A small game called “Filler” has the same theme and also has pretty artwork (except the character cards) and is very similar to this but streamlined, quick and fun.

We have been waiting for 5 years for this. I figured this money was lost and I learned my lesson. I'll be very happy if it does show up.

Day 1 backer, play tester, and critique giver. Unfortunately in order to save the game they decided to change so much of it that the only thing that remained was the trays and chips. 1. The original action selection was still unrepeatable however you had to take ingredient’s a certain way. For ex, one was take 2 from 2, another take 1 from the 4 around the target bowl, take all from 1 bowl. This was determined to be too hard of a decision for their new target audience and thus streamlined to what it is. 2. The variable powers, tools, and rewards were mostly modular originally. Now they are incorporated to (again) make things easier for their new target audience. 3. Reserving wasn’t a thing, originally you had to race to grab recopies before your opponents. That was deemed too confrontational and changed. 4. I dont think leftovers was a thing, so it just justified their new 3rd action and another way to give everyone a chance to get exactly what they want every turn as opposed to originally adapting to “the mess” being created by everyone else. Also the reason the tray system is the way it is was because originally you had to really think about what action you chose vs whats out in the bowls vs what you can actually store and these 3 puzzles was the strategy of the game. 4. The prepping along the bottom of the tray, it was originally a “timer”. It caused confusion as “baking” so it was changed to “time spent working on it” but the rewards only paid out if you gambled taking longer and got better rewards when it did. Now you just get something immediately for taking longer or whatever. Before a low scoring card could get bonuses for extra ingredients and extra time. But someone could end the game and you wasted that time, which causes hurt feelings and again it was changed. 5. The wild ingredient was always there, but they changed all the recipes to include the bland gray wild parts so every recipe is easy to make. It used to be, this takes XYZ, and if you include extra XYZs it was worth more and/or how you got the mastery chits, now “jars” which gave discounts. So all this is to say this was originally a very thinky puzzley racing combo-y dynamic with lots of modules to customize the difficulty and challenge, but bcs they took over, and tbh paid to do so, they’re entitled to do what they want atp, but it was all to make it a feel good family weight game bcs thats their plan to recoup their investment. Imo they diluted the concept and made things more convoluted in an effort to reach a broader audience. Maybe someone will recover the original action selection system and ditch the ribbons in lue of judges expansion were still due, along with halloween and xmas recipe expansions. How many of us that remember how it was, or care enough to put it all back is probably too few, but maybe a file will show up on bgg one day. And there is/was a discord the devs used for this game and some of us told them this was the exact review they were gonna get with their changes, but again, better to get any game than no game.

An original game turn for example was like “what pick action can I take to get me closer to this recipe before someone else, and if i cant take the action i want bcs i cant repeat it then what pick action can i take that causes chaos for everyone else?” Additionally if the recipe i want is now gone, how can I spend what im left with to either pivot to something else OR make what i working on “better” for more point to make up for the points i “lost” out on. I need to cash these chips out to make room for more chips bcs im limited to 3 storage patterns. Thematically the chef is struggling to stay organized amongst all the chaos bcs the competition all share the same resources and the game clock is ticking down. Come to think of it, there was a kart off to the side btwn the jars and the trays where up to 4 of your leftovers went with no restrictions, but they just made the leftovers universal and stay out on the table. The tools let you “alchemy” and manipulate your ingredients but you had to spend your baking points (coins) to do so, which was the win condition, most points/coins after like 4-7 recipes or whatever. But you could still win with fewer recipes bcs you may not have spent any coins or spruced up your fewer recipes etc. Idk the player interaction is cut way way down and the decision space is much less consequential.

