your husband.

You are right that we never know what could happen at any age. I think it really gives peace of mind to try to prepare and talk about the inevitable event even though it is hard. There are even checklists etc on line that help because when we are in the situation we are not thinking clearly. I hope this makes sense.

I had wpw myself. Yes they said I was born with it. I had an ablation. That's what the surgery is. They went through my artery in my groin area like they do when they check for blockage. They give you meds through an iv to speed up your heart so they can see where the problem is. And they abate the area that is causing the problem. It closes off that extra electrical path. You will be sedated so don't be scared. I didn't need medication afterward. I had this done in 2012.

Your intro took me back to the ER in my own situation. I’ll read the book and hopefully it will help me let go. I would hate to leave my daughter this home full of “stuff” that would be a burden to her. Also, I was first widowed at age 25, so it can happen at any age.I still have all his guitars and a few other items all these years later. I’ll be sure to read the book and I hope it will help me too. Thanks so much.

I LOVE this video!!!! THANK YOU SOOOOOO MUCH!!!!!! We are moving, downsizing, and I've BEEN "ruthless" as I 'was' calling it! NO!!! It's NOT ruthless, it ALL makes sense! Yes, I am older than you are, 56, my kids are married and have kids of their own, and I have given them ALL the photos and scrapbooks OR anything of value! My ex who I still live with, we get along great and will continue to, HE told me about Swedish Death Cleaning TODAY!! I never heard of this before! I HAVE BEEN doing this very thing but didn't know it!!!! Wowowow!!!! The points you brought up today about EVERYTHING, especially PHOTOS, OMG!!!! You hit the nail on the head!!! OUT they go! I feel LIGHTER, less on my shoulders, lighter emotionally as well! Even for the sentimental items, they MAY have meant something at the 'time given', but that can and often changes over time, and if it does, OUT it goes! I've gotten rid of the EXACT cookbooks you have in THIS video as well! I was also saving them 'for sentimental reasons'. but you are correct again! It's ALL online!!!! NO NEED to keep them! I am amazed I have been doing this all along for this move and never knew it OR that it had a name! I just decided I did NOT WANT OR DESIRE to be carrying and moving these 'things' with me any longer! WOW!!!! I DO feel like a NEW person having gotten rid of them! One thing I will admit - some of the things I have spent the amount of money on, no I'm farrrrrr from having ANY money, in fact I am disabled due to a rare neurological muscle disease and unable to work, so I have used that LITTLE money I get every month ONLY to be throwing it away....NOW!! I will say moving forward, that will be first and foremost on my mind BEFORE I ever spend another dime, ohhhh yes!!!! Thank you, dearly, for hitting on every important topic as you have! I am so happy to have found you/your videos!!! I subscribed, oh for sure!!!!

I do find decluttering baby items the very hardest. Of course you probably have photos of your child wearing the clothes especially if they were your favourite. I recently found several bins of my son’s baby clothes. I would declutter them but he recently got married and my daughter-in-law wants to keep them for my future grandchildren. This worked out for me thankfully. Regarding other adult clothes, shoes, etc., it really is better to declutter them as soon as you’re done with them. Most likely no one in the future is going to want them. New subscriber here. Also wishing the very best for your hubby.❤️🙏

