2 days ago, I 'rescued' a Phalaenopsis from a big box store here in the USA. It was in about a 2 inch pot and living in 100% sphagnum moss. No bark at all. The moss was so compact and dried out, it was VERY hard, and difficult to clean off the roots. The plant looks very healthy for the condition of the planting medium. I cleaned the roots and removed a few dead ones. I repotted it using bark, and put it in a 5 inch slotted orchid pot (it's the only one I had) that I put into another more decorative pot. It's in my east facing kitchen window. I am hoping the remaining buds will open. Time will tell! 🤞🤞

When I get orchids that are potted in super compact spag moss like I did about a month ago or so i waited a few days for the orchid to get used to it’s new environment. After that I watered it throughly and left it for about 15-20 minutes to soften the hard moss after that I just picked some of the moss to make it fluffier/airier so roots can breath. All buds survived and some have recently opened. I won’t be replacing media until after blooms start to wither into a mix of moss and bark as my climate requires some moss to hold humidity as my summers are super hot and dry and winters are cold and humid.

Thanks,@@KaritaGR Unfortunately, she has died... I thought she looked fine, but somehow got crown rot (I was always very careful to not get water in there). All 3 leaves fell off in my hands, and the roots were shriveled. 😒😒 I will try again!

The pot you put it in is too large a jump in size. Orchid roots like to be a bit crowded. Your plant will probably be ok, but it will be a very long time before it recovers completely for the transplanting.

Flower triggering on Phaelenopsis hybrids is actually quite simple, unless they are a cross of one of the the summer bloomers. But you will not typically find those types in flower shops, only in specialized nurseries. They need a cooler nighttime temperature for at least 2 weeks two to initiate flower spikes. That is why you can find them in flower all year round. It is quite easy for nurseries to get them to flower at the convenient time.

Mine bloom at any time as long as temperatures during the afternoon don't exceed 26°C. Central heating keeps temps above 18°C all year. Dosen't stop the blooming. High afternoon temps stop the blooming. My oldest Phal is 12 years old and always behaved like that. I never give it cool temps.

I love the plant advice but as someone who works at a plantstore I have to strongly advice against knocking off the pot to take a look at the roots. If the root ball is not compact the soil will spill everywhere and people like me have to clean that mess up.

When you compare 2 orchids and say one is a better quality than the other, you should compare orchids that are of similar age. The one sold in the big box store on the right is clearly a younger plant, meaning less flowers and thinner stalks. Also grey roots on Phaelenopsis are not an indication of poor root quality, it simply means that the orchid needs watering. Roots turn green when they are wet, it just means the grey of the velamen turns see through. What you should in stead look out for is dead roots. Also the number of flowers is not a reliable way to judge quality unless you compare the same hybrid. The number of flowers varies depending on the specific hybrid. Some are prolific bloomers while others produce less but sometimes bigger blooms.

I disagree about leaving the orchid in the same pot and medium for two to four and as long as eight years. It depends on the humidity, temperature and watering practice as to how long your plant will survive. Every orchid that I have purchased in recent years are grown in straight spagnum. So as soon as I get it home, you have to take out of the pot and remove all the medium. Then you can change it up to bark, perlite etc. On the whole, this is a great video filled with great information.
@colleenmcdonnell5713
@colleenmcdonnell5713 10 ай бұрын
If your plant is in sphagnum you don’t have to repot it as soon as you get it home, I’m not sure how that myth got started. It will be fine if the roots are healthy and you won’t need to water as often. Eight years is a long time, but you can probably wait for at least a year, maybe two.

I disagree about getting the ones that have flowers that have all opened 🤔When you get ones with buds, you know it has more time left to bloom vs if they are all open, you don't know how long they have been open and how much longer they have left.
@ThaoNguyen-hl6mb
@ThaoNguyen-hl6mb Жыл бұрын
Well, I actually agree in parts with the video because it's the middle of winter right now in Canada. So if I were to buy an orchid, the whole transport from warm retailers to minus 10 degrees outside to the car to a warmer destination will 90% send the plant into shock and the buds will never open. If the orchids were a gift, that would send confusion and heartbreak to my friend to see the buds wither and fall. If the orchid were for me, I wouldn't care either way; the spikes would be snipped so the plant could bounce back sooner.

