This match is legendary since there is no more Santoro in today's world of male pro tennis. Hsieh su wei only stands out in WTA..!

What people dont realise who have never played is that Santoro was a very difficult player to face and frustraring to play against because he spun the ball so much frequently taking all the pace off the ball. Its very hard to play against because its very unlike most players games. Almost like that club player that you shouldnt lose to but do because you dont know how to predict what they will do next. I bet a lot of players dreaded facibg him

If santoro played in the 70s with wooden rackets he'd probably be considered an all-time great. His game isn't as effective with the modern equipment but he had so many great upsets of higher ranked players.

For those who cannot understand how he managed to win against Nole (and other No. 1 or top ten): even if Santoro never managed to be ranked in the top 10, he still won 2x AO in double and made 2x other GS finals in double at the French & Wimbledon. Not too bad for a "limited" player.

He has a cemetery for #1 players. Only a few of them could escape Santoro including Nadal Murray and Kafelnikov. In singles play, Santoro defeated 18 players who were ranked world no. 1 at some time during their careers: Novak Djokovic, Jimmy Connors, Mats Wilander, Boris Becker, Stefan Edberg, Jim Courier, Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras, Thomas Muster, Marcelo Ríos, Gustavo Kuerten, Carlos Moyá, Pat Rafter, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Marat Safin, Lleyton Hewitt, Andy Roddick, and Roger Federer (against whom he has a 2-9 record). Against other former world no. 1 players, Santoro is 0-6 against Yevgeny Kafelnikov, 0-1 against Ivan Lendl, 0-1 against Rafael Nadal, and 0-2 against Andy Murray. Santoro is famous for his winning record against Marat Safin (7-2); Safin himself has said, "Being told I would play Santoro was being told I was to die."

Santoro, the best pusher to play the modern game. He made the most of his talent time and again. The spoiler of spoilers.
@rbilleaud2 жыл бұрын
He's so deceptive. He lulls you into a false sense of security. Just kind of casually bats the ball back and forth. Like an old gent at the country club then pulls some crazy s**t out of the bag. Runs down everything too. I really miss him. As good as today's young players are, I just don't see any creativity in their game.
@kaialoha7 күн бұрын
Variety of tricky slow short balls midcourt very difficult to hit hard combined with great anticipation and quickness at passing is anathema to today's baseline slugging game. A small quick player should take a page from FS playbook and not try to outslug the sluggers. FS thought his way to multiple GS dubs and consistent second weeks in singles; and great career prize money; no pain and lots of fun. I call that a wonderful career.

Well, even to me, as a nole fan, it seems like he's throwing this match away on purpose, or that he was sick, I wouldn't have any other logical explanation for Djokivic's playstyle in here...
@daninaidu8 жыл бұрын
Do you play tennis? As a amateur-competitive player, one comes across a lot of so-called 'slicers', and believe me, looks are deceiving! They may not look very good, but they are damn hard to play! Seems to me Djokovic just had a lot of trouble adjusting to the style of play
@ricardopradenas98318 жыл бұрын
Daniel Naidu Well, yes, you are absolutely right. In fact, I played tennis for 9 years, so I know what you mean. I myself lost to uncomfortable "slicers" many times, so is not something new for me... but it's hard to think (at least for me) that a simple slicer could give to a player with such quality as Novak so many problems... I find it curious, to say the least...
@davidracing998 жыл бұрын
I agree with you, it definitely seemed like he gave it away on purpose. Perhaps there may have been somekind of a large bet going on at that time which is actually quite common in the atp, for example, tipsarevic vs khachanov a few years ago at the Kremlin Cup. As a result Nole may have simply tried to help a friend out or something

Guys, stfu saying Djokovic was shit. He was a couple of months away from winning his first slam, was ranked no.3 in the world, and had just made the us open final. Djokovic was far from shit. He was good. Just not great, but still a very good player back then. The fact that the ageing and nearly retired Santoro was able to beat him is nothing short of a miracle and a showcase of fabrice's (the magician as he was called) exceptional talent. Courts were faster back then so djokovics poor movement back then was exposed and the versatility of fabrice showed the no.3 in the world how to play tennis.