Hi, this is Yoma. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the game. As far as I understand, you are a playtester of the previous version, and I guess we don't know each other, right? For those who may not know, I was one of the co-designers of the original game and the artist of it. I really wished that the first version was so good that we could just release it as is and not do any extra work. Unfortunately, we had some serious problems with the things you mention here, and we saw this as an opportunity to fix them. To explain what I mean, please allow me to list the reasons behind these changes: 1) The previous storage system was much more restrictive and punitive. In many cases while targeting an difficult recipe with many ingredients, you were literally stuck and had to "clean your bench" to get new ingredients, meaning you had to discard some of your chips to get nothing back. This, combined with only 4 available recipes and the lack of gray ingredients, created an unfortunate experience where a player would start collecting ingredients for a specific recipe (spending 2-3 turns), only to be scored by another player along the way, leaving them with a full bench of resources they couldn't use. Also, changing strategy to target a new recipe was nearly impossible. You would have to discard ingredients to make room, and spend a few more turns to take new ingredients. Fun fact, while you were doing the above, the second recipe you were targeting could also be taken! These things are facts that happened during the playtests, and the player who experienced them wouldn't have a good time. 2)The tools were always available to you, so before you started the game you had to check all of their actions to be ready to activate any of them by spending coins. This caused a lot of downtime for players and a higher learning curve. Chef abilities were optional, which seemed like a missed opportunity for the Baking competition theme of this game to not be represented by a chef character. Lastly, there were no awards in the game at all, which made the final scoring pretty straightforward, with no dilemmas. 3) You mentioned that there was no reserve in the old version, but there was. There was an open tool you could use to reserve a recipe. The actual rules were "Reserve a recipe card and place it partially under your player tray. You can bake it during any of your turns during the game." We felt that this rule was pretty basic, so we tried to give players a twist by using this reserved recipe to get an immediate bench benefit, but at the same time strategize the specific time it takes to complete it. 4) Leftovers were created for two reasons. As a coin generator and as a source of ingredients that doesn't make a mess and therefore doesn't help other players. We understand that it might feel undervalued at first, but I would argue that it is not weak, but conditional. Regarding the tray system and the old picking actions, you were basically doing the same thing with 4 different variations. 1. Pick ingredients and make a mess 2. Take ingredients and make a double mess 3. Swap an ingredient from a neighboring bowl, then take ingredients and make a mess 4) Finally, pick 2 ingredients from 2 different bowls without making a mess, and it was mandatory to use them all (one per turn) in any order you wanted before they all recharged again. That felt pretty much the same, so we basically kept a basic pick ingredient action and tried to add more interesting action choices for players during their turn. 5) Regarding the timer, you did a good job of describing the problems with it. Baking isn't for all recipes (thematically, some don't need to go in the oven), so it's now prep time. Giving players the option to decide how much time they want to spend preparing a dessert feels much more rewarding and adds to the momentum of the game, rather than using fixed timers for each recipe that only gives you their rewards once they are prepared. 6) I explained how punishing making recipes used to be in Note 1. Having only 4 recipes available at all times, with no gray ingredients, caused a lot of unhappy moments when someone could easily reserve the recipe you wanted just to block you. I don't agree with the statement that the only things that are similar to the old version are the chips and the trays. We tried really hard to stay true to the aesthetics of the old version and be sure that if we had no restrictions, we would change even more things. That was the hardest thing for us. Keeping the balance between what was there and the new elements we wanted to implement. Sometimes it's just easier to build a new house than to renovate an old one. Even if the old version was somehow proven to be worse than the current one, some people might still be more emotionally attached to it without giving the new one a chance. I can sympathize with those feelings, but I would encourage those who have commented here that they will sell it without even trying it to give it a try and decide for themselves if they like it or not. Overall, we still believe that the version we will deliver to backers is much more fun, and enjoyable. The previous version would probably not get a Seal of Approval, and we are very happy that Tom enjoyed it so much. We really appreciated Chris and Wendy's comments, and overall we thought for a moment that they were enjoying the game more. Wearing my designer's hat, I personally just wish that their scores were closer to 7, as some of their criticisms are debatable in my humble opinion, but it is what it is :) The bottom line is that any productive criticism is appreciated, and we are eager for the backer to get their game on the table and start sharing their "sweet" thoughts about it!

I see some of the complaints, but as someone that has played quite a few times I think some of the rules are useful. The restrictions in your supply make it so later in the game you often CAN'T take all of the ingredients from the bowl you want. It creates some think y moments. The tools are powerful, being able to use them the turn you got them would have created an imbalance. The reserve token is an odd one because I've never seen it played, giving up a tool card is a big deal, BUT I can see that there are last turns situations wh where I could see you would want to reserve one, but often you just take the risk unless you have a tool card that isn't going to get played. I would rate it at a 7.5. I like to play it a lot and my complaints are different. It think it's fiddly to figure out how to pay for some of the lvl 2 recipes and have to tell the other players not to remove their ingredients until they are ready because you need to put them back in the SAME place if you decide NOT to complete that recipe.

@fantasiaboardgames808 8 ай бұрын
Hi there. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. A nice way to mitigate the effect you explain in your complain, is that whenever you are about to prepare a recipe, place the ingredients on the table above your player tray, aligned with each of the slot you picked them from. This way if you ever make a mistake, you can easily place them back in the correct slots of your player tray.

I backed this way back in 2018 lol. Still haven’t got it. Anyhow I’m wondering now five years later how much I’m gonna enjoy it. I know Fantasia changed some of the gameplay rules from the original but it seems like it might be similar ultimately to Chai or Steam Up as a basic get stuff and fulfill contracts game. I love the theme though and will likely keep it for that reason.

I backed this on KS, and glad Fantasia picked it up after the JASON debacle. But then Yoma tampered with the original rules just to pleased some licensor that want to give more funds so that the game can be made reality. I have playtested once in TTS with earlier version of their revised rules, but then the final version of revised rules that they choose with, did not pleased me at all. I just watched the how to play video from Meeple University, and right there right then, I knew the rules is too complicated for what simple of game this is. So, yeah, after I get my Deluxe Game, I will sell it rightaway I think, prefer playing other games rather than games that has changed very much from hat I previously promised.

I just cried ice-cream tears! :-( This was one of the biggest hidden gems of the convention! I didn't expect this to be great but when I gathered it was like a meatier Splendor, I got more intrigued (as Splendor is a staple gateway game for me, so i guess that helps). But I tried and demoed games at Essen once each but Sweet Mess I've played 4 times already, 3 of which were at Essen as I taught it twice straight after buying it in the evenings. I know you don't mention value at all, but 50 euros for this game was a bargain for the components and 10 Euros for a really good playmat. Didn't find it fiddly at all, I mean you just "make a mess" clockwise and flip the plate. The Yi's have played WAY more fiddly games in the beige Euro category than this. 😜 Actually I was quite surprised they reviewed it, I figured this kind of game would be more up Zee's and Camilla's wheelhouse? I do agree though, the storage of the tokens doesn't have as big of an impact as it could do, but I wouldn't house rule it out - it's easy to teach, and there aren't many rules in the game anyway. As for the side tokens, they are actually good to take if they match what you need and if you want the coin also, plus it's better to get the chips you actually need rather than just grab 4 chips for the sake of it. Plus you don't "make a mess" when you take chips from the side, so you're not repopulating plates for the benefit of others - this does get forgotten sometimes though with new players. The action selector mechanic is essential though - you have to have it so that you can't do tools, oven or preparation actions consectively.

I don’t like the artwork and the overall look of it and I don’t like all the different trays. The deserts should have been much larger pictures and the ingredients more discernible as ingredients rather than just colors. It looks like a weirdly convoluted version of Kanagawa, (which is not stuffed with extra rules) but way less pretty.
