Hi there from North East England . I love your choice of colours! Colour work has always been my passion........not that I'm any good at it. And so couple of years ago I went to a workshop given by a very famous and very skilled professional knitter from Shetland. A delightful lady who could knit so fast and beautifully. The workshop was about steeking. Towards the end of the day as people were leaving someone asked how long the Knitter had been using steeking............., had she learned it as a child. I was amazed by the answer. She, the colourwork expert, rarely steeked. She said that she had been brought up to knit in one piece, flat. This was her own preferred method and she was not alone this. She said that although there was a great demand for steeking classes and demonstrations , her own work was either as a flat piece, as you were doing, or if a jumper then obviously in the round . That ,for me , was the lesson of the day, I've never steeked since.

There is a reason you feel like an expert knitting this... you ARE an expert knitting this. I have personally not gotten beyond advanced beginner using size 6 needles knitting a slouch hat in DK and a provisional cast on. Watching you go from Western to Continental without thinking kinda blows my mind. I hope I can get to this level before I get to 80 (currently 61). You’re really not an imposter although that thought gets stuck in many of us. Live in your awareness and confidence of your expertise! Your excitement is wonderful and catching. Thank you!

Color work has been my favorite thing in knitting for 40 years! I really prefer to work color work in the round with yarn in both hands. I think I would have chosen to knit this sweater in the round using steeks for both the center front and the armholes. I could then either pick up stitches and work the sleeves down to the cuffs or knit the sleeves separately and insert them into the armholes by seaming. Lovely sweater however you knit it!

Felicia, your excitement about this stranded colorwork sweater is contagious! I learned stranded colorwork flat, and my first in the round experience was a pair of mittens. My stranding was so TIGHT that I had to give them to my little grand-daughter because I couldnt fit my hand in there! However, that experience behind me, I do now prefer to do stranded colorwork in the round. I did make A Mowry’s Throwback flat though!

You don't have to knit back and forth above the armholes. Most people that knit stranded sweaters in the round also steek the armholes, as well as the necklines. Makes life a lot easier. specially if you don't like purling in colourwork.

You can knit a fabric as wild as this here but only at the sleeves 2cm, at the hole for the head about 20cm and down 20cm again. The middle you can knit in one colour if you want. This way l use my left over colors all the times! And if you only have tiny yarn it's fine for the same at socks, e.g. . I've knit socks where every 4th row l had a new colour all over, nothing twice! Only the toe's part is the same right and left and it looks absolutely fantastic!

I enjoy colourwork knitting in the round and flat equally since I knit both left-handed and right-handed. If I’m knitting flat, I always have the right side facing me, so I never have to purl stranded knitting. It’s worth a try!

Thuy Linh Instead of turning it all around and purling, I just move the working yarn to the other hand and knit back since a purl stitch is just a knit stitch when seen from the other side. If you’re at all ambidextrous, it’s worth trying out. I’m left-handed, so always knit comfortably from left to right. The next row is then knit right to left as you would if you’re right handed. The next is again knit left to right and so on.

Considered steeking the armholes? The traditional way of Norwegian cardigans is knitting them in the round and then cutting them up, sleeveholes, neck and buttoning, before everybody got hooked on round yokes, I believe. Looks a bit funny for a v-neck. My first colourwork btw was a vest knitted flat in two pieces, a plain backside and pattern on the front, including some rows with three strands ... More than forty yrs ago, was my first real, big knit, only did mittens and dolls' clothes before that, took me more than a year to finish, like years, acrylics, and my gauge was so loose, that when I started on another, in the same size but another background colour, it was too small, I had grown since I measured for size, but my gauge had tightened a lot. I started with doing the stranded front pieces, because plain knitting was sooo boring, and the back actually took longer to finish than the front.

great show. I am a cable person. I have several sweaters in my queue because during these COVID times cables are easy for me. I make a lace sweater (Whitehorse my first Catlin Hunter) in DK weight. But my first Jennifer Steingass sweater that I was suppose to knit and Undermoth mittens are languishing. I have done some colorwork, though always in the round. I thought 2020 was my year for colorwork, but hopefully 2021 is. Yes I use both hands when I knit.

