California has four main production areas for the popular fresh vegetable sweet corn. There are the southern desert valleys (Riverside and Imperial counties), the south coast (San Diego, Orange and Santa Barbara counties), the Central Valley (Contra Costa, San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Merced, Madera and Fresno counties), and the central coast (San Benito, Santa Clara and Alameda counties). In addition to these areas, most counties produce some sweet corn for direct marketing at roadside stands and farmers markets.
This video shows the nitty gritty details of how sweet corn is grown, harvested, handled and marketed in California. This video is dedicated to Dr. Mahlon Hile, professor emeritus at Fresno State, who started the sweet corn enterprise management program back in the 1980s and who has had a remarkable impact on thousands of Fresno State students over the years.

Kallstrom Sweet Corn here in Ephrata , Washington , loved the video . We mostly direct market our corn out of 1 ton trucks with huge signs on top with a corn planter on top of trucks , a real attention getter .

I used to live in Brentwood, CA back in the 90s, and my neighborhood backed up to the orchards and corn fields. We used to eat fresh sweet corn all the time it was the best corn I have ever had! When I went back to visit, all that farm-field was suburban sprawl :(

In the Texas Panhandle we plant sweet corn into wheat or cotton stubble. No till. sometimes striptill. Why so much tillage?

Very important, use chisel plow forks at least 25 inches and two passes in cross to descompact soil, calibrate the corn planter, fertilizer should be 2.5 inches below the grain and 2.5 inches aside, plant at no more fast than 4 miles /h and set tractor at 2,000 rpm very important no more no less is ideal rpm for vacuum planter Treat seeds with a good seed treatment for root development migh be genesis Ag, revita N remember corn rows defines a v5 stage and corn defines number of grains at V10 stage and is important to give the plant a good nutrition at this stage, use 30 pounds of boron to help polinizing remember California is dry and hot also producers use sugar in every application it helps in heat and drought stress, and potassium helps in drought conditions stress in corn Thank you

They have machinery that can pick sweet corn, this farmer is living in the stone age. Modern machinery is the answer.

@@hikurukutai most large farming operations have gone to machinery because of the speed in harvesting crops, only small operations hand pick crops. My uncle used migrant workers back in the 60's to pick cucumbers by hand but his children use machines. He had to furnish housing and other things. Machines never come in late or call in sick or need to leave early and soon cost is cheaper than physical labor.
