When filmning this video we missed talking about the potential threat of trace minerals in the tap water. The minerals are often fluoride, chlorine and sodium used to clean the tap water.
These minerals can build up inside the plant and especially the tips of the leaves causing them to get yellow and brown (meaning that it kills the cells). To avoid this problem use distilled water, rainwater or filtered water.
Another way can be to leave tap water out in a container for 24-48 hours before using it to water you’re plants. This will make most of the chemicals disappear.
Another cause for the yellow and brown tips can be salt buildup from to much fertiliser.
As many of you has mentioned we got the wrong name for one of the varieties. It should be Calathea majestica “Whitestar” and not Calathea ornata “Pinstripe”. Thanks!

I'm a plant novice, got a Calathea just because it's beautiful, then got a little worried after researching it and hearing how difficult it is supposed to be. But mine got about 10 new leaves since December and it started flowering a couple of days ago so I seem to be doing something right! Gorgeous plants :)

I think a lot of it has to do with where you live and whether you’re going to be accidentally neglectful or over attentive! Before I knew anything about plants I over watered, and I also live in a pretty warm humid location. So my calatheas were fine- cactuses not so much!

60 year old indoor plant lover from Germany here. Your videos are the most informing ones. Sometimes it feels like the plants choose you for speaking out for them like: hey guys, this man is our mouth, listen and don’t torture us any longer! :) I learned a lot from you, especially about transpiration and so on. My plants say : thank you! They are happier than before. Btw, I had children, cats and dogs, no one had a problem with the poison plants. I think the secret is: create a situation, which is not boring and they will have other things in mind :) Sorry for my bad English, just wanted to give you a positive reply

I work in a big box store in California, USA. If you want to buy one of these plants make sure you get them when they've only been in the store a few days. After that they will be showing a lot of signs of Browning due to the cold weather and lack of humidity. And they will not look so good. And check the prices if they are in different pots because there can be a huge price difference depending on what pot there in. a basic pot can be a $10 price difference compared to a Fufu pot for the same plant. And in the summertime always check the clearance rack to see if you can get one that is able to be nursed back to health at a good price.

@@musclemanawesomeness5550 certain words and syllables can just be difficult to pronounce for example; in Swedish we have three ‘extra’ letters ö, ä, and å. These are pronounced very differently than how English would just pronounce o, a, and a. -Ä is pronounced more closely to English e, like the a in “ayyy” (but without the y), kinda like “aerh” or “aeih”, more of an e, i and a mix. -Å is pronounced quite similarly to O in English, kinda like “oeh”. -And Ö is pronounced like “er” almost, it has more of an a at the beginning and is closer to ä, but they do have a difference, I find that ö sounds like it has a R at the end more so than Ä. Point being, he probably just has a more difficult time on those types of words in English(ones with a or o, etc) more so than other words because of the fairly different pronunciation in Swedish :)

If I didnt have friends in Stockholm I might come closer to believing that its hard to say but we talked about this. We think he is using a latin A because that "a" like the nasal "a" ...sounds wrong to him. But it is easily over come by just saying it. The same is true for English speakers learning to speak Chinese or Japanese... you just have to say it correctly until it sounds right. Which is probably a few weeks. He on the other hand has mastered the pronunciation of most other English words without much accent. The second thing is a confusing of the words access and excess. These are pronounced correctly but misused. Understandable, but also easy to fix in edit. These videos are highly edited, just ask him to change out access and excess when necessary. "...access to (available) water" vs "...having excess (too much) water". Love the channel. Great information, probably the best plant education site i've seen. Nothing wrong with friendly criticism.

Mist in the morning before the sun comes up. It’s will take a long time to evaporate, which will be a steady increase in humidity and help the plant retain moisture. If the humidity immediately around the plant is above 50%, then this shouldn’t adversely affect it. You should have good air circulation for the rest of the day - maybe use a fan (not directly on the plant) to inhibit fungal growth. Plant it in a terra cotta pot to aide in even soil moisture. Keep a humidifier close by. Water only with distilled water or water that hasn’t been treated with fluoride. Fertilize with a MSU (13-3-15) orchid fertilizer.

Having listening around… I think you sound like you really know what you’re talking about! I subscribed! Beginner here and I bought a collection of them: 7!! 😬 But in my defense I grew up around a big beautiful outdoor garden and people that loved plants. 👍🏼 So I think I am pretty good on choosing my plants 🪴… I didn’t uprooted the plants in the store but took my time examining them very carefully. That said, 6 of my calatheas are doing fantastic after 3 months even with my tap water 😮!! But one of them started to give me a hard time… soil is perfect, humidity is good (and I mist them), and water drainage is good, the light and placement is good, temperature variation is good… so the only thing that I am thinking about is: perhaps my tap water (I didn’t know… but the other ones are growing and giving me so much beautiful baby leaves! Almost every week!!) so I don’t know… I will try a couple things around the water quality and humidity… because this one is in a “corner”, she is big, and not with the “group”. I live in Florida.

