Our humpback whale encounters in Tonga were probably one of the most memorable experiences of our lives. Come with us on our journey to the Kingdom of Tonga and meet lovely EJ from EJs Encounters. She shares with us her knowledge about the whales and what can be done to protect them.
While we’re sliding into the water, our heartbeat starts to speed up. We stare into the blue. But as soon as we get a first glimpse of these majestic creatures, the whole world seems to stop for a moment. It feels so unreal! What a privilege to be in their presence 💙😭.
12 passengers, two propellers, zero security - that’s by far the smallest plane we’ve ever been traveling in!
It takes us to the tiny island Ha’apai in the Kingdom of Tonga 🏝👑. From above the clouds we already get a first glimpse of what’s awaiting us: empty beaches, fresh coconuts 😋 and a crystal clear ocean. Only the humpback whales, which are the main reason for our visit, are still hiding. We need a little time to ease into it - no electricity, no reception, no connection to the rest of the world (that's why we post this in retrospect). Collected rainwater for drinking, freshly harvested papayas for breakfast 🍈. Our highlights: The campfire at the beach every evening, sunsets over the ocean and the sandy kisses of our hyperactive island dog "Puppy" 🐶😍.
„And why Tonga?“ - Because these pacific islands are one of the very few places on Earth, where you get the chance to observe whales under water 🐋💙. Every spring humpback whales travel more than 5.000 kilometers from Antarctica to the warm waters around Tonga. That's where they mate, give birth to their calves and raise them, until they are big enough to survive Antarctica's freezing temperatures. A whale calve gains up to 50kg per day, while their mothers don't feed at all here. In the end of summer they travel back South together.
Snorkeling with whales is very strictly regulated here. Encounters should be initiated by the animals. If they don't show any interest in our boat, nobody enters the water.
In the 60s and 70s, humpback whales were hunted to the brink of extinction for their oil and meat. We were told that there were only 32 breeding females left in Tonga. In 1978, the King of Tonga announced it illegal to kill the whales (so did Australia), so 2018 marks their 40st anniversary of not being hunted in this part of the world 🐳🎉.
Getting close and personal with 30 tonnes humpbacks, looking into the eyes of these highly intelligent mammals and watching them interact with us was definitely an experience we’ll never ever forget 🐋😍. We really hope that Tonga’s whale tourism is going to stay as strictly regulated as it is, so that it remains a safe place for the whales to spend the summer and raise their young.
Thanks, EJ for the lovely interview and your enthusiasm and work for the ocean.
Thanks to our guides Carrie & Trav from @mammalswithgills for contributing some of your footage.
Stay curious!

A huge privilege indeed. We just spent a week swimming with humpbacks at Tonga Blue Lagoon resort in Vava'u Northern Tonga. Just 4 people plus guide per whale and limited boat licences for whale swims. AWESOME WHALES, AWESOME PEOPLE AND AWESOME FOOD. Magical.

Another fantastic video! I have chills!!!! What an incredible experience! I want to go swimming with the whales! I love how you turn your amazing experiences into educational bits about how we are impacting these incredible places and what we can do to reduce that impact. I've started going plastic free, but there is still a lot of progress that I can make. Videos like this are good motivators to keep trying to figure out more ways to eliminate plastic in my life. I don't eat fish, so that aspect isn't a problem for me, but I didn't realize that eating farmed fish had impacted the whale's environment so much! Keep making videos like these! I LOVE them!

Thanks, this comment made our day - just read it and we couldn't be happier about your feedback. Yes, for us there's also still a long road ahead to reduce our plastic waste, but we're trying to improve as much as possible. Cheers, Doris & Matthias 🐻

Wow, what an experience. I would love to be able to experience it myself one day. Great drone footage. Yuk... plastic. It's appalling to see. It's great that you've highlighted the issue here. I've been making a massive effort to cut-down on plastic use. I now get glass bottled milks, veg boxes full of loose veg, bring my own containers to shops to get meat and cheese from the counter, always use a bag for life and don't get disposable drinks. Small steps but I'm happy with progress so far :)

Majestic. I had no clue these whales were available to see in Tonga. How close to they allow you to go near them? were you scared?

Tonga is one of very few places in the world where you can get very close to those giants. The tours are strictly regulated: max. one boat with one whale, big distances (the whale approaches the boat, not the other way round), max. 4 swimmers + whale guide in the water, max. times etc.; We had great respect of those giants, but we weren't scared. They are very humble and gentle underwater. A very special, experience!

Great video! Another way to assist these animals in rebuilding their populations (particularly in Oceania) is to allow cows with calves to rest, build strength and bond. It has been proven and is still being proven that cetacean swim with tourism is having a negative affect at a population level. Human babies are given time to rest, grow and bond in peace...we do the same for dogs and cats (6 - 8 weeks) yet we don't afford this same consideration to the humpback whales of Tonga. Why not? Tourists look at this issue as the impact they, themselves may be having but forget about the day after day, boat after boat affect....the cumulative affect. Studies show that in Vava'u a cow/calf pair can expect to be in the company of a whale swim vessel for over 7 hours per day. Is this acceptable for a newborn and its mother that has just travelled around 5,000 kilometres? Time for change!

Thanks a lot for your comment and drawing attention to this topic! We're very picky about the „wildlife experiences“ we’re booking and question our impact on wildlife as travelers a lot. That’s why we appreciate you mentioning this! To have the lowest impact on the whales possible, we went on a trip with the most sustainable operator we could find (having very strict rules about small groups, not approaching the whales, proper distances, max. time, no freediving etc.) on Ha’apai, which is still very unpopular and ours was the only boat around most of the time. Still, we decided not to promote whale swimming in a separate video we had already produced, since we’re now very aware of the impact people in huge numbers can have and don’t want Tonga to become a more crowded destination. We shared this one anyway, because we loved EJs message and whales touch people very deeply 💙.

Absolutely loving it. They are so majestic. And you also talk about the bad influence mankind has. Especially all this one time use plastics are just a pain. Don't use plastic bags, plant trees, go vegan there are many things we can do. Great video BTW.

Appreciate that feedback a lot! Thanks, guys! Yes, one-time-plastic is the enemy (one of many). This stuff is just everywhere in our oceans. I hope mankind finds a truly long-term solution for this misery! Thanks, guys!
