When I listened to this song as a child (I am 50) I often thought, "why doesn't this jerk just give the poor horse a name?" Y'know - I shall call name this horse "Lightening," or something like that, and hope you have enough water and sunscreen for the rest of your trip. Over the years I have learned not to take things so literally. I look forward to the next campfire. Cool tune - thanks, Nick!

Awesome lesson. I like your strumming pattern better than what I found on the web. I try to learn at least one new thing about playing my guitar every day and your trick for changing cords is a very valuable tip!

It's actually much more elaborate than just 2 chords, however for the novice player, the 2 chords work fine. In actuality, there are 3 guitars (2 six strings and 1 twelve string) and a bass playing at the same time after the first verse and only one guitar is playing the part you're playing. After the bass comes in, the other instruments fill out the main riff with texturing that when you hear someone play it correctly, you smile from ear to ear. Add in the mysterious wet bongos (congas in the video) and the odd lyrics with incredible harmonies, and that takes a simple 2-chord song to make it amazing. This is what instantly stopped me and countless other people in our tracks in 1972. Lastly, the reason why so many people don't know this is because there's literally only one video of them playing it live, and you can barely see the third guitar player. It took me a lot of time to analyze what's actually going on and why it sounds much bigger than just two chords.

Nick is awesome, I would love to hear a tutorial on Velvet Undergound's 'Beginning To See The Light'. A simple strum-a-long with scope for strumming variations. Anyhoo, I picked up on this tune about 3yrs into learning and was so happy it was so simple, I felt like a pro playing to my friends. Great memories & a great tune too with so much atmosphere in 2 chords. Amazing :)

Cracking song. American group with an iconic American song, written and signed in the UK. Of course it's all about drugs (heck, they're Americans). I think I'm right in saying they were brought up on American Airforce bases in the UK. Check out America's Sister Golden Hair.

Dude. Give yourself some credit. How someone with such stubby mitts play like you do is fun to watch. You paid too many dues to take lightly. If you can teach me to play 'Little Lion Man' by mumford and sons my life would be complete.
