All Things Birdie

Күн бұрын

If you do an online search of swifts, you will get an abundance of images of the bird in flight. There will also be a couple pictures of the bird in someone's hand, not standing, but a sort of awkward sitting or leaning forward on its chest. They are often mislabeled as swallows. In fact, early ornithologists thought that that's what they were.
And while swifts and swallows do have similarities in body size, wing shape and foraging style, swifts take those characteristics and bump it up about 10 notches.

From an evolutionary viewpoint, I regard the swift as one of the most developed species on this planet: In the early beginning, life emerged in the sea, and our vertebrate ancestors were swimming in the oceans. The first big step was when the vertebrates went ashore, and the second big step was when the birds took the sky. But for me, the ruler of the sky is not the eagle or the falcon. The greatest bird is the swift that is swimming in the big ocean of air. The swift lives most of the year in the large ocean above. Thanks for your nice videos.

There are attempts to domesticate edible-nest swift at least in Thailand and Malaysia. They would build or modify buildings specifically to attract these little birds to nest in side in their habitats and safe guarding them to harvest those nest later. As the price of their nest are so attractive, these buildings are fairly common from the gulf of Thailand to the tip of Malaysian peninsula. I think these farming attempts make it fairly common to find the species in the area.

Cool! They look so aerobatic and sleek. They’re basically bat-birds!

they are frequently mistaken for bats because of their twisting flight but the way to tell them apart is bats don’t make audible sound whereas swifts twitter

I got into birding over a year ago I'm a big fan of your videos; I always learn so much from them and the effort you put into them is noticeable! Where I live, I see (and hear) chimney swifts during the summer. I also saw the common swift for the first time this summer while I was travelling in Portugal. I was amazed to learn that they spend almost all of their time flying.

Had some hanging out in an area I bird during this past Autumn migration. They stayed a few weeks. Could hear their "chittering". Only heard that a couple of times over the years.

Wow, did not know anything about them and they are incredible! Did some research and learned that sometimes they migrate to Hawai’i but it’s rare. They remind me a bit of Shearwaters whom I just love! We have them here.
