In this video we take the Sweet Bippie out for a Sea Trial. It's been a great project. Getting rid of the old gas engines and installing a pair of Cummins QSB 380's really brought this boat to life. The owner wanted us to keep as much of the original look as possible while restoring some of the rotten wood paneling, and modernizing the drive train, controls, and instrumentation. Enjoy!

I have the same boat with twin Yanmar 230hp and get 30knots and im under proped and the boat is very balanced. The Cummings must be very heavy or your props are way off. Im using almost half the fuel as well

How did you get Wayne Carini to come aboard?

That’s got to be a prop issue. Our 32 Blackfin weighs more like 18-20k with twin 375hp Cats and will top out at 30 knots. This boat should hit 35-40 knots with the right props. Or maybe the hull just isn’t meant for high speed. Bottom line is that the boat is set up perfectly and is plenty fast for 95% of sea conditions.

I think he said 14,009 lbs, two 380 hp engines you think would hit 40 but I guess the fly ridge is a brick in the wind. Sweet boat!!

He is under propped, on purpose. Could go faster but he is more interested in a happy cruise speed and room for weight.
@osu3221

@@SeaboardMarineIncVideos I gotcha, so would under propped mean a larger prop? The whole prop thing screws me up, or does it mean more pitch to push more water for torque? What kind of gear set? I'm curious I like that boat, I didn't realize it was a Chris craft hunt design, I love that boat, she looks very sturdy.

@@osu3221 Under propped means smaller diameter and/or less pitch. Equals less load on engines, but at the price of top speed and fuel efficiency when light loaded. Like running in 4th gear in a car with a 5 speed manual.

So slightly under propped which is good .

Great video, thank you. I am not sure if under propped is that good. I calculated fuel consumption for this boat, 1.1 nmpg @ 25 knots for a 14k lb boat. I am running a Riva 48 Superamerica, re-engined with 450 Diamonds. Max speed is 30 knots like this boat, idle is 6 knots and it does 23 knots @ 0.8 nmpg for a 37k lb boat. I thought the lighter boat should be way more efficient.

I am not the least bit surprised that a longer boat would be more fuel efficient. In this case it has nothing to do with being conservatively propped and everything to do with the vessel dynamics. This is about as short as a boat can get for a twin engine diesel, and he needs trim tabs to keep the boat level. This boat is short and stout, not a recipe for the best efficiency.

I sure miss the old days when sbmar would have links to their repowers on their website. A lot of detail and always interesting. Now we get seen one, seen them all videos that don't show much and have obnoxious music.

Well thanks for that.. did you see the rest of the videos on this boat? I assure you there is way more detail on these videos than what we used to put on the website. There is like 40-50 minutes of content all about this boat. As far as the music, sorry, thats a track from my old metal band. Hey we arent metallica or anything, but I think its decent enough and we cant use metallica because of copyright and such. Sorry you don't like it. You don't have to watch.

Curious question, you guys seem to have a pretty large operation. Do you come across many steel boats? I'm eye oogling and googling a Kasten marine design 38. It's a tug design, heavy boat but a full displacement and something I have the skill and room to build right now. I'm a Lincoln taught welder and fabricator in Cleveland Ohio. So this Kasten designed tug is a full displacement hull, he states 70 HP Inboard diesel will run is at hull speed, I guess 8.5 knots which is fine by me I'm not much into speed anymore, I like to sit back and enjoy the scenery. What are the advantages of you know of any of just tossing something more powerful like a 180-200 Deere? I'm just looking for any type of know how where maybe I'm thinking wrong and not seeing the full picture. I'll be moreso and most likely along the great lakes that can get the confused steep close waves, wouldn't more torque be of a benefit while trudging through some nasty chop? I ask questions sometimes but most guys are on the coasts and they have no clue how nasty these lakes can get on the 4th coast.

At 25kt/2400rpm is that 11.5 gph total or each engine?
