Good job man, as a retired poolman I have come across this many times. I mainly did commercial pools but also residential, I can't tell you how many times I was flagged down by a desperate home owner who said her poolman stopped servicing the pool, it is green and they are having a pool party in 2 days. Everything this guy did was spot on with the only one exception. I would return the next day to do a complete filter clean cuz if you have algae in the pool shell you also have it in the filter tank and you have to get rid of it. The best part was picking up the check and having the homeowner praise you and thank you.

On a DE or Cartridge, it would be a given for me to tear down and clean the filter. For this one I ran some sodium-hypo through the filter and did a big (actually several) backwash

Jesse if you add that much chlorine how would it be swimmable in two days? I know it burns off but does neutralizing all the algae also use enough of the free chlorine to making it safe to swim again?
@jessecastro8453
@jessecastro8453 Жыл бұрын
@Simon Waddington yes Simon. It takes a lot of chlorine to turn a algae green pool around. With algaecide eats up a lot of the chlorine. After filter clean, let pump run 24hrs. Check chlorine level next day, vacuum up the dead algae to waste if you can. Then adjust ph and chlorine level. Should be good to go in 2 days at least. If chlorine level still high. Knock it down with some Thiotrine.
@randymotter51

Glad you mentioned circulation as a major factor in the results, I once worked at an apartment complex that let its pool pumps get into disrepair and they barely circulated the water in the pools, so getting them clean and stopping the growth of algae was a constant battle and ultimately a losing one given that they barely had enough people to do all the work. No matter how good you are at cleaning these, the owner still has to be on top of maintaining all the important equipment.
@SwimmingPoolAZ-SPS

As you know they go hand in hand. It takes like 3-4x the Chems to know out algae on a pool with a bad pump.

Shock or any algasides aren't needed in my opinion. I've been doing pools 13 years in SW FL. Regular chems will take care of any bloom no problem. Cool it changed color so fast. But its gotta filter out still and he spent alot of $$ on that stop! 2 jugs and some acid would have knocked that out overnight..
@andrewharrison5740
@andrewharrison5740 4 жыл бұрын
@@Eagle1538 completely agree. I never use algaecide myself. Just liquid chlorine and time to filter it out with a few backwashes/cleanings in between to help it along. Lowering the pH does help too. People really overestimate what chemicals are necessary for a clean pool. In my own pool I just use liquid chlorine, and muriatic acid when necessary to lower pH. That's it. My pool is so clear, you could throw a quarter into the deep end and still read the date, lol.

Some chemicals are specifically designed to go into the skimmer but most are best diluted into the main pool - important to know the difference. You don’t see equipment failure immediately but a pool inspector can find early evidence of damage in just a few months of chemical corrosion

I think it would be fair to note that this type situation was an algae "flare up" that occurred over a short period of time. Pools that have not been chemically treated or serviced for longer periods of time will require a more extensive process.

@@94SexyStang Yes, often that is the case. But in this case it can also be the result of equipment failures such as a clogged in-line chlorinator, pump failure, unusually excessive chlorine demand for some reason, etc.... Every pool tech out there has run into that situation where we are met by a green pool when showing up for weekly service. When a pool has been neglected for a long period of time, the owner already knows why the pool is green.

I'd have done 4 lbs of trichlor powder for a couple of reasons 1. Ph of trichlor is around 3 so no need to add extra acid 2. Much cheaper than 10 gallons of bleach not to mention the space it saves in your truck. 3. You may not have had to use an algecide trichlor is strong enough and lasts long enough in the water to most likely kill all the algae on its own. 4. For every pound of trichlor you get 2-5 ppm cyanuric acid so you almost don't have to add cyanuric acid to start the pool. Good jobs regardless but it's still a business gotta be the most efficient you can to make money
@SwimmingPoolAZ-SPS

