On a serious note, do this while you are in a state of good physical condition, in your early sixties for example. I am 73 and my health has been declining for the last ten years, I am not able to declutter any more but I wish I had done so earlier. As one ages, clutter gets in the way, especially when you have a walker or a wheelchair and other medical equipment and supplies, you soon realize that things are not that important anymore..

I agree! Also, as someone who is young and also disabled (my sister has similar physical issues), inheriting all my grandparents' junk has been completely daunting. They were hoarders too! So much that might have been sold, we had to hire people to fill 3 40-yard dumpsters, just to be able to walk in their house! A word to the wise: the people we leave behind, may not be physically capable of dealing with a load of things either. The more you declutter, the better!

I spent a few days helping my mom declutter multiple closets and dressers last summer. We had some laughs thinking of how she saved certain tops for 20 years thinking she would lose weight and fit into them again, and I said- why would you punish yourself by wearing this old crap and not treat yourself to new stuff as a reward? She was left with a neatly organized closet of only items that made her happy. And she jokingly said "keep these 2 dresses, maybe I can wear them to my funeral" at one point during our cleaning and that was actually helpful information to know. She passed away unexpectedly just a few months later.

I am 68 years old and identify with your mom. She is a hoot! What cracks me up, however, is that she’s always trying to get you to take things, Shannon. Two of my three daughters are minimalists and have taught me so many life-changing lessons. It is critical to revisit decluttered spaces and I am so proud of your mom for downsizing like she’s been doing. It’s difficult at first but I think she’s developing some pretty strong decluttering muscles.

Everyone needs to do this for themselves and their loved ones. Just because someone is older, doesn't always mean that they will die before their kids.My younger sister died at only 50, her son at only 21 and a few weeks ago, I survived a heart attack at age 61. I always assumed my 79 year old Mom would die before me, leaving me with a large amount of things to go through, but that is not always the way it happens(I was lucky this time). My Mom has a huge amount of clothing that she never wears. She has decluttered a few things over the years when I tried to turn her onto minimalism, but not as much as I would have liked. I always worried that when she dies, I would be overwhelmed, like I was with my younger sisters things when she died,(18 green giant trash bags of clothes alone-nevermind the rest of her stuff when she passed), but recently with my heart attack, I realized that someone may have to deal with my stuff, sooner than later and it has made me realize I have let the stuff creep back in over the years and am no longer the minimalist I used to be.Thanks for this awesome video ladies.Doing this is a huge gift to ourselves and our loved ones.

Oh my goodness! I’ve been decluttering and minimizing for abt 10 years now. I’ve had to learn to “let go” little by little and to learn not to buy things & add them back in. For me it has been a learning curve. Just when I think I couldn’t possibly find any more things to get rid of, I revisit each area & find that I can still actually gather yet another box full of things to de clutter. I can’t explain it or understand it, but It happens. I’m 70 and still learning. It is so freeing to have less things. I used to spend so much time on organizing, reorganizing etc, but now I do it very little.

I did this while prepping to move 5 years ago, and so glad I did it. Last year I did it again. My oldest brother is in the process of doing this now. It is such a gift to give your family, so they don't have so much to deal with when you pass. Sounds morbid, and the name of it is pretty strong, but its so freeing, for everyone! And you can donate so much to others. Everyone needs to do it. 🥰🌷❄☃💗✝

Me and mom are in the process of doing this. I don't think it's morbid but got an great grandmother who is Swedish so I guess I get it from her 😅. We had a mess to deal with my aunt who was a hoarder. We ended up getting help after 6 months of doing what we could, at 3 to 5 times a week. She had over 200 purses and over 200 pairs of shoes alone. Not including the clothes. And other stuff she had a ton of multiples. I just grabbed a few pieces of jewelry and her sectery desk cause I needed something to write on and do my bills and to organize it all.

I am 57 and just moved into Momma & Daddy's house (44years) and blending my own home with theirs. So much to do.... so much to give away, sell, toss.... Momma was my best friend. Watching the two of you made me smile and cry. We were so much like you two. I Lost her this Mother's Day (And same day as my birthday.) 💔Grief has made it harder to go through things. joshua Becker, the author of The Minimalist House says the biggest declutter you can do is when you have empty drawers so you can get rid of a piece of furniture. Even if it is a set, let the armoire go or something along that line. That really makes rooms bigger and less cluttered.

I've always done it on my own and have helped others, but always wish I had someone to help me. I have WAY less in my home than the "after" in your mom's, but I'd still like to do more. Really fun to watch you and your mom decluttering. Over time, she has learned to let go of more and more stuff. Very neat to see her go through stages. And, watching the two of you working together is pure joy!