You still remind me so much of myself. Even going on 6 years in here....i keep myself on a 3 .onth schedule to reassess where the home is in its organzation/accumulations lol are. I have had to pace myself with sentimentals still to this day. Thats why the 3 month cycles have helped so much. Each time Ive been able to let go more and more. Watching everyone else on their journey holds me accountable on mine and Ive been playing at documenting some of mine here too just for the sheer benefit of accountability. Like ive slways said...ITS SO FREEING!!! Everything has a place and purpose and cleaning is so much easier. My home is open to anyone to come and visit at anytime, with no hestitations from me. Danni listening to you tell us about your husband really resonated with me. June 6 of this year my husband went in for a colonoscopy and endoscopy cause he was anemic prior to this and we found blood in his stool (these symptoms had been showing for over a year prior). So afterwards the doctor pulls me aside while my husband is slowly waking up from anesthetic (Our son was in the room with his dad). Tells me the procedure went well but they found a malignant tumor on his ascending colon. I felt like i was hit in the face, our whole relationship flashed before my eyes and all i could do was stare at the doctor. My husband of 13 years, together for 16 years had colon cancer and i didn't know how to tell him, our kids and family. I knew i had to keep it together and like you said it was the hardest thig in my life to have to do. We are only in our 40's (hes 41 and im 43). A month later on July 7th he went in for surgery and when i tell you it was 3 hours it felt like eternity. He came through no issues and they removed a foot and a half of his ascending colon and his appendix. We had a series of medical visits and happy to say he needed no chemo or radiation. He is doing good but he is still very fatigued which we are doing more tests to rule out his heart. You are so right when you say life can change at any moment and like you, my husband is my other half, soulmate and love of my life. I cant see life without him and its so hard when we have kids and were trying to be strong for them and our husbands, but falling apart ourselves. Its a journey that you both will get through together, and your family. Life is precious so take in each day, hour and moment cause we are not promised tomorrow. Sending you love and hugs Danni XoXo

I used to keep every card and gift, now I throw out the cards shortly after I receive them. I have a small 1 bedroom apt. at the moment and I don't want the clutter. If I don't want or like the gift I toss or donate shortly after, too. I was such a sentimental hoarder until about 50 - you move enough times, you realize dragging the stuff with you that stays in bins is ridiculous and expensive. Taking photos of the sentimental has helped so much - and when you look at the photos later, it's easy to delete some of those too! I still have too much sentimental stuff I inherited in my closet, but am slowly purging. That is a good purging you accomplished. Old clothes smell, get holes, yellow - photos are best if they are never going to be worn again. Your hubby will fly through the treatment for the heart issue!

About 10 or so years ago I started this but didn't know it had a name (granted decluttering is in my cells, been doing it since I was 9 (I know I was a very strange and lonely kid). I started with maybe x10 bins, now I have a small square trunk of sentimental, that's it. This is also fortuitous because yesterday I told no2 child, if I go, there's a certain book, (I decluttered those down to 99) that book has all the genealogy that I have, don't throw it away. I am so so so sorry about your emergency but relieved that it wasn't worse. I was on the edge of my seat and crying when you were holding back. 💖😘💖😘💖😘💖😘💖😘💖😘💖😘

My mom had baby clothes that were so old they got crunchy. So it was a shame they weren’t given away sooner to let someone enjoy. I thought those angels were cute and a nice Christmas decoration. So you’re right you don’t enjoy it so someone will. Again so sorry you guys went through a scare I’m praying for your husband and family. Sending hugs. Enjoy the day.

We're waiting for tests and yes it's a scary, unsettling time but the Lord will get you through it. I love you so much. You're very blessed for family and support. My husband and I have no one but each other but we'll get through this! I know we've never met but I've followed you for so long I told my husband I feel like you're a true friend. First thanks be to God Ian didn’t have a heart attack but please keep us up to date on his health. I am so proud of you and how well you did with the sentimental items. They are always the hardest, It took me 27 years to get rid of my wedding dress and shoes. I still have a box that I have cards from my husband and children. It’s a wooden box and I never go over what can fit in the box. If I decide I want to keep something else and it doesn’t fit in the box something from the box has to go. Always remember the memories and treasures are in our heart and mind. I lost my dad in 1992 my mom 1993 and my only sister and BIL was killed in a horrible car accident 1996. I can relate to here today gone tomorrow. I still don’t have a lot of sentimental items from them because they knew before they died I was a minimalist so they knew I wasn’t going to be keeping anyone’s stuff. ☺️ They we’re the extreme opposite of me. OMGoodness the stuff they had in their house’s. I will tell you now I had a Treasure Box that I gave to both of my children when they became adults, not big and they could of care less. I was pissed at first because of all the years of saving everything but then I realized what are they going to do with that stuff. I told them to trash it but they have kept it. They actually love their Baby Book that I did more than the Treasure Box. I was one of those mom’s that completed a baby book 💯 percent for each child. Looking forward to your next video! Hugs from Southwest Florida. 🌴🌴🌴

