#swimisodes Learn how we teach butterfly technique at the Race Club swim camps: theraceclub.com/swim-camps/ with Olympic Gold Medalist and World Record Holder Roland Schoeman and Coach Gary Hall. Butterfly is a challenging swimming stroke because it requires tremendous upper body strength and a strong kick. In order to perform great butterfly technique a swimmer not only needs great conditioning but also perfect timing. Good swimming technique for fly also requires minimizing the frontal drag forces that are so overpowering to all swimmers.
Frontal drag in the butterfly increases significantly when the front breath is taken, caused by a shift from a horizontal to a more vertical body position in the water. The more vertical the body, the greater the frontal drag force. To make matters worse, the breath occurs during the fastest point in the stroke cycle, when the body can be travelling at nearly 7 miles per hour in elite butterflyers, faster than any other stroke including Freestyle.
To lessen the frontal drag in butterfly, Roland demonstrates in this Swimisode one our favorite swim drills at The Race Club, the butterfly skate drill. With this important swim drill, swimmers can learn to keep their shoulders lower and elevate more with their necks to get the breath, resulting in a faster and easier butterfly technique.

Many thanks for this video! This is the best drill for butterfly, period. It is difficult to perform, as with the drill the recovery phase can be partly underwater, but it really helps to understand how fly works. My fly immediately improved a lot, and now I see that butterfly can be fun as well.

I tried using the neck muscles today and it instantly make my fly more effortless. I actually thought popping the shoulders out of the water meant that you were exerting good strength on the pull, so that you have more momentum from the height for the dive. Similar to the breaststroke where popping more of your upper body out of the water gave you more momentum and a better body position for the forward drive. Seems like in both cases there's a trade off between momentum and streamline? I will definitely be practicing incorporating the neck into my fly. Before I was trying to propel my shoulders out of the water which was very tiring, but now I see how swimming long distance fly is even possible (except for my leg cramps). Great tip!

Awesome! Thank you for the recommendation coach Gary! I tried that drill and wow it really helped me for the butterfly. A lot of énergie is used to fight the drag when we don’t think about staying as horizontal as possible. At one point I was reducing my arms push and increased my arms cadence to keep my forward momentum but I quickly realized that reducing the drag is a superior approach. Same thing with the breaststroke, there is so much similarities between those two strokes.

Great tip, I learned the style with deep wave, but understood the center of mass can´t oscilating that much, getting more muscle effort, loosing streamline and creating resistance. A good image that work for me is the eletromagnetic wave spectrum, best for fly is toward radio wave.

Hi Coach, I really want to understand this correctly, so I apologize for having to ask what you meant by "full neck extension as he breath" at 2:07. Does he raise his neck from the full horizontal position (neck straight, face down)? Or do the arm pulls cause his neck to raise naturally? Thank you.
@theraceclub
@theraceclub 6 жыл бұрын
No. The neck should be extended for the breath, then snapped down on the recovery, timed with the hand entry and second down kick.

Bob Bowman teaches and stresses that you don't stress the neck by forcing your chin out by looking up, but to have a relaxed neck and to lead with a flat chest, low chin, and low arm recovery, to minimize drag. In doing so, the swimmer will utilize the strongest anatomical muscles in your body which are your latissimus dorsi and pectoral muscles to drive the upper part of your body forward. I like the drill, but not the way it was taught.
@theraceclub
@theraceclub 6 жыл бұрын
in order to keep the shoulders lower (body more horizontal), extension of the neck is necessary for the breath. MP was nearly fully extended for the breath. One also gains coupling energy by snapping the head down timed with the hand entry and second down kick. If one doesn't extend the neck forward, then one cannot snap it down. Same in breaststroke.

Coach Gary I have a question to ask and would be very interested to know your answer! I always though that the first kick with the arm pull were done to help you get out of the water enough that you can breath. From what I see in this video the neck and head positioning seem to do a pretty good job of helping you breed without that much power requirement from the arm and kicks. Is that true? Does it mean that without much leg and arm power you can swim the butterfly? you will simply not move fast forward? I would have some concern with my arms recovery not having much shoulder mobility. Any trick on the arm recovery? I guess this why you recommend using fins until we are efficient in our kick!
@theraceclub
@theraceclub Жыл бұрын
Hi Marc, The kick actually provides four different functions. The main one (if you use them properly and you have the right ankle flexibility and leg strength) is to generate propulsion. they also cause lift for the back end of the body, balance of forces with the pulling arm and help take advantage of the law of inertia by keeping the speed more constant (again, if you use them with a good 6 beat kick)

This is the only drill that I found on youtube to fix "elevated shoulder" problem in butterfly. But it's not an easy drill to do for young swimmer. My 10y old tried without a success. Next time we will try it with fins see if it helps. If she still can't do it, we will try breathing on the side.
@theraceclub

Yes...please do this drill with fins. Actually, many very young butterflyers swim this way because they need to pause for a rest.
@ibelievecn
@ibelievecn 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Fins work much better. I also noticed that my DD lifted her shoulders even on the non-breathing strokes. What caused that? Was that because her arms plunged down instead of pulling backwards? How to fix that?
@theraceclub
@theraceclub 8 жыл бұрын
Can be related to flexibility in the shoulder. The more one can extend the shoulders (point the arms backwards), the less one needs to elevate for the recovery. Sometimes, however, it is simply a bad habit that must be corrected.

Chad uses a full extension of the neck on the breath and while his shoulders elevate more than most butterflyers on the breath, he has the strongest kick of any flyer in the world. I don't think the elevation of the shoulders helps him, but the strength of his kick does.
