I think the problem is because its in your utility drawer and you're seeing it all the time. This is really a holiday item. Put this nutcracker set with your Christmas decorations. I have a nut cracker like yours, as well as the picks that dig the nut meats out of the shell. One of my grandmothers always had a dish of whole walnuts, pecans, and almonds around Christmas. The dish itself was wood and had a recess to keep the cracker and picks. After cracking several nuts, one's hand would acquire a faint metallic smell from the cracker.

I have a set just like that. It belonged to my grandmother and I recently found it in the mobile home she lived in on my parents' property until her death in 2009. We recently bought the mobile home to move elsewhere and started going through the relatively small amount of items left there. I'm allergic to nuts so it's not like I'm going to use it but I did rescue the set from a kitchen drawer and brought it home. I remember my grandpa cracking nuts with it. It's small, and as you said, well-made. I'm keeping it.

My Mom lived thru The Great Depression & made me aware & to appreciate what we have. Yes I do agree to decluttering. Keeping warm clothes that fit is smart. You haven't pitch the nutcracker all this time, keep it. To be honest, I think u have a sentimental attachment to it deep down. Just keep it.

The nut picks are also great for various cleaning tasks. I use mine at least a few times each month, either wrapped in a dishcloth or bare, to get into hard to clean areas (around the faucet, Tupperware lid rims, etc). Also good for crab legs. Definitely keep!

I remember it from childhood and used it growing up. And I didn't question my dad keeping it. What I questioned was him keeping 5 sets!

I have that exact nutcracker set and I still use mine, but usually for another purpose. First the pointy tools are to dig out the nut meat from the shell. We used them all the time as kids. Now I use my nut cracker primarily to open small jar lids that are on too tight. Keep it and find new ways to use them. I also have a back buddy and I’m sure my daughter will be happy I have mine. I think if I told her now that I had it and what it was for it might walk right out the door when my back was turned. 😊 I have been death cleaning for years and still have a long way to go to perfect the art. We recently moved and even though I have downsized my life’s inventory there is still too much excess so I’m on a quest to double down and free up my life this year. I threw out and donated boxes of stuff just today. It feels great!!! Love your channel. You always provide sound and doable insights.

I'm keeping mine. The stabby things are for prying out stubborn nuts😊 also it works as a bottle opener for small screw on lids.

I also have a nutcracker set and the wooden tree bowl that goes with the nutcracker set. I use it when I buy the whole unshelled nuts around Christmas time. It reminds me when I was a kid and is a pleasant happy nostalgic memory for me. My kids grew up with it so they know what it is. Also… I keep 19:55 things that I don’t love because they are functional and I use them and can’t afford to just buy new. I was taught not to be wasteful. By the way, I think you should keep the nutcracker.😊

I haven’t started Swedish death cleaning, but would like to help my parents if they’re open to it. The consideration of quality is something I don’t hear many minimalists mention, but SO many things produced today just do not stand the test of time like items did in the past. Minimalism has completely reformed how I now shop and helped me avoid things that are not necessary or that would not bring long term function or enjoyment. That has freed up our finances in great ways. But I still often keep old, well-made things even if I’m not actively using them now. I would love to hear your thoughts on minimalism in a time of economic uncertainty. I’m finding it hard to balance knowing that it is God who ultimately provides what we need but wanting to be responsible in how I use the resources He’s given and possibly prepare more for challenging times.

My daughter inherited hers from her grandmother she uses it for crab legs and the picks are helpful too. I still have mine from my mother and I haven’t used it for a while but I have lent it to my daughter for extras if she needs them.

I began this path after a near death experience thirty years ago. I have a notebook of final affairs , everyone has a copy. I declutter on a daily basis and live rather minimally. We have hubs childhood nutcracker and picks on a bowl of nuts every Christmas. .The nuts in shell go to the squirrels after the holiday.

I keep my nutcracker in my utility drawer and use it frequently to open bottle tops and lids on cream cartons. I keep one of the picks near my shoes to pick dried mud out of the tread of my shoes. I have at times used the other pick to loosen a knot.

You answered your own question. You currently treasure the well-made and lovely little tool. It cannot be replaced only mimicked by something not worth buying. I'm not going to tell you to keep it or toss it. I will say that it's not clutter.

That nutcracker would have Christmas memories for me. The pick is for getting the bits of nut that catch in the crevices of the shell. We also had a cracker that was shaped like half a walnut shell, with a screw type rod that one twists until the pressure cracks the shell of the nut inside. Yours does not take up a lot of room. You think it is pretty. It is high quality. Yes, one can crack nuts between two flat stones. I would keep both. Yes, show the kids how to use them.