Here in California, USA, many apartments and homes have a heating system that is on the wall and it's a gas heater. The problem with these kinds of gas heater is that it makes everything sticky. So if you have one of these wall heaters do not put your plants anywhere near them. And if you have your plants in your house you still need to wipe down your leaves with a chemical-free clean towel with just water on it every time you feel the leaves are getting sticky or it will kill your plant.

I became a bit obsessed with calatheas and counted 27 different specimens spread around the house just now. The latest arrival was a warscewiczii that was delivered yesterday. I lost a beauty star due to, perhaps, over watering. It arrived, I sprayed it with rainwater, poured some into the pot and the following day it was dead. The same happened with a crocatta a while ago. I had a jump when I heard about the misting pattern, I tend to mist everyday and they seem to like it but may leave it for a day or two sometimes. I only use rainwater or filtered water as I saw several other videos here on KZfaq and read elsewhere that calatheas hate hard water from the tap because of the chemicals etc. I would then question the suggestion of showering these not so cheap and delicate creatures unless you are sure the water in your mains is adequate - I'd rather not risk. I absolutely love these videos, Swedish Plantguys is incredibly informative and so well done. Thank you!

I use tap water. No problems with all my Calatheas. Depends on where you live and the type of tap water you have.

@MultiTroll84 not sure why people have to be so aggressively dismissive or self assured when they haven’t actually lived in every country in the world. I live in Germany and our Calatheas react instantly to tap water. We always use rain water and in winter distilled water.

Your video us by far the most informative guide re: caring for the calathea! We, plant newbies, unfortunately went out today to buy the calathea without knowing it was a high-maintenance plant... but hopefully your video will guide us to the right direction!! 🤞🏻

I just did the same 😥. Hopped on KZfaq to see what help was out there for us both and when he said "this plant is not for a beginner", I felt that. I've killed succulents before 😳😭. I'm going to give it my best. This plant is too beautiful to let it die.

Hello.. I am watching your videos from the Philippines. You are brilliant, I like the way how you teach caring for the plants. Amazing, it's basically really really hot in the Philippines so I most of the time move my Calathea plants to a bit of shed and windy place. I noticed some brown leaves on one of my calathea so I got a bit worried. I hope it will still do well.

I found this single very informative video on KZfaq regarding calathea plant care.. I found very very helpful . because.my velvet calathea got thrusty so he started to fold his leaves but I didn't have any idea that he needed water at the same time ...I thought he needed humidity but I have doubts about it so looking for calathea complete care video.. found this video regarding the same and watered the calathea..and got surprised within a minute calathea leaves back in his healthy look ❤... Thank you very much ❤

Fantastic video. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I have a few calathea’s and marantas in my collection. I find the maranta’s are easier to care for. Killed a beauty star and a musaica, I’m working on bring them back. Best thing I’ve learned....humidity is key! 🪴

Calathea makoyana was one of the first plants i got. At the beginning i didn't know anything about caring for them and i used tap water when watering it. Well it was a mistake, as it has developed a lot of brown edges very quickly. I switched to watering it with rain water and cut of a lot of damaged leaves and its looking much healthier now. Im extremely happy shes doing fine. (I own 5 different calatheas now, i love them (especially white fusion))

That was a really insightful video. I grow 8 different varieties of calathea (plus 5 other marantacae), and I've watched tons of videos about them, but I've learned so many things. Thank you! My nightmare is the thrips. Unfortunately I've lost my leopardina to them, and my albertii isn't well either. Fortunately, they haven't invaded many of my plants.

Try self watering (hydro) stakes in the pots. it means that the plant only takes water as it needs it so impossible to overwater or underwater! Just make sure the container ( I use a large clear jar) holding the water is below the plant and not above or it will just soak the plant. You can use 1 container with multiple spikes for multiple plants and you only have to water the container. Great for hard to reach plants and works if you are away from home. Add extra diluted fertiliser to the water in the container and you don't need to worry about when to feed either! Made all the difference for my plants. Definitely worth a try...very cheap too. Jo

After watching this I watered my calathea rufibarba till the bottom drips... it was curling up and hadn’t changed its shape lately. About 30 mins have passed and now it looks alive again. And it’s slowly moving.. 😭😭😭 thank you so much. I thought it doesn’t need much water since it’s winter but I left it too dry I think. Now I know better. Thanks so much.

I love how you explain the way the plant grow and react to the environment. I live in the Philippines and they love being grown in dapple sunlit areas which is under a tree. Thank you for mentioning that they do much better outside if weather permits :) thanks for sharing you knowledge

I would like mine to be low and full! It’s a new one for me and I plan on putting a few together. Right now they,3 are in their nursery pots. 3”-4” getting acclimated to my home. I have 20+ plants in a South window, the only windows are South but are at the side of the room and are back far enough from direct light. I have sheer panels and for 12 years,my plants thrive. Anyway, wish me luck on my prayer,Calathea plants. I do love the looks of them!🪴
