You really owe it to yourself to listen to the original studio track. It was performed by a studio singer by the name of Clare Torey. She was asked to vocalize without using any words, to interpret transitioning from life to death. If memory serves me correctly, she did 3 takes and they edited the final version. It is breathtaking! #DaRealADogg

Dark Side of the Moon is an absolute masterpiece. Greatest album ever recorded - And this coming from someone who loves Pink Floyd - but objectively not my #1 favorite band all time - maybe 5th favorite - but I confidently say this is the greatest album ever cover to cover. You owe it to yourself to listen to it - headphones - no distractions - dim room and just let the music take you where you go - your reaction to this video shows you are the type of person that can be truly moved by phenomenal music; and that's what this album is.

Yes! This is the church choir version. The Clare Torry (Torre?) version of the original album after multiple takes was the 1960's style "acid rock" soothing and calming one's metaphysical mind into peace and tranquility as some of the other songs on Pink Floyd albums do. I think with Allen Parcen's project input of Clare Torry into Pink Floyd inspired their later entire space or future dreamy album "I Robot!" Played and orchestral Pink Floyd into Allan Parson's "I Robot" is more away from Pink Floyd's "heavy in heavy metal's" other music style orchestrated in their 1977 Animals and 1979 The Wall albums that pleasantly but with hard rock sounds satisfy a musical experience over the entire time of playing the albums.

I'm not arguing with anyone about anything but I saw an interview with Claire years ago and this solo was just a call in gig for her to make some money. She showed up, Roger and David gave her some rough parameters, played her the demo and told her to run with it. She did it in one take but the boys wanted her to do another take which she did but they ended up using the original anyway. No facing death or any of that other stuff from either her or the band. I think that's probably just some bullshit posted by someone who wants to sound important. Regardless, an OUTSTANDING performance nonetheless! One take, no autotune, no rehearsing ad nauseum, etc, etc.... Absolute pro!

@@dr.thrashfinger4915 Clare Torey actually did three takes. The first was rejected because she used words, which the band did not want. Clare cut off the third take mid song, saying she thought they had what they needed. She did not know anything about The Dark Side Of The Moon recording sessions. I don't think she even knew who Pink Floyd even was.

Without reading all 825 comments, because.... not my reaction video: The story behind the original recording is one of absolute wonder and amazement at what can be accomplished with talent and timing. The singer came into the studio on a contract gig, with only a general concept of what kind of vocal contribution was needed. After a brief conversation with band members and studio sound check, Clare Torrey launched into the stunningly emotional and evocative inspiration for what is done in this version by not one, but THREE singers. they were great, (and I went to a Pulse tour concert) but still, any attempt will fall short of the original. I read that the band members were absolutely dumbstruck by what they had just recorded in the studio. Clare was of course paid for her SINGLE TAKE. She left the studio, wondering if she would get a call-back for revisions, corrections, editing. But no... Her fantastic interpretation and rendition was placed on the Dark Side Of The Moon album, in it's entirety, and just as she had expressed it. A miracle, a classic, a masterpiece in translation of psyche to human voice. "Extraordinary" doesn't say enough.

And to think that Clare Torrey did the original vocals 50 years ago was as much mind boggling then as it is today. I heard somewhere she was paid a mere $75 for her work and years later attempted to sue the band for the unexpected success of this song, and was sadly unsuccessful in her law suit.

The singer of the original version is called Clare Torry and she was contacted to record the song without using words but only by vocalizing. In an interview Clare stated that not even Pink Floyd had any idea how she was supposed to sing, so she decided to improvise in her own way. In 2004, Torry sued both Pink Floyd and EMI for missing royalties owed to the album The Dark Side of the Moon, claiming he also contributed artistically to the song The Great Gig in the Sky (originally attributed only to Richard Wright). In early 2005, the British High Court of Justice recognized the singer's reasons as valid and declared her co-owner of the song's copyright. All records released after 2005 therefore regularly report Torry/Wright as the songwriters. Clare is also very proud that she sang the whole song on her own, while in subsequent performances she was sung by three different singers. PS Dear Pink Floyd I love you madly, but Clare is right. ;)

Pink Floyd is ABSOLUTELY worth listening to pretty much everything they’ve made. I do still recommend listening to the original version of this song as well, it’s just as impactful and so deep! It goes with the theme of that album so well which is essentially about different stages of life. This song was said to be about someone fighting to let go and cross to the other side and then accepting that it was their time. So incredible and art at its finest is what Pink Floyd is. The fact they can draw out so much thought and emotion at the same time is so beautiful.

