This is a really good video. It's short and sweet while being straight to the point but without being too detailed and/or too vague.

"If those wings weren't swept, that [supersonic flow over the upper surface] absolutely could be the case" ... Weird turn of phrase, since with them being swept, that still is the case.

I still want to know if spanwise and chordwise perform around (above and under) the entire wing. Think above would be the answer.

Actually, the main reason why wings are sweptback is to minimize drag in general and not just wave drag. Because there’s spanwise flow, this allows the air to slide along the wings instead of forcing all of the air over or under. I’ve heard it said it’s like sliding down a ramp instead of running into a wall. Though because only some of the air is chordwise as opposed to all of it like straight wings, this also means less lift because it’s the chordwise flow that generates lift.

That being said, it is true indeed that swept wings increase the mach crit and the typical cruising speed is only slightly above that, because otherwise drag would increase dramatically, and therefore that is why a swept wing would allow a higher economical speed. But the critical mach is way below the maximum operating speed and therefore is not an "hard" limit itself.
@skylabsTV
@skylabsTV 8 жыл бұрын
This is slightly misleading. Spanwise flow only occurs significantly at higher AoA. To accelerate so much air spanwise in cruise is very inefficient as it is not creating lift, just drag. The benefit from swept wing is a thinner wing for the same wingspan. Same area as unswept, with less drag and delayed Mach transition from the lower chord thickness. Also less tip losses as flow near the tip has a lower spanwise pressure gradient. Yes the textbooks talk about spanwise flow, but look at the wind tunnel flow visualizations.
@TheMarcellification
@TheMarcellification 9 жыл бұрын
I kind of agree with all being said, but I wouldn't mention the critical mach number. In reality most jets operate above mach crit at normal cruising speed. That is the reason for the "mach trim" being installed, to compensate for the pitch down moment when the shockwave forms over the wing and the center of pressure moves aft.

Wait, the Aileron loses control first in sweptback?! If I'm wrong, please correct me with reference. Here's my understanding, Isn't it the wingroot first then the wingtip. Cause the critical speed is first reached by the wingroot since it ahead of the wingtip to receive the incoming air. So it will stall first to have more control over the Aileron in case of a high-speed stall.

I don’t understand why the airflow over the wing would suddenly take a turn to travel perpendicular to the wing. Also, I don’t get how the air traveling in a different direction makes the air travel slower. I also can’t find a simple answer to what spanwise flow is. Every video just says the same thing without actually explaining how it’s happening

I thought that the point of swept wings was to keep longer wings from hitting the high pressure air in the shock cone caused by your nose. Maybe that is a secondary reason for swept wings.

I've always wanted to know why modern airliners have a trailing edge that is roughly perpendicular to the fuselage initially, then sweeps back at a certain point (say for example sweeps back after the inboard aileron)

so is this different to a small light aircraft where the root tends to stall first, on sweptback wings the tip stalls first? how is in terms of losing some aileron/roll control?

I know slats and flaps, but what are 'slots'?
@Boldmethod
@Boldmethod 9 жыл бұрын
FoxtrotSim - Slots are permanently open slats. Sometimes "slots" are called "fixed slats," and sometimes "slats" are called "retractable slots." Slots were an early development on aircraft wings, and you can find full wing length slots on STOL aircraft (like the Zenith). Partial wing slots were used on aircraft like the Lockheed Hudson (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockheed_Hudson) to keep airflow attached at the wingtips during a stall - causing the aircraft to stall from the root out.

Why "only chordwise flow accelerates"? The total flow over the wing doesn't "know" if it's normal to the leading edge or not, right? I know this is fact, but I just can't understand why.