We use our nutcracker for eating crab or lobster. The other items are for removing the nut meat (or crab/lobster) from the shells.

You definitely should keep the nutcracker, you should take a picture and put it into a folder or note book and write about the joy and memories you have attached to it. You could then write about memories with other items and keep the folder/ book along with your will and important documents. When you are gone it is something they can share and tell their children.

Great video. I’ve always been scared of having a loved one wade through my stuff after- it was nice to discover it had a label. I literally worked like a maniac in the last 4 months and decluttered 50 percent of the stuff in the house and it’s fabulous. I’ve always been a somewhat minimalist but my DH hates both the M(minimalism)and the D(decluttering)words and wants to keep everything. First hand I heard from my young DS that he didn’t want my style of cookware and it was an eye opener. The younger generation only wants functionality and style, expensive or not. I now either declutter or use everything I have. Nothing is too sacred or too nice to save.

We had the same type of nutcracker and tools for removing the nuts from the shells....They ARE beautiful and I have no idea where these items went. I certainly don't think about it every day! haha

Preface to say I am a nearly 60 year old who has been on a path to minimalism for several decades. (We homeschooled, which is why it's taking me so long!) I'm very familiar with Swedish Death Cleaning. That, along with decluttering are two of my favorite hobbies. 😆 I have several items from my childhood on my kitchen walls: a board with flatware my family used curved into hangers, e.g. Since it is beautiful, I might consider finding a space to display the nutcracker/sharps on one of your kitchen walls. More opportunity to enjoy it for yourself and others rather than in the drawer. 🥰 Just a thought. :) Appreciating your channel! Those are used to pick the pieces of walnuts out of the walnut halves, after the whole walnut is cracked open.

Definitely keep the nutcracker! It is beautiful & rare & very small. The two little stick things are for digging small pieces of the nut that may be stuck in the little grooves. It’s a piece of history that will be lost forever♥️ Keep it!

I'm originally from New England and transplanted to the Pacific Northwest. The "nutcracker" is a staple in the utensil drawer. It is used to crack the shells of crabs and lobsters!

We had a nut bowl that had all sorts of nuts still in the shell, and we had a nut cracker with 2 spears/picks like those. Not sure what the picks are supposed to be used for. However, when we crack walnuts or Brazil nuts we used the picks to get pieces of nut trapped inside the shell out to eat.

The straight sticks with a little curve on the end are for pulling little pieces of stuck nut out of the shell, also good to pry open the occasional reluctant walnut shell!

The nutcracker is good for crab, too. I have one, and we never use it but I keep it, anyway. 😊. I think you should keep it and treasure it. I believe the picks are to help get the broken pieces of nuts out of the shell. Or to help get crab meat out of the shells. Love your videos 😊

I have several of those nut crackers and picks, and you're right. The new ones are flimsy and bend. The old ones are sturdy and last! I think you should keep it. It obviously fits the H in your HUNT method. Its beauty and quality speak to you and honor your values and your past. There are other uses for it, too! We use both the crackers and picks to help us eat whole lobster and crabs. They are very useful for that!

I have a set too and I/we always used it for cleaning crabs. My parents still have their set, and I literally bought a vintage set for myself because it not only brought back memories as a child when my father taught all of us the proper way to eat/clean crabs. I still use mine.

After my mother died and I was sorting through all her stuff, I wondered about the story behind many items. If I’d known the significance they had to her, I might have kept some of them. But mostly I just kept the things I liked. So I decided to label some of my own treasures with the story behind them e.g. sticking a note at the back of a piece of art, tucking a little card inside the box that contains a family piece of jewellery. In that way, I hope that one day my children will be able to make a more informed choice about what to keep after I die.

Treasure the pick set! My family in New Orleans had them, one per person, to eat the crabs we had caught and cooked. Then, growing up in California, we used them for cracking nuts of all kinds. The picks were essential to extracting every luscious tidbit. Eating fresh food like these is so much better than processed stuff! Worth trying even now. These cracker/pick sets can teach the value of our food, like eating mindfully. Treasure!

When I was a small kid, my parents and grandparents used nutcrackers (as well as the pointy picking tool) so lots of memories for me. I've heard my folks (aged 86 & 92) talk about memories with other things and their own ancestors. Sometimes I feel their vibe; other times not as much.

