Jewel is interesting; she was born and raised in Alaska on the frontier, was homeless in a van for years while living in San Diego, playing coffee shops, and in the mid 90s, she became famous. Very intelligent and articulate in interviews.

I met Jewel in Milwaukee in 1996 when she opened for the Psychedelic Furs, which was a bizarre pairing but confirmed my long-held belief to "NEVER skip the Opening Act!" She signed her debut CD for me "Jewel Kilcher" her full name and she doodled a nude fairy with wings on the CD cover. That is a keepsake I still possess. Jewel is wonderful.

As noted, Jewel goes on the "you think that's my stage name, but it's just my name" team. Along with Ms. Kilcher we have: Madonna (Ciccone) Prince (Nelson) Usher (Raymond IV) Sia (Furler) Some pretty creative parents out there, apparently.

Jewel is another free-spirited, pure hippie soul. Her hits "Foolish Games" & "Who Will Save Your Soul" should def be the next Jewel songs on your Female Friday list. I would also suggest you check out her songs "Intuition", "Down So Long", "Stand", "Again & Again", "Hands". & "Chime Bells" (if you want to really hear her yodel). Her music is the perfect soundtrack to drink coffee to on a rainy Sunday morning.

She has a great story; she was homeless and turned down a multi-million dollar deal. Record companies started bidding like crazy to sign her and rather than take a big up front deal, she signed a deal based on the back end sales. She became really wealthy as a result. She ruled the 90s. Another one of her songs was "Foolish Games" which was a monster hit. You'll really love that one too. More recently, I remember her doing a funny prank at a karaoke in Santa Monica where she sung this song and "Foolish Games." She disguised herself. You should react to "Foolish Games" and the prank video as well. I know you'll love both.

I love Jewel. She's probably one of the most down to earth people around. She was raised on a homestead in Alaska. I think she recently moved back to Alaska with her son. I really enjoy her music. Her voice is beautiful. And she can yodal.

I also think it was the golden era for R&B girl groups, boy bands, hip hop, and R&B in general. While I would still rank the 80s and 70s ahead of it, the 90s are underrated when it comes to music. Btw you are dead right about the female singer/songwriters of the 90s. Others who come to mind are Paula Cole, Sophie B Hawkins, Alanis Morrissette, Melissa Etheridge, Sheryl Crow and Sara McLachlan.

I think Stay by Lisa Loeb would be a good one too. She often gets pegged as a one hit wonder but she had a few other hits at the time: Do You Sleep and Taffy. But Stay is essential 90s and has a great story behind it. She was the first unsigned artist to hit #1.

If you've ever heard of the reality show "Alaska: The Last Frontier," its all about the life of the Kilcher family on a homestead in Alaska. Jewel is the daughter of Atz Kilcher, one of the main stars of the show. He's also a local musician and Jewel grew up singing (and yodeling) with him. She's the one playing that acoustic, too.

Wow, I didn't realize you hadn't done any JEWEL yet. She's a true artist. Her story is actually amazing, since she was discovered when she was homeless living in her car on the streets. Her voice is so unique and so real. She plays several instruments and writes and composes her own music. I wish you had played an official video because she looks like an angel too. I had the biggest crush on her for so long. You need to do her other songs like FOOLISH GAMES and WHO WILL SAVE YOUR SOUL She still sounds just as good as the day I first heard her.

Still brilliant after all these years…and she just won the most recent season of “The Masked Singer”. Both Jewel and the prior winner Leann Rimes…hit huge early in their careers and have been around for many years…and BOTH are actually very talented “yodelers”. Very similar voices and vocal abilities as well.🙂👍🏻🧨 I saw Jewel perform live about 6 years ago in Millennium Park in Chicago…fabulous live performer.

