Most did honestly Vai, Satch, Yngwie, Vinnie M, Kotzen on and on still around making music. 90's into early 2k's was truly an abysmal time for great guitarists who used the whole fretboard and could do solos. But thankfully in recent years people have woke up again:)

Paul Gilbert is my favorite electric guitarist, and I love hearing him speak about music. The professional guitarist world is full of people who present themselves as mysterious, edgy, dark, enigmatic... it's full of unnecessary ego. And Gilbert just bucks all that. He is overtly bright, chipper, quirky, and wholesome. That is just so welcome and refreshing. He's a gift to the instrument's community, and I hope he continues to find success.

Paul Gilbert is so great on so many levels - major upbeat personality, awesome ambassador for guitar playing in general, and generally super guy. Plus he figured out how to step out of his 80's shadow and reinvent himself. Which is totally awesome and an achievement in itself. However - and I know he wants to play blues like crazy - there is something seriously unbluesy about his blues playing. He keeps coming back to it, year after year, with ever more bluesier and bluesier licks, yet it never stops sounding like a shredder. A shredder playing bluesy licks.

Paul: check out Pete Thorn -- he's got a great explanation on the early VH sound (and others): the delay is -- as is the case with all those guys playing through plexi's -- pre-distortion -- it's set really low so that you have to whack the strings super hard to hear it - the dynamics of the guitar hit the delay before the distortion, so when you play lightly through tons of gain, you don't really hear the delay at all -- after I saw that video I went "AHAH!.

If you set the delay level right you can have the repeats get progressively cleaner and darker when you have the delay before distortion, while the initial sound would be full dirty!

@@gkol69 exactly -- I think Eddie had that old echoplex set to maybe one repeat, and close to in time with whichever tune -- the repeat jumps out most on stabby rhythms like "On Fire" more than other places -- really cool how that's used.

@@mjobusch I've always preferred delay before gain pedals/amps because of that (and other reasons). Having it react to your playing dynamics like that is so satisfying, and I love how dirty and messy sounding it can get when you really blast it.

@@mjobusch I've got two analog delays right now, a really dark one and one that's bright and clear and I prefer them both before gain/amp. Even when I did have a digital delay I preferred it before gain/amp. Maybe it's partly because that's how I've always had it. When I started out I got my drive sound from a tube amp that didn't have an effects loop. I've tried delay after gain/amp a bunch of times since then, and while you can definitely get great sounds, I find I can get the sound I want and feel I want when delay is in front. When I'm using an overdrive/distortion sound I don't want delay repeats to be pristine, clear and perfect, I want them messy. Sorry for the paragraph response.

The first thing I did when I got the Helix floor pedalboard was to purchase a locking power cord. You won't accidentally unplug that thing. btw - I wish more people had Josh's attitude (and Paul for that matter). Those guys could be brothers. I really enjoyed this conversation.

@@FxBrawler It has to do with musicianship. There's dozens of youtube guitarists that are equal or better, technically. But, you've never heard of them. Trashy and craptastic as he was, everyone knows who Kurt Cobain is. The point is, Gilbert would use some breadboard science experiment someone sent him in the mail, if it made a sound that interested him.

The X2N go hard lol. I remember saying to myself “I have to get a set of DiMarzio pickups” so I went for (of course) the highest out put I could totally find. I never regretted it but I have since changed my tastes to more middle range output. They can literally push an amp on the point of break up into distorted range and yeah they do get warm lol