We use Dichlor on startups as it’s 9 ppm of CYA for every 10 ppm of chlorine. Here in Phx we struggle with high CYA and water hardness so that’s why I’m such a fan os sodium-hypo

@jonathanpotts3591 5 жыл бұрын
Fair enough I'm in the phx area too and ya high cya is a problem from all the evaporation but you still have to have a base for startup and the only reason I'm not huge on the dichlor is its not typically as strong it only has somewhere in the 70% range of available chlorine so basically 3lbs of dichlor is equal to 2 lbs of triChlor as far as chlorine concentration

If you come back and check the water and the chlorine is low or 0, be ready with chlorine to add to jump it back up. Once the water is holding chlorine and clear, let it naturally drop down to that 2-4 ppm range. Definitely pull the filter apart and do a good cleaning once you’re back to blue and almost clear.

It's YOUR responsibility to check the Water every day........Pool guys usually just Shock it and Clean it, but that ONLY lasts a short time.......the owner is responsible for daily maintenance and water tests.

When performing this should I shoot for a certain ppm of chlorine or just add 10 gallons? 10,000 gallon pool.

it may be slightly blue, but it's foggy and needs the algae removed from the bottom once yet more chemicals are added to stick to the algae and it falls to the bottom. they don't just dissppear.

Yup! Check out our post under the community tab of our channel. I posted a picture of the pool the next day. Everything settled out and it was ready to vacuum....if only all green pools were this easy to knock out!

How does this even work - even if the algae dies from the elevated chlorine level there's no way the filter removed all the algae in that time so is it literally bleaching the color out of the green chlorophyl in the algae?

My Cya level was to high. Drained 25k gallons of my 30k gallon pool. Refilled with clean water and added clarifier. Staying away from any chlorine tablet that has any stabilizer. Pool is pristine now.

If you can dial in the CYA level and stay on top of the chlorine, it works really well. This is one of the advantages of using a salt chlorine generator. No CYA build up

Yup, you can’t go dumping stuff down the skimmer Willy nilly. You have to make sure it’s safe first so you don’t end up with damaged equipment or a blown up filter.

Doesn't all that liquid chlorine cause the pH to spike? Bleach is pH is 11-13. I exclusively use liquid chlorine and have trouble keeping the pH at normal 7.5.

Very interesting, Zach.. thanks for sharing. Turning it blue in minutes? In addition to a couple hours of brushing, flushing, backwashing and flushing.. yeah the reaction was pretty fast.. but that was a back breaking coupla minutes. To the guy from the pool store that said it was $40 worth of stuff.... maybe wholesale. Bleach is $3.40/gal, acid is another $4/gal, the algacide is $31, and electricity is $0.22 / kwh. I wish I had your math! Glad to know theres an algaecide that isn't antagonistic with chlorine... I had read you should not add chlorine and algacide at the same time. Seems to me. as a homeowner, letting your pool go green is about a $200 mistake...What am I missing?
@SwimmingPoolAZ-SPS
@SwimmingPoolAZ-SPS 5 жыл бұрын
Ej Koford the prep work (brushing the heck out of it thoughly, backwashing, etc) are key and take some time but once THAT amount of Chlorine goes in after all that, it’s minutes. The algacide we used (Pooltec by Easy Care) can be put in along with chlorine. The next day the pool was clear. Depending on your pool, the price can vary for a treatment like this. A homeowner should be able to get the equivalent done for less than $200

I only use liquid chlorine, not stabilized. And set the cyanuric acid level at 30 and keep it there with granular cyanuric acid. I assume you do the same. When you use stabilized chlorine you lose all control over the chlorine and cyanuric acid levels as opposed to setting them individually. This one trick is the key to controlling the pool.Of course also controlling the other variables, of pH, alkalinity and calcium hardness. But cyanuric acid is the king.

On my own pool where I’m there every day to keep an eye on things, I sure would. In AZ at our weekly service pools we’re stuck, at least in the summer months relying on tabs to keep a residual between visits.
