You can also make lots of little wooden stakes and stab them into the ground so they keep the fire log upright if you can't find rocks. Stake them upright, or diagonally, also a pile of dirt or wet mud etc will work to keep it up too. Anything really! Put lots of dirt inside of a plastic bag and you've got a makeshift rock! Small pebbles inside a bag make for one big rock! Since you don't want to carry big rocks to your next campsite etc Or you can just sharpen the main 4 logs and stake them into the ground then do it normally. Really cool how you didn't shave off the entire inside though, using a saw to make that cut so it doesn't shave off the entire inside when you baton. That is a really cool way to do it!

The rocks is a good idea, you can use what's available in time, for the oxygen problem I always do 2 notches at the bottom when you cut your 3 inches opposite so you can put a branch as a plug, it doesn't take very long time as you're already cutting it so when needed just remove the plug sticks 1 or 2 and there you go, if your in altitude just don't put plugs it's gone need more oxygen.

You can also dig a small hole and out the 4 pieces assembled into the hole which will offer stability, if you carve the tips of the 4 pieces it will allow you to place a pot on top without cutting off airflow. "The more you know the less you need" - ray mears

Be 100% sure the rocks are DRY and were found on LAND and were NOT in or adjacent to water. Additionally do NOT use sandstone (or similar rocks). The reason for all this is wet rocks or sandstone type rocks can BLOWUP when heated.

It's redundant to say "four quarters". If you quarter something, it's impossible to have any number of pieces other than 4.
@CypherV0
@CypherV0 Ай бұрын
You must be a riot at parties. Also, “three quarters” exists as a valid measurement and thus it can just be a force of habit to specify the need for four quarters. Since you brought it up, it's a good idea to take some cotton string such as you would use for tying up a turkey or natural twine which you can actually buy at the dollar store. If you use a natural fiber then it will burn or you can purposely burn it when you're done. I know that paracord is very popular and I have tons of it myself that I've collected over the years but you want to use something natural rather than something with some kind of plastic or man-made fibers

I wonder what would happen if you crammed one into a metal coffe can either attached to a stick or rigged with handles so it can be picked up and transported or used like a torch??? Like I'm probably gonna try it now to see first by simply tying a small bundle of sticks to my hip and maintaining as needed and second by filling the middle up like a bush craft candle and just lighting it and going along see how long it lasts heck can cram it into the ground like that and cook at a elevated height to save ur back

Now, yes, a bushcraft torch... I still haven't accepted WIRE as bushcraft, it's even good for survival and camping, but it's not something from the bush in my opinion, in my opinion, bush things are just hand tools and natural resources. Of course I'll take a plastic tarp, a flashlight, and my cell phone, but whatever I build, I want it to be able to be done with just simple tools.

I'd caution against rocks. Pay attention to where you picked those rock from. Under no circumstances should you use rocks found near water, there's a chance they can explode violently when the moisture inside them begins to boil.