I believe they mentioned recently that they reacted to a Carole King song (and loved it) but the video got blocked. It's unfortunate that copyright holders don't recognize music reaction channels as promotion (like radio) but that's the current state of things. Anyway, I imagine their Carole King reaction will either show up ~30 days after they recorded it (once J&A have jumped through all KZfaq's hoops) or, if it was a full-on strike, not at all.

I'm a fan ofJewel, I'm from Romania (Europe), I got lucky with her first single "Who will save your soul" that was picked up on a local radio station, and from that moment on I will forever be in love of her voice and her music. "Morning Song" - is from her first album - it still remains, over so many incredible hits, one of my all-time favorites of hers.

I saw her in concert - super talented musician as well as vocalist. She also did yodel - and until you hear someone yodel with a voice like hers you can’t imagine the sheer talent. Took me a minute to learn to appreciate her, but boy did I learn!

Hmmm, Spiderman, the Hulk, Jewel and you. Sounds great. 😃 Which one are you? Or are you trying to be incognito? 🥸 I saw Jewel in a Hallmark Mystery series called "Fixer Upper Mysteries" where she plays a carpenter/contractor who solves crimes. Interesting show, and you're right, she can act.

I love that movie! Book written by the same author as Winter’s Bone. I used to live near where each of the two films were made!

@@jackgilchrist Yes! They were all young back then ‘98. The movie made History Channel’s historical movie award when it came out in ‘99. Some others you’ll recognize too! I was an extra riding my horse, but can be seen really good twice. Some of my friends, as well. No one special, really, just had a great time on set for two weeks. Yes, she is pretty rounded person! Thanks!!

@@IronCavalier Thanks, I am definitely gonna have to see that. Unless I did already and forgot... it happens when you get old. Then I'll just have to see it again. 🙂 An extra, huh? That sounds like a blast, and getting to do it riding a horse is even better. I always wanted to be an extra, never in the right place I guess. I should have hung out in Astoria, OR more. I'm not far from there and maybe I could have been in The Goonies or something. You may not have starred in the movie, but don't sell yourself too short. After all, without the extras, crew, stunt folks, animal handlers, armorers, etc., the movies wouldn't get made and the stars wouldn't be able to shine.

You described her voice perfectly. If you listen to some of jewels, live performances, you might hear a yodel or two… She’s quite gifted.

I never paid much attention to Jewel when she first came on the scene, as I wasn't really into that style of music at that time. But when I heard her first Christmas album, I was absolutely FLOORED! Her version of Ave Maria is my absolute favorite, because her voice is like a crystal bell -- complete perfection! (It would make for a wonderful Christmas reaction!) Then, when I saw her on The Masked Singer last year, I was blown away, and I realized that her talents go WAY beyond the folk/indie/pop genre that I'd been categorizing her in.

"Who Will Save Your Soul" is her breakout song and possibly her best work. Such a gifted song-writer and singer. Interesting you mentioned "yodel" because she's very skilled at it.

okay, i cried watching y’all listen to jewel. she was so important to me in high school, and her voice is absolutely ethereal. i was lucky enough to see her in concert in ‘99, and she is phenomenal live. she’s an amazing person who had a tough life for a long while, but she made it. i love her so very much. ♥️ jewel recs: foolish games (single version), hands, kiss the flame, little bird (a song she sings with her mom that will transport you).

Jewel! She became a darling in the 90s with her debut album, which featured this song and "Who Will Save Your Soul". And she never stopped. :) Other great tunes to check out are "Hands", "Foolish Games", "Down So Long" and "Intuition". The pride of Homer, Alaska (where she was raised)!

Interesting you should mention yodeling, Amber, she is an excellent yodeler! She plays the guitar and wrote her own songs. Great poet, too…has had poems published, I believe.

Nobody does reactions to Jewel. I watched her since I got her first single on a two-sided cassette tape (free in a caboodles). I was like 19. I am 45 now. This girl has always been major major talented. She is a poet, song writer, author, singer, and actress. So happy my two favorite react people reacted to my all time favorite artist. Love and hugs all around.
