This is amazing. You can learn a lot about rock piano from the way he plays. It's not as simple as some people think.

You're right. Many classical pianists think that rock ballads are 3/4 chord nonsense but then when in front of the score they can't keep up with time and rhythm.

Billy was amazing. The things he could do to dress up three simple chords were the icing on the cake for this incredible band. Not repetitive, but arranged perfectly to go with the other players in the band. Isolating the piano track makes you realize what a genius he really was.

Met this awesome man years ago. I was in awe of his presents. I ask if I could just touch his talented hands. He was so flattered he kissed my hands. He then told me he had never met someone that asked him that and was most flattered. Oh man, I was the flattered one.❤💋

Such a tasteful method of inserting piano between three guitars. There isn't a lot of room. Billy Powell filled the spaces perfectly.

His piano was without a doubt the final ingredient to make this band what it was. His piano is just as powerful a part of their sound as the 3 lead guitar attack. Without him, it was not the same band. I never saw the original band but I did see them one time with Gary, Leon, Billy, Artimus and Ed King. Also saw them with 3 original members,Gary,Leon and Billy and although they were missing Allen Collins,Ronnie, Artimus ,Steve ,Cassie and Ed King it was still really something to see. They sounded flawless, literally played the tunes note for note. Ricky Medlock did a hell of a job playing Allen Collins parts. I could only imagine what it was like seeing the original lineup. I saw half the original lineup in the late 90s and I was amazed how good they still were. It's a tragedy what happened to these guys, especially Allen Collins, he never recovered from the crash and then losing his wife and child was the end for him. So 😢 sad.

@@michaelstratton6701 no doubt my man.. even seeing just a part of that band you could see with out a doubt how awesome and talented they were. Saw various incarnations of Skynyrd over the past 35 years. From 5 members down to 3.. after Leon died I saw them one last time with Gary and Billy and it still was great but Leon had great feel and just was missing something. Without Billy the secret weapon of Skynyrd I refused to go anymore. Billy and his piano elevated skynyrd to their greatest heights.. he was one hell of a musician.

Thanks for this! As a life-long recording studio pianist, this made me smile :) Billy has solid time, is very even and consistent in his parts, plus he doesn't pummel the keys. I like that the piano is providing colorful harmonic overtones that enhance the guitars and help flesh out the overall mix.

Are you sure? Sounds just like the studio version to me including the end solo. Some bands/players do reproduce their parts and solos verbatim in concert (Rush and Journey I've noticed both seem to do this) but I wouldn't have thought Billy did. I'll take your word for it if you're sure!
@RandomPerson56789
@RandomPerson56789 Жыл бұрын
@@richforman @Richard Forman yep, I'm positive. For one, according to Ed King, the original masters for the studio version were lost long ago, but also there are a few differences here & there in how Billy played this performance - easiest one to hear is that he starts the piano solo up an octave compared to where he plays on the studio version. Ronnie Van Zant was always very adamant about his band not improvising too much, so Billy always played parts very close to what was on the recording.
@RB-pm2ni

@@RB-pm2ni I saw an interview Ed King gave many years ago where he said Ronnie wanted to give the fans their money's worth and wanted the band to sound the same live as they did recorded and also sound the same live every time they played.This is the reason they rehearsed constantly at Hell house and their guitar solos were pre-written and rehearsed.In short,he did not want any surprises on stage during a gig......

These particular stems are ones I just found on a random site and it happened to be an old live performance. It comes already separated as flac or ogg files which you can open in programs like Audacity. I'm not sure how they typically get "leaked" since I don't think you can just take a full song and separate it into good sounding multitracks. It's just the audio that the mic recorded and somehow, maybe during the making of a live CD or remastering, it was leaked to the internet, I believe. Let me know if you want to know more or if you have any other songs that you would like to hear like this.
