Caution: Live prey brought to nest.
M flies in with a live rabbit and starts to work on de-furring it when it moves and startles M and E18. The rabbit moves a 2nd time and E17 gets startled and quickly goes into submission for the whole feeding! Now that is a first to see! E18 is so used to get knocked around he just bounces back and got a great feeding of rabbit! Harriet flies in with a whole squirrel and E18 is right there to get fed by Harriet! E17 finally does come back over and gets to eat too. At 22:49 you see E18's foot extended and has blood on it from the prey (no worries that E18 is bleeding!) The pantry is stocked with multiple fish, cattle egret, squirrel and rabbit today! Thank you for watching!

I think M was just as shocked as the Es were, I've seen flopping fish in the nest before but that was the first time I've seen a Flopping Rabbit, thought it might try to hop right out of the nest, which still wouldn't have ended well for the poor Bunny - and E17 had a rough day, first he/she gets knocked over by Mom fending off an Owl and then by Dad wrestling with a Rabbit, but it did give E18 a nice meal without worrying about getting bonked and before M was even finished with the Rabbit, Harriet flew in with a squirrel, it was a Smorgasbord today.

I like the little side eye E18 does checking to see if the coast is clear for her/him to do a snatch and grab to avoid being bonked. E18 is learning valuable lessons, was even trying to self feed while M15 was de-furring. E17 finally gets a dose of her/him own medicine, over there sitting stiff and scared.

Coping with E17, E18 has definitely developed a curiosity and keen eye for observation! Learning how the opportunist can overcome the bully! My guess is that we will be seeing some change in nest dynamics over the next week or two. Fun to watch.

It will be interesting to see if the pattern holds from from the last two seasons with the Younger Eaglet leaving before the Older one - both E13 & E16 left before E12 & E15 did and when E12 & E15 did leave they ended up returning and stayed for a while longer, maybe having discovered what works in the nest doesn't necessarily work out in the wild - that was a pretty hard shove E17 got from the Rabbit, so maybe he/she gained some humility from it - but it was great fun watching E12 & E15 and E17 will do well if he/she grows up to be like them.

I was so happy to see E18 getting his fill first! It’s been hard for me to watch this year with E17 being such a bully and obvious size difference in the two. I know aggressive behavior is natural, but I’m always rooting for E18. I do love how he has perfected the looong sideways neck extension to get a bite in, with keeping his head protected from E17. Gotta root for the underdog, or in this case, the underbird!! 🦅 🦅 🐦 🐦

Sometimes nature is so brutal to watch but it is nature in its truest sense. I had a hawk bring down a blue jay in my back yard recently; it mantled over the poor jay while it screamed as its feathers were flying. Hard to watch but had to reconcile my visceral response with "hawks have to eat and feed their young" - no Publix shopping for impersonal plastic wrapped meat as we do. After a few minutes a squirrel flew down the tree and chased the hawk away with the jay in its talons; later observed she (he?) had a nest in the upper branches. Nature doing what nature does....

I have had hawks come in my yard because I have a bird feeder and I put feed and peanuts under it on the ground for the birds and squirrels if I catch the hawk back there early enough before it catches anything I chase it out of my yard, I'm not trying to feed hawks and believe me I like all birds but they have to find their food elsewhere

I know that in Nature it is survival of the fittest and an eat or be eaten rule, but this is still hard to watch. I realise M15 is teaching his young that food isn’t already prepared to eat and there is work to do before dinner is served. 18 seems more interested and our little dominant bully is hiding. Part of me is glad for that. When he realises he’s missing out, things go back to normal. A family feast and big lessons for our eaglets today. ❤️🦅🦅🐥🐥🇦🇺

Ladyhawk will correct me if I’m wrong...but it is my understanding that eagles and other birds of prey do their best to put a “killing bite” on the back of the neck of their prey. The movement afterward is just nerves and muscles and whatnot. A quick kill is a good kill in the animal kingdom. Pretty gruesome by human standards, tho. 😣