Treasure (keep) or Toss (donate, sell, recycle, trash) These questions when it comes to making a purchase, cover that you don’t need to ask yourself the 4th question “Will anyone else be glad that I purchased this item - affect my current shopping habits.” I have to smile and gently shake my head at this one as you have already chosen to immensely downsize your accumulated belongings to only keep that which you find honoring/gives you joy, helpful/useful, necessary and only make purchases of same - should they be unhappy it won’t be about your purchase but will be because they miss you - ❤ Numerous others have commented on the metal nut cracker and picks, so here’s my 2 cents - if you don’t want to use them - get rid of them. As I watch this video I notice you are waving your hands around - a lot - and I would like to make the suggestion that you set up an area with a comfortable chair to sit in and visit with us like an friend having a cup of tea/coffee together. It is more relaxing and I don’t believe you would be waving your hands around if we were just visiting. 🙂 One thing I’m noticing about videos of people who have gotten rid if many items (Minimalized) the video has the voices echoing in a larger room, so do more items absorb sound? Is there a way to counter the echoing or just a smaller room? I understand that wall to wall carpet does help as does window drapes… Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. ❤

I say put the nutcracker set in your Christmas box with the intentions of buying a bag of whole nuts at Christmas and putting them out, tell the story of the nutcracker and make new memories of using it. BTW, I posted under your 3 things video I was going to clean out under my kitchen sink. It is done and I found 5 unopened bottles of Meyers soap!! 😱I got rid of a lot of things, have a box of donate and it feels terrific! I started a pantry in my back bedroom so I can actually SEE what I have!

I use my nutcracker to open bottles and small jars. The little things are to pick the pieces out of Brazil nuts. At least that's what we've always used them for. Keep it. Individual water or juice bottles can be hard to open as we age. (70 year old thumbs, here)

Treasure the nutcrackers as you have acknowledged you DO find it to be a treasure! We also use ours opening crab legs! You’re far from dead! Plus, it is not our job to relieve our children from all struggles in life. So, in my assessment, your philosophy is being implemented well by minimizing while still holding onto things that interest you! I am only 52 and have also been on a decluttering/minimizing/intentional living journey with your (and others) help! The actual “death cleaning” part should be relatively easy at the point at or near death with implementing the minimalist concept as a lifestyle. You have established an excellent balance in living with things and leaving minimal burden. Thank you for your mentorship on this journey!

I'm going to say this. I know why you never de-clutter the nutcracker and it's utensils. Btw, the utensils are for getting small pieces of nut out of the shell.. The reason I know is because you like knowing that that nutcracker resides in your kitchen drawer. It's almost a comfort knowing that it's there, even if you never use it. Yes, it is pretty too. I know this because I have a 30-year-old can of Double Q salmon in the back of my pantry. Surely, I'm never going to try to eat it but every time I clean out my pantry, I put the old can back in there and I smile. I know it's there and oddly its comforting. Even if I never think about it again until the next time I'm cleaning out my pantry. Put your nutcracker back in the kitchen drawer for safe keeping.

The picks are for removing nut meat from the shells or shells from the meat. They are especially useful with pecans and walnuts. My parents’ set, a wedding gift in the early 1950s, has a matching bowl that has holes to hold the tools and cracker. It makes an impressive display of nuts and tools. I have many memories of nuts being cracked down through the years. Treasure it.

Keep that nutcracker! lol I’m sure my family had these long before I was born. We would keep nut bowls during Christmas holidays filled with mixed nuts in the shells with those nutcrackers. When there was company, it was something they could do with their hands while sitting and talking. Down here in the south, we had beau coup pecan trees and those lil stick things were there to dig out the ‘grooves’ in the pecan meat. I hope this explains the whole thing. Take care🥰

I have my mom’s nutcracker and one of my own. Works great to crack a tough crab claw! I used mine not longs ago to grip the lid on a vanilla extract bottle that would not come off.

Those of us who live on the East Coast use these utensils for cracking lobster shells. The picks are used to dig out lobster meat from the shells once they are cracked open. . I have about a dozen sets of them for summer feasts. Never thought of them as nut crackers, too! Great video!

Nut crackers....I taught my kids how to use them, and I like to have a bowl of nuts with shells over holidays and family dinners. so my grands can learn! Cracking nuts prevents over eating, and it teaches patience. Plus, we talk to each other while we crack!

My dad always cracked nuts with his and I still have it. I'm 58 yrs old and I am keeping it for myself. I'll let my kids know they can get rid of it after I'm gone because they don't have the same memories. But it brings me joy and reminds me of good times. It's Ok to keep things that only you love. Plus its small and doesn't take up much space.

We used to keep a nutcracker and nutpicks in a bowl of nuts at Christmas. I have the family set and I have been promising myself to revisit the tradition but just never have. Part of why I kept them, is because the picks also are great for lobster, and a million other things, and I DO use them - just not often enough to warrant keeping them. I just can't let go of them partly because of the warm glow I feel every time I see them.

