What's funny is that I have become a more effective backstroke swimmer after doing some "adapted" TI drills due to my imbalance because of having cerebral palsy. This video has always been helpful, but my Masters coach made backstroke even so much easier for me than how you show backstroke to be an easy stroke to do. I actually enjoy backstroke better than freestyle now, after fighting with it for years...

thanks for sharing this video, is the chin should be 180 degree or little up ?
@ChrisBurtonSwims
@ChrisBurtonSwims 9 жыл бұрын
Mikey 2015 You want you chin in a neutral position (i.e. not tucked looking at your toes & not arched too far back). For example, watch the beginning of this Ryan Lochte video (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bamdgMKLmMDYZYk.html). Now, if you are used to tucking your chin some, a neutral 180 degree position may feel like you're looking back really far.

Any suggestions on how to go straight for a beginner learning backstroke. Im zigzagging to the other end.
@ChrisBurtonSwims

Try to find something to key off of visually. For example, you can look for the lane marker out of the corner of you eye, or sometimes there are structures on the ceiling that you can focus on. Focus on reaching and pulling symmetrically with each arm stroke. If you are reaching farther or pulling harder with one arm more than the other, this will cause you to go off course. The same can be said with the kick. If one leg is stronger or kicking harder than the other, this will cause you to drift while swimming.

Is there some sort of trick to help figure out when you're arriving to the end of the lane? In the pools I go to, I try to notice something distinct on the ceiling, like lighting fixtures or wires, but well it's not perfect and also not universally applicable.
@ChrisBurtonSwims
@ChrisBurtonSwims Жыл бұрын
Well, at most "lap"pools, they have flags going across the lanes near the end of the pool, and you learn how many strokes it takes from the flags to the wall. Also, the lane markers often change to a solid color from the flags in. While there is a difference between yard and meeter pools in term of the distance, it's pretty close to the same. If you swimming in a pool without those features, then you have to rely on other features like you are already doing. So many strokes past the ladder, or light fixture, etc.

@@ChrisBurtonSwims Thanks for your reply. Here in Luxembourg, I haven't seen flags at any of the pools I visited, including the only olympic sized pool in the country. But I checked the lane markers and indeed they turn to a solid color, I haven't really paid any attention to them before. Now I'm checking the lane marker and it helped a lot. Thanks :)

I don't understand the need for the alternate out-of-the-water arm backstroke. I'm just a beginner, but I find this method tiring and uncomfortable. On the other hand, you have what some call the ELEMENTARY backstroke. Elementary it may be, but it's also comfortable and it is not all tiring. I may be, probably am, wrong but I think I could use this stoke for many hours. Whether or not I could swim the English channel using it is debatable (the water is too rough), but I do feel that I could continue with this stroke from sunrise to sunset in perfect safety and comfort. Am I wrong? Oh, I just remembered another strong point of the "elementary" backstroke, is that it's easy to learn. As soon as I was shown this stroke, I could do it. This is not true with any other stroke. I'm confident that I will eventually be able to breathe while using the freestyle stroke, but I haven't reached that point yet.

The out-of-the-water arm backstroke is used in competitive swimming (butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle). Elementary backstroke is a non-competitive stroke like side-stroke. For fitness, you can use any of these strokes to get you workout in. If elementary backstroke fits your needs, then that's great! As you continue to work on freestyle, here are some videos that might help. Freestyle Side-Breathing Drills (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qrF-mZCD1Z28ias.html) & Freestyle - Adult Beginners (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hdWXnrh-vd6lZoU.html)

Thanks for your advice and the videos. I've been practicing breathing while walking, while floating, and while swimming across the pool, but I'm now going to take your advice and use a kickboard. One last question. While trying freestyle, I keep kicking the floor of the pool. That hurts like hell, and seriously affects my freestyle efforts. Are there such things as toe protectors for use in the pool? I could use small swim fins for this purpose, but I'm trying to learn without fins.
@ChrisBurtonSwims
@ChrisBurtonSwims 7 жыл бұрын
The fact that you feet are hitting the bottom indicates that you are holding your head too high and that you have an inefficient kick. The higher you hold your head, the more your feet sink. In addition to the side-breathing drills, try some kick with the kick board. Kick with your whole leg (not just from the knee down) with pointed (ballerina like) toes. Don't be afraid to use fins. My kids are competitive swimmers and they use fins in practice sometimes. Fins help with ankle flexibility and can help strengthen you legs.

Okay, thanks. I can know where my feet are by positioning them so that I can hear when they break the surface, but I understand that is an inefficient way of kicking, so I usually don't do that. However, when my feet are not breaking the surface of the water,I don't know where they are. I think I should, but I keep kicking the floor so I guess I don't. Anyway, you've been helpful enough, so I'm not going to take any more of your time. I go swimming every day, and tomorrow I'm going to wear my smallest swim fins. I'm also asking about water shoes. I don't know what they're meant for, or if they would suit my needs, but I'll find out. Thanks again.

Basic backstroke is a survival stroke. It is certainly a good stroke to learn should you find yourself out in deep water and want to get to land, a structure, or a boat. It is as vital a stroke as treading watering is for survival. Regular backstroke is a competitive stroke, for efficiency/speed in moving through the water.
