MY FIRST MARATHON (MARATHON VLOG) | Hitting the Wall at the Edinburgh Marathon

With no prior running experience, I embarked on the challenge of running the Edinburgh Marathon. It changed my life.
Was it unrealistic to aim for the time of 3 hours 30 minutes for my first marathon? Possibly, but the world of long distance running was new to me and I wanted to set myself a challenging target.
The video documents my five month journey from devising a marathon training plan, embarking on marathon training to arriving at the start line in the best shape of my life. It also follows every step of the eventful race itself.
Having just turned 40 years old, I had this strange desire to see how far I could push myself both physically and mentally. The experience certainly delivered on that front.
For years I have looked on in awe of my friends who have taken on their own marathons. For me, it had always seemed a step too far.
I had always wondered why would you want to put yourself through the pain of running a marathon. What can you gain by pushing yourself to the limit and inflicting that level of misery on yourself voluntarily? My experience taught me the answer.
I hope that my story can provide some marathon motivation. It was undoubtedly one of the best experiences of my life.
A wise person once said, “Everything you ever wanted to know about yourself you can learn in 26.2 miles”. I can testify to that.

I just finished first Marathon today, I finished in 6 hours which is slow, but it was one of the most difficult thing that I have ever done. 3 hours and 34 minutes is awesome. I felt sad, you seemed a little disappointed you didn't finish in 3 hours and 30 minutes. You did awesome, better than most. I understand completely about the 2 mile, it was the hardest for me.

@@Swiftfilmsuk You're too kind! You should be extremely proud! I did have a question however - when watching your Vlog. Did you buy any specific running shoe during your journey? or did you use the one you had since the very beginning? I have heard so many things from so many people, but as you ran your first one, what are your thoughts?
@Swiftfilmsuk
@Swiftfilmsuk 2 жыл бұрын
@@gianmanp Good question! During marathon training I bought a pair of On cloud (cloud racers I think?). However, these were quite heavy. Three weeks before the marathon I went against everything that I had read and bought a new pair of running shoes - the Nike 4% vaporfly. These were so much lighter and felt really fast. No idea if this was a silly move or not, but the Nike shoes did feel like they made a big difference. Very expensive though!

dude that is such an incredible time. i watched this before my first marathon and it inspired me so much. after running mine, i re watched this and i was able to understand you more than ever. this video is such a beautiful motivator to anybody wanting to run a marathon. your time was also INSANE for a first marathon. like holy shit dude. i know your goal was 3:30, but damn man. 3:34 is nuts!

I really appreciate that. Thank you very much! I admit to being totally naive when it came to doing my first marathon and I really didn't have much of an idea about how to train properly. But I think that was partly the beauty of the whole experience! I'm much smarter about running training now as a direct consequence of doing this. Many thanks again and congratulations to you for completing your first marathon!

That was epic, man. You giving yourself those positive affirmations, dedicating those miles to your family, and then those last couple hundred yards. I was rooting for you all throughout. Awesome accomplishment, and as a short film it was really relatable and well documented. Also, 3:34 in your first marathon after 4 months of training is impressive! I'm going to be in the 2022 NYC marathon and this video was inspirational!

I just ran my first marathon 2 days ago. I cried watching this because I truly felt every emotion you had. There are no words to describe hitting the wall and how it wrecks you to your very core. Good for you for pushing through and finishing!! “Don’t stop when you’re tired. Stop when you’re done.”

Such an inspirational vlog and a touching self discovery. I’m only new to running, knocked off a couple of 5km races and now upping it to 10km in 6weeks. I have said I’m not going g to escalate it to a half and then potentially a full, but watching this and your journey has me wanting to test myself. I’ve just turned 43, so can relate to this video a lot!!

Thank you so much! Running definitely has an addictive quality to it. It’s something that I really like about it. You’re always tempted to see how much further you can push yourself, how much faster you can run. I discovered it comparatively late in life but I’m really glad I did. I wish you every success with your running. Thanks again! 🙂