As others have said (more or less): as much as you like this, the original from the Dark Side of the Moon album, will freakin’ blow you away. I’m not criticizing you for choosing this version - it was very good - I’m just saying when you download this for your own collection, add it to your playlist, or what ever - you want the original studio version. Imagine, it took two great female vocalists, who probably rehearsed for weeks, topull off what Claire Torry pulled off, with no advance preparation, in TWO takes. They asked her to do a third and she told them she had given them her best, and man was she right. After they told her to make her voice sound like an instrument, she left later to silence, thinking she did not get ‘the job’ of appearing on the album. She later learned they were too stunned to speak. Ms Torry did not know her vocal made it onto the album until the album was in stores. Thank you so much for tackling this tune. I really enjoyed your entire reaction! Sooner or later you;re going to want to listen to the entire album, in order, with lyrics in hand. After that you may be so stunned you will need a couple weeks off :)

Sam Brown was a highly underrated singer that deserved more success than she had, I am biased though, I thought she was gorgeous when "Stop" came out. She was also a great character, she came to Australia and was on Hey Hey its Saturday and was constantly cracking jokes, good ones too. Her impersonation of a cat from the rear had everyone in tears.

I applaud your choice. The Division Bell Tour was Amazing, also. I saw the Opening Night Show, for The World Tour, in Miami......Wow!! P.s. my son was conceived after the Learning to Fly Tour, in 1987........ Enjoy, any version available of the G.G.I.T.S. Pink Floyd was the most Amazing EVER. Waters tours this Summer. Sam Brown is singing. She is the daughter of one of the UK top pop personalities from the late 50s/early 60s, Joe Brown, and he mum was Vicki Brown, a session singer with credits including David Gilmour, Roger Waters, the Kinks, Manfred Mann, Elton John, Bryan Ferry etc. Sam's own solo career included the massive hit 'Stop' (linked below). She and her father appeared in the 'Concert for George', with her singing George Harrison's 'Horse to Water'. She also sang with Deep Purple's Jon Lord, Spandau Ballet, Gary Moore etc. and was a member of (former Squeeze member) Jools Holland's R&B Orchestra, which serves as the house band for the TV programme 'Jools Holland...Later'. Sadly, a botched operation on her vocal cords left Ms. Brown unable to sing. So she formed a ukulele orchestra an runs several club for players of that instrument. Check out her other videos on KZfaq. Some wonderful stuff. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pLuKpbKgxMqle4k.html

As good as this is, the studio version that’s on the album, sung by Clare Torrey is brilliant, singing the five stages of death without a word! Getting this album in 1973 and hearing this song for the first time, I was crying!! I wore the grooves out playing this whole album repeatedly!! Go down the hole and listen from beginning to end, all Pink Floyd records are meant to be listened to front to back. ☮️❤️

Pink Floyd has been my favourite band since I was 11 years old, and got 'The Wall' on vinyl, for Christmas. That was in 1979, saw them in concert a bunch of times, without Roger Waters, unfortunately. You should also check out the original studio version of this song. The vocalist on that, Clare Torry, did it in 2 takes. In the first take, she used a word, and the band wanted her to try again without any words, the second take is what you just experienced. She was later given a writing credit and an undisclosed sum in a out-of-court settlement with the band, since she hadn't been paid much for the original performance, (50 British pounds, maybe). Personally, I think the studio-version is just so much cleaner than the live ones, and most of the live performances aren't with Clare Torry. She brought a special magic to it. Another of my favourite Pink Floyd songs that has no actual words, is "Obsured by Clouds", an instrumental, off the album of the same name, which preceded 'Dark Side of the Moon'. Other notable songs off that album, "Wots... uh, the Deal", "Stay", and "Free Four". You try and stay out of trouble :) Mark

this song is the "softly spoken magic spell" of the previous song; a transition from birth to death. And while this version is excellent, it doesn't hold a candle to the original... Now if ya want freaky, there are "several species of small furry animals gathered in a cave and grooving with a pict." also by Pink Floyd

I have a different take on this song, I believe she is singing all of life, from her own birth, to giving birth, to death. And of course, as good as this is, you should also listen to the studio version, which was performed by just one woman, who gave a performance that really can not be repeated as it was completely spontaneous.