This was wonderful. What I loved the most was seeing the progression it usually takes for someone to declutter years of stuff, like layers of an onion. I went through the same thing and am now in a very good place managing the things I decided to keep. I actually felt anxiety as I watched because I was remembering how I felt when I had so much stuff! I’m so proud of your mom, we are about the same age and I relate to her a lot. Thanks for all your helpful content Shannon! Hugs, Barb

You don't have to give the shoes up, they are something for the memory box or even display ❤❤! But there are a lot of things we keep that are not really that near and dear to us - or that we have too many of etc. It can be so freeing to let these go

I'm an Ebay seller too and it's so hard to just donate all my stuff when I can potentially sell things. I applaud your mom for donating so many things! There's just not enough time in the day to list it all.

I agree-we sell things to earn money back for our family. I hear people all the time complaining about not having any money but then they march down to the thrift store and give them everything they have they could have that they could have made money on.

I've been clearing out my mom's house for nearly 2 years. 9 closets, packed so tight that I had to pull items off the hangers to get them out. 17 trips to a women's shelter with my car & trunk PACKED. I kept a small closet of sweat suits & jackets. I also cleaned out my uncle's house. My house is packed with what I can sell & keep. And 2 full Uboxes & ordering 1 more for My house. I so need This content!

I normally do not like videos on decluttering. I watch them because i do need to declutter but the videos just don’t motivate me. I have to say though, I thoroughly enjoyed you and your mom tackling her items. I liked your approach and that you didn’t pressure her, just gently encouraged. Great video. Makes me want to tackle my house.

Yes! I take everything my grandma gives me, then freely donate! I know it helps her and I know she realizes that I only end up keeping what is useful for our family. Just be sure to make decisions and deliver the donations quickly-don’t let it creep in unintentionally!

You two are so fun!! It’s 10 pm, but you’ve inspired me to continue going through closets to get rid of expensive clothes I never wore and never will. Talk about the guilt!! But I’m donating them and imagining that someone somewhere will be thrilled to have them. Plus I’ve finally accepted the fact that I was careless with my spending but hanging on to that stuff is NOT going to bring that money back. Aaaahhhhh…I feel lighter already. Thanks for the very encouraging and entertaining video. ❤

Your mom is adorableeeeeeee!!! Not many people have her discipline and determination to let go of so many things. I don’t mean to be judgmental, but from experience I have gotten the feeling that the older people get, the more they tend to clutter and have a hard, very hard time to let go of their possessions, whatever they might be. And she is so much fun, everytime she says, I don’t know, do you want it?😂

your mom is such a hoot! I am 66 now, and I am watching these videos to get myself motivated to declutter. I have been saying for years I must let things go, because I don't want to leave this mess to my kids. I love that you and your mom are doing this together. It makes it so less stressful, and "way easier" as you have been saying and she has been saying all through this entire video, to do this as a team. Blessings on you both!

and at 21:50 you're scaring me!! As someone who can't see the next step down from over her boobs, and consequently taken several near-catastrophic falls down the steps😢. So, how about bagging up those items PRIOR to carrying them all down the stairs? I love you ladies! Please be careful! This is for everyone that reads this and is so inspired. 🎉You can easily rig up a rope to lower the bags down over the railing. My mom died 2 years ago, and I retired then, as well. I'm working my way thru a massive amount of clutter. You're joy at the results of your work is very motivating. Thankyou!!! ✨️

I have brought over 4 car loads of stuff to The Humane Society Savannah, GA. which sell in their thrift shop. The money goes directly for the care of the animals which is where my 🐈 rescued me!🥰 I am working on MORE SWEDISH DEATH DECLUTTERING of 30! years of " stuff" and items that I never got around to selling because of the Covid crisis ( no one getting together to buy) and some health problems which are slowing me down. When I declutter I listen to tapes like yours. So inspiring!😊

I did this with my husband’s closet, and I had three bags of clothes. I gave one of them away to a friend who was in need of clothes and the other two are donated to the shelter. and his closet is so much better now he doesn’t have so many things to choose from and it’s very minimal.

I have done the Swedish Death Clean. I have five dressy tops, five plain, five leggings and two pairs of jeans. I do have some dresses but I always wear them in the summer every day and If I get anything new, something goes. Minimal bed clothes, bathroom towels. I have my grandchildren’s pictures and only a couple of decorative items. My paperwork is minimum too. Cupboards and fridge. Every thing is done so my daughter doesn’t have to deal with a lot. Lol, at 66 I am very active and don’t want to have a lot around. Less is more space.