I am knitting. this. type sweaters from leftover yarn , mostly one section of the sweater, or sleepless cardigans, back and ribs in the main colour,than you can use your imagination for the patterns on the front, the challenge is tangling the yarn and you must be very careful vituperative joining different colours (few times I ended up with the holes),.Those sweaters are very warm ,since you have double yarn , thanks for the ideas about choosing the colors

It really... doesn't. At first it's torturous to understand, but once you understand the basics (and how to count rows/click a tally counter) it becomes remarkably simple. Do yourself a favor and knit up swatches of basic charts in small squares (look around on sites like Ravelry and you're bound to find some knitting charts). It takes a bit more time than plain knitting, but some practice first makes any project go faster, and I can now knit colorwork at close to my normal speed. Also, I recommend that you watch these two videos on intarsia and colorwork (which REALLY help with understanding colorwork, at least for me): kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e-B9eK9jqJ2peIE.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/opuonqtlrZ-rimw.html Then watch THIS if you're interested in knitting faster (teaches continental knitting, which helped me knit much faster, especially when it comes to purling): kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gtl2jcpjp9SUZnk.html Hope these help. :) PS: Just a tip for when you are working in intarsia... if you'd rather not have multiple balls of the same color when you're doing designs in the same color in multiple places, you can "carry" it along the back of the work. A good way to prevent it from messing with your tension or having to deal with super long floats is to throw the color you're "carrying" over the strand of yarn you're currently working with, the same way you would if you were twisting the yarn to add in a new color. You can also throw it in the opposite direction when doing this, to decrease tangling and twisting. That little trick saved me a LOT of time and effort on complex designs, and made the work thicker, though it does use up a bit more yarn.

I do a crazy thing, when I knit color work flat, I knit forward and back on the knit side. I taught myself to do it that way so I could always see the design. People that knit normally see me doing this they just shake their heads, because it's not normal. I also use the technique when I knit wrap anf turn. It works for me. Ive been doing this since college, when knit in public wasn't cool.

I love knitting colour work but am fairly new at it so I am sticking to smaller more manageable projects for now. I dream of making a sleeveless vest, the sort you wear over long sleeve t-shirts or blouses but I don’t yet have the courage to jump in. I will check out the book though, great recommendation!

Thank you for the video, I enjoy to watch 'how I knit" videos 😁 but makes me wonder, why do you have the colours that way around on your hand on the knit side? You could just hold the light colour on the left hand and the dark on your right hand and that way you could just knit and don't have to actually knit under the dark colour cause it would naturally be under 🤔 Love the way it looks and that double fingering looks super nice on colourwork, never thought that it would make a difference 🤭💕

Thanks so much Penny! Yes I think when you look at the whole thing it looks complicated... but I just take it one pattern section at a time and so I’m only ever concerned with two yarn colours. Makes it much easier to focus ☺️

I would love to do more color work but weaving in all those ends terrifies me. Back when I just started making wearables I didn’t know how to weave in ends with more slippery yarn and it was a horrible experience, since then I’m terrified of weaving in ends so I avoid anything with too many ends 😅

I love your tutorial. I am color blind. Do you have kits or patters with fewer colors. I’m afraid i would be so confused. I wonder if i could knit in color since i am color blind. Usually I’m knitting socks because they are very easy to carry. I would love to learn to knit a top down sweater. It would be fun for my husband. The book you recommended i will get on amazon. I know light and dark, stripe if colors are not same shade, etc. thank you for any recommendations. I found you accidentally, I’m so excited. I love to use magic loop needles, i have no straight needles. I feel it would be extremely fun but not nerve racking if i don’t have so many colors to label on charts and yarns. Can you speak to color dominance? I was taught to hold the dominant color in the left hand and the background color in the right as this ensures the dominant stitches are coming from below, thus being slightly larger. However, it appears that you carry your dominant color, the one coming from below, in the right hand. Is this just personal preference or have I been doing it wrong this whole time? Thank you!

I love this video! Can you please help us lever knitters out with colorwork? I learned how to lever knit using your tutorial, and now I have no idea how to proceed with holding the yarn to knit color work in this method! Do I need to learn continental and English to do color work? If so, alright, but oh boy! I never thought I’d pick up 3 knitting styles in my first year of knitting. I'm almost finished with the Throwback. I almost gave up when I discovered I had to purl the fair isle section using three yarns in one row! It's hard enough to carry three yarns on the knit side but on the purl side? Ugh. But I persevered. Altho, I have to admit I'd go to any length to never purl with three yarns in one row again!!! I'm considering the Wild Autumn Cardigan. Any three yarn rows? I checked out the Colorwork Bible from the Library and will definitely buy it. It's beautiful and enjoyable.

Hahah I feel you! I remember that row in the Throwback too! In the Wild Autumn, I did knit one row that is three colours, but the pattern is very flexible and you can just omit it and swap out for a different pattern. Thanks for watching!

Up in the vid. you can clidk at the 3 points which are one dnder the other. Click there an at the point speach fastness you put it into 0.50 or less. Then you can slow that downeand understand everything! It's how she is! She is fast in all: thinking, knitting, telling…
