Sweet Potato Pie 🥧 Like Pumpkin Pie.... But BETTER! 🎃

3 жыл бұрынToday we make one of my favourite fall treats.... with a twist. Pumpkin pie is awesome, but we wanted to use an ingredient we all know and love... SWEET POTATOES!

Recipe:
Pie Filling
2 Cups of roasted Sweet Potato (peeled)
1/2 Coconut Sugar (or other dry sugar - use more for a sweeter pie)
1/2 Cup Full Fat canned Coconut Milk
2 Tbsp Ground Flax mixed with 5 Tbsp Water
2 Tsp Pumpkin Spice (add more if you want!)
Pie Crust
1.5 Cups of Oats
1/2 Cup Pecans
2.5 Tbsp Maple Syrup
1.5 Tbsp Coconut Milk (from the same can used for the pie filling)
1/4 Tsp Salt
Method
Combine all the pie filling ingredients into a blender or food processor until smooth.
Combine all the ingredients for the pie crust into a food processor and blend until uniform and it sticks together.
Press into a 9" pie dish.
Add pie filling.
Cover edges with foil to prevent burning.
Bake at 350f for 45-50 minutes.
Allow to cool before serving.

Looks really Good! You know, carrots make a great "pumpkin pie" as well. I've used carrots in recipes calling for either yams/sweet potatoes and pumpkin and one cannot tell it's carrots. it's a great sub when don't have pumpkin or sweet potatoes, and somewhat less expensive and available all year round. When I make pumpkin pie, nowadays, I prefer using kabocha squash, aka, "Japanese pumpkin"; it's a very rich tasting pumpkin and makes fantastic pumpkin bread as well. The green skin is also edible; I make a pumpkin stew with it and leave the skin.

Joe Mclaughlin . I live in Hawaii and purple sweet potato pie is a regular item, all year round. I always buy one when mainland visitors come to visit. They may be hesitant until they take a bite, then it’s eyes wide open with OMG, this is the best pie I’ve ever eaten!

Sweet potato pie is usually THE pie on African American Thanksgiving dinner table when it comes to pumpkin vs sweet potato. I get that you guys used coconut milk instead of vegan butter in the batter, but where's the vanilla? Also, condensed coconut milk over full fat coconut milk gives you a texture more like traditional sweet potato pie. But if you never had it prior to becoming vegan, ya wouldn't know to want that. LOL It was so much fun watching you guys make this, and glad that you enjoyed getting into the sweet potato pie game.

I’m Canadian and live in Ontario, Sweet potato pie was not as common in my house but was in my husbands and many others have it for thanksgiving. Some people cover it with marshmallows but I think it’s sweet enough as it is . Has nothing to do with colour. This recipe looks wonderful and I will try it.

@@Simnettnutrition In the south, sweet potato casserole is traditionally covered with marshmallows or a pecan/brown sugar mixture). (My family tells me it's just a crustless sweet potato pie, though. ) Can't wait to try your version of the pie!

You should give it a try. I love them both, because other than the subtle flavor shift, the difference is the depth of the flavor. Pumpkin pie is a bit lighter. It's an excellent pie, especially once grandma gets her hands on the batter. You may end up real upset at yourself for missing out.

My girlfriend just made a really good pumpkin pie that set up perfectly and was actually fudgy with the texture. Her recipe was full fat coconut milk, canned pumpkin, tapioca flour. I just finished the rest of it for breakfast this morning. So good!

@@adorable3817 along with all processed oils. You cant avoid it unless you just dont eat anything processed. But in moderation😜 it's worth it for how good it makes the pie

@@_sacredseven_ good point 😅👍 The other oils do have saturated fat, like 8g and 40g ....coconut oil has 92g 😳🙈 My sister went Vegan, whole food plant based, and off oils - only exception is that she used coconut oil & coconut milk to cook, because she heard it was healthy. After 6 months she was diagnosed with high cholesterol. After ditching the coconut oil everything back to normal. I know. It's delicious 🥰 but just not worth it to me. I have sensitive bronchials and the potential to develop Asthma. Which is why I try to find delicious alternatives, rather than make an exception for which I will feel guilty afterward.

@@adorable3817 I'm in the same boat with Gluten right now. I know it's a hard to digest protien for me but my girlfriend makes the best sourdough bread and I love making veggie sandwiches with it. But I always feel guilty after eating the bread. Need to stick to the simple forms of the food. Oats and rice are my go to sources for carbs. I eat lots of honey, and hemp seeds too. But yeah I co8ld go without coconut milk for sure but I could NOT go without coconut water. It's my favorite thing to drink.

Preparing for American Thanksgiving and just made this for the 4th time with my son. We use pumpkins from our garden because we didn't have sweet potatoes (just added arrowroot powder) so good. I make double the crust because my son eats it as he helps me flatten it. Such a great recipe thanks Crystal! That pie crust is money

Pumpkins can sometimes be less sweet, sometimes more sweet it's just hiw it is. But when I tried a sweet potato for the first time I figured it tastes the same as a better tasting, sweeter pumpkin. You can't go wrong with them 🤓