Sheli my heart dropped into my stomach reading this! I seriously cannot even begin to imagine how painful & difficult that is, I am so very sorry for the loss of your dad, mom, sister and BIL, if I could go through this screen and give you a big hug I would! Sending you so much love right now! The items we have inherited from loved ones who we've lost, the items that remind us of the person, is the hardest items to let go of, but when I was removing some of this stuff, it really was a relief, sometimes objects can be painful. You are 10000% spot on, the memories are in our heart and mind, and we'll never let go of that, we carry that, we carry them with us always! I have to create a memory box for my kids as well, I really need to get on that so I can organize all their childhood stuff instead of it being scattered everywhere. I really appreciated my mom keeping the things she did for me because it showed how much she cared and I honestly love some of the things she kept, e.g. baby book, looking back at the baby book is really cool and photos, even some other misc stuff, its fun to head down memory lane every once in awhile. (but I will admit, there was some stuff I could have cared less about LOL, I think it pissed my mom off too) Time flies and every moment is so precious. You're an AMAZING mom and amazing friend, I love & appreciate ya so much dear! I will definitely keep everyone posted on Ians health journey, you all have showed us so much love and support my heart is filled with gratitude! Thank you! Lots of love🥰🥰

I’m so sorry about Ian’s health scare. I hope everything goes well for him moving forward. Big hugs to you all.❤ I use to take photos of my kids wearing the clothes as babies. Every new outfit got a photo. It helps because we think they’re adorable but I’m sure by the time our kids have kids there will be cuter stuff. 😊 Time, is always the best help in decluttering sentimental. The painting is beautiful and wonderfully executed. Maybe there’s a woman’s club in the area where your great grandmother grew up that might want it. It needs a new frame but the artwork inside still looks good.

So glad that Ian is ok! About cookbooks, I think it’s a different thing if it’s a personal collection like a binder with your familys collected favourites, or ”grandmas christmas cookies” etc. I have one general cookbook ( all from butchering a chicken, to classics and pie crust etc that my mom give me as a kid. So I have bought my kids each a similar one. You know a ”goto” for anything kitchen related. Otherwise I just Keep those that interest me.

I'm so glad Ian is ok Danni! Life can be so scary at times...and when things turn out to be livable or just a scare etc it is indeed a good reminder to keep percpective for when we find ourselves letting the small stuff mess with us...right? We are all stronger than we even realize & these situations let us know that as well ❣It's good to let your emotions out - doesn't mean you're not strong either - that is the healthy thing to do - to let our bodies, minds & spirits process the way they need to. You have a beautiful family Danni! You are lucky to have them & they are absolutely lucky to have YOU!!! Be gentle to yourself & Well My Friend....

Oh, Danni! I wish I was there to give you a big hug! I know what you went thru. I have been through it many times with husbands and boyfriend and family members. When my second husband was ill I knew he wouldn’t be coming back home. I started decluttering then and haven’t quit yet. I had a junk company come and take lots of things to make room for my basement. It helped a lot. Now I have the garage and the rest of the basement to finish off. I am happy to get it out and gone. Please tell Ian I will keep him in my prayers and hope whatever is ahead of him he will come through this. Love you guys! Hugs!🥰👍💜🙏 P.S. the old pictures can be donated to Goodwill or a thrift store. This was a hard thing to do! I understand 100 %. If we think back to old times, they were only able to hold on to things they could carry. Or wanted to be buried with. This is a new issue, and maybe that is why it’s so hard. We are just now getting sensible ways to not have too much stuff! I am so glad Ian did not have an actual heart attack! So scary. My husband has health issues that are serious and it is so hard not to just give in to panic! It’s funny, in an actual emergency, I am calm, logical, almost robotic. I get through it. Then I sit down and am hit with all the emotion that I set aside at the time and I’m a mess!😂 Been out of the loop, just now catching up! ✌️♥️

I have never read the book but one of the tips my grandmother gave me growing up is that if there is something you really want to save/keep and especially if there is a story/memory tied to the item to write that down (the story/history of the item) and keep the note/story with the item, because of that I have been able to keep my "Memory Box" down to one plastic bin. Hope Ian is feeling better! Sending love and prayers for all of you! 💜