Hi from Italy! The same happened to me: I was decluttering not to leave the burden on to my daughter, and then I found out I was doing Sweedish death clean! My opinion about the nutcracker, or whatever it's called: just toss it. I don't keep things just because they are nice and very small and not in my way. None of them being good reasons, on the contrary: it's how cluttery starts (IMMO)! Second: the question, can anyone be happy if I keep this, is a very dangerous question! It's the reason why I kept for decades all of my pictures from when I was young, and my daughter, fair enough, got bothered after watching just few of them, and so was I, to be honest! And that was the reason I kept also all of my books, having her saying, at the age of seven!, momy, what do I do with all your books, when I have mine?!?!?! Fair enough. And there are public library also. Noy all the books are to keep, only because they're "classic". #freefromclutter #semplifylives

My dad was a master at using this, but I never got the hang of it. You got me wondering about the last time I'd seen ours, and, lo and behold, it was at the back of my utensil drawer, which has been decluttered at least once. It made the cut for me, even though ours is nowhere near as cool as yours.

My mother-in-law had a nut cracker like that. We let it go when we had to break up her home. My husband says that he used the hook thingy to get the nuts out of the shell if it was a tight fit. But you make a valid point.... they don't make quality items like that anymore. I think you should keep it because you do find it beautiful and appreciate its craftsmanship. I read The Swedish Death Cleaning book a few years back. I loved the concept. My husband and I did a lot of work with the homes of both of our parents after they passed. I totally understand the mindset of that generation having lived through wartime and do not judge them. I don't want to leave a legacy of stuff for my girls to have to go through when I pass. I tell them all the time that they will be so lucky going through my well curated home. haha

I still have my nut cracker and have used it when my sister who has a pecan tree gives me a bag of uncracked nuts. You never know. I love my back buddy, I use it most days, even in the middle of the night if I’m having a hard time. I keep it under my bed. It’s funny, I’ve had it for years and many times wondered if I should declutter it, but I’m convinced now that it greatly adds to my well being so I will keep it indefinitely. The little sticks are used for 2 purposes. 1) For once you've cracked a nut, you can wedge it into the crack to open further. 2) for getting the small pieces that get stuck inside of a nut (for example: a walnut) out of the membrane so you don't waste any of the nut.

My mantra is: Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful. William Morris You believe the nutcracker to be beautiful. Your children might not but then they can pass it on to someone who does, because you have already had the conversation. I am practising Swedish Death Cleaning for the past several years and talk openly with my children about it.

I understand as we even had a bowl that held those tools and the unshelled nuts. The nutcracker works to unscrew the lids on water bottles, soda ,bottles, etc. when your strength or skin can’t handle the cap to twist it off. So useful. The picks are used to dislodged the nut once it is cracked apart, such as walnuts. I often find I need the picks for cleaning crooks and crannies and lots of other picky things. Keep it.

We all have nutcrackers in Louisiana. Pecans galore over here. The picks clean out the pieces of wood/shell in between the pecan. Also used to crack open crab legs!

I have the same nutcracker too. One Christmas i bought my adult kids the nutcracker along with nuts that were still in their shells

I love clutter. I have my kitchen walls and little shelves all filled with little items I love. I smile when I look at them, and the majority were gifts not purchases. I also order jewelry making supplies, and too many beads. Yet, this is a relaxing hobby for me and I am about finished accumulating these sorts of items. I am saving some things that may not be available/affordable in the future. Impulsive buying in general? no way. I am content to replace clothing items at a resale shop. However...I am decluttering, the process is ongoing. And I am organizing what I do have so items are not scattered all over. I welcome giving away purely decorative items that I don't love or find useful. And the process will continue for the foreseeable future. Wish me luck finding the time to organize and sort and say goodbye to too much stuff but in uncertain times = 2 is one and one is none.

I would keep it and leave a label attached to the saying what it is, and when you remember using it. That way thy can decide whether they would want to buy shelled nuts at Christmas and use them. You could add a note saying "I don't mind if you decide to declutter this". I'm sorting my books into boxes with a few people in mind that might be able to use them. That way it just looks like we're moving (we are) but I can put stuff in the garage and if anything happens they can give them the box or items with labels of what they are/were. You can try it out with them for nostalgia. It's not a huge item to hang onto. Thanks for sharing. You've given me a lot of things to think about. Xx

Usually used for walnuts and the picks dig out the meat. We had the exact same set growing up.

We can always imagine some future scenario where an item might be useful. But if that's our criteria, we will keep everything. Just in the way you talk about the nutcracker, itseems it brings you joy. So keep it for that reason. Maybe compromise by getting rid of the picks.

I've been looking for one of those nutcrackers. DD asked if she could have the one I owned several years ago. I've looked for a replacement ever since. Those two things are nut picks. You use them to pick the nut meat out of the shells.