You are right but he did explain the reason to choose one with the most open flowers is there is a slight chance that the remaining buds will not open due to change of environment
@chuck4714

@@rhodealexandre6583 okay... I still disagree .. I think it's better to choose one with un opened buds 🙄 Also, he said that any root that isn't green or silver only, is bad. Which is 100 % false. Roots Can be yellow as well and are still absolutely healthy. It just means they haven't gotten much sunlight. I love this channel, but I'm an orchid enthusiast and some of the things he said In this I don't fully agree with.
@victorb145
@victorb145 Жыл бұрын
@@chuck4714 I agree with you. For me the only thing I look at the flower, is if I like it. Everything else is history. Yes lots of flowers and a thick stock meant the plant was doing very well while it was growing the flowers. The plant may also be very tired after. I took that leaves roots and media. Eight-year-old media or whatever he said it was. I will recognize it as old and walk away. The plant may have adjusted as the media aged and broke down. But eventually it will rot the roots, after that long in old broken-down media I would be afraid that the shift back to good media would be very difficult for the plant to get over.

Lucky you. In some areas, a some areas of the globe, this type of orchid would not survive in the same pot year after year. It depends on your micro- climate. In Hawaii, we have 10 microclimates., from hot/dry to wet/wet. On the wet side 200 inches of rain per year, everything rots including plant medium.

Thanks a lot for these information! I like regroup some orchids from my friends they were abandoned. I was successfully reflowed for six orchids from January to July. Unfortunately two of them got sick in July: some leaves turned yellow and found some dark color on the stems and underarms of leaves,I think it’s mold. One is harm the top of the orchid have to cut off,but it’s very healthy one and has many nice strong roots,don’t know it will get the new head or not? After watched this video,I am learning a lot how to take care of the orchids , never sprayed the leaves that was I always did it! Caz I am leaving an apartment, not enough ventilation, some water in the stem can get some mold or bacteria let the leaves turning yellow. Thank you so much!

❤❤ Ja estou seguindo e deixei meu like!

If you have really big amount of aerial roots it means that probably your orchid not really like the condition in the pot. Probably suffocating or have not enough water, so it grow additional aerial roots in search of water and nutrients. Sometimes it just an orchid personality tho 😅

Great video. I have been growing and reflowering phals for 10 + years and still found some helpful tips here. I have never tried cuttings and am inspired now to give that a try . I was wondering about how long it usually takes before roots show ?( or at what point to know there is no hope and give up on a batch ) For those trying to encourage rebloom, i understand that having night temperature lower than daytime is important. Easy here in Canada if thermostats are turned down 5-10 C at night for sleeping .

I have to disagree with the roots fact, being silvery in appearance just means it’s dry and being green just means that it’s hydrated,doesn’t indicate that it is bad or actively rotting. However if the roots are nowhere to be seen or even worse brownish in colour(in case of the moth orchid) that’s a clear sign of root rot

Some (about half!) of these advices are opposite from others I have seen/heard of professionally gardeners in other countries. This makes me very confused. Like a woman in US that said the soil gets drained from nourishment and should be replaced every 2:nd or 3:rd year. I have another pro in Thailand and those advices maybe just apply in a tropical climate, but he show how to ensure the damaged orchid is clean and what to use as natural antibiotics. Like garlic and cinnamon. Then yet another in Australia that have been kind of a support as I am a beginner on orchids and try to get it as right as I can.

Is it possible to show how to make orchid soil at home? Does orchid release oxygen during night? Would be interesting to know more about which indoor plants release oxygen 24/7 and which of them safe and suggested to have in the children bedrooms. Thank you.

THE FIRST LOOK AT THE ROOTS! Then everything else. Size of the flowers, roots, leaves and spikes depends on variety. Amount of flowers will be different in next home blooming, so doesn't matter how many do you have now. Check roots, leaves, that's it.
