Cloudy pool water is caused by four common issues: poor filtration, low chlorine levels, poor water chemistry, and outside contaminants like debris or algae. Regardless of why your pool is cloudy, there are two products that can help clear things up: pool flocculant or water clarifier. But you can’t use them in every situation. And you’ll need to tackle the root of the problem first. Luckily, once you start treating your water, the cloudiness should go away quickly. So here’s a step-by-step guide on how to clear up cloudy water in 48 hours or less.

Good point about skimmer flaps (weir gates). When taking on a new pool it's one of the first things I look at, making sure they are in place and working correctly. If they are stuck down or missing, the vast majority of the water going into the skimmer is sub-surface level. Floating debris (dust, dirt, pollen, leaves) will go right past the skimmer, and sink eventually. The weir blocks off most the water allowing only about the top half inch or so to get in. Surface tension draws nearby debris into the skimmer. Properly working weir gates can make a huge difference in the pool's cleanliness.

My above ground pool was green but after several shocking several times , vacuuming and running the filter it is now blue and levels are good. The problem is it’s cloudy and the CYA is at 0 with a test strip but about 30 at the pool store. I had added CYA 3 days ago , liquid in the skimmer. They are saying leave it alone but it’s still super cloudy. I clean the filter 2x a day - but it’s pretty clean w the exception of some small particles from pine trees. Any advice. Chlorine on the strip is also slightly high but not at the store test. Help!!

Hey! Some ppl say you should not use Flocculant with filterballs? Is that correct? They also says that about ClearPool (which I guess is what you call Clarifier). Do you know anything about that?
@SwimUniversity
@SwimUniversity Жыл бұрын
It's the same reason you wouldn't want to use floc with a cartridge filter: you need the floc to bypass the filter medium (on backwash). Any floc going through your filter medium, like a cartridge or filter balls, will stick to and ruin it. If you can bypass your filter (like a backwash or drain port), you should be fine!

Can flocculant be used with a DE filter? I was taught not to use it as it would clog the grids.
@SwimUniversity
@SwimUniversity Жыл бұрын
If you vacuum out the flocculant through the waste port using a backwash hose, it won't touch your filter grids.

My free chlorine and combined chlorine are both high. So I added non chlorine shock. But I feel like I should have added a cal hypo shock instead. Can I still add that or do I wait 24hrs?
@SwimUniversity
@SwimUniversity 4 ай бұрын
You don't need to wait that long to add chemicals after adding non-chlorine shock. Test your chlorine levels after adding the non-chlorine shock. And if the combined chlorine hasn't come down, you can use chlorine shock.

So what if your pool is clean and it has chlorine in it but the top layer of the water has tiny debris? I’ve been trying to learn how to service my pool for a while now but I never really understood why the top layer never gets perfectly screen. I’m not sure if it’s the skimmer that just doesn’t have enough power to suck up the debris or what.

Flocculant needs to sit for 8 hours before its vacuumed. So by the time you add shock, it'll be the next day!

Have some questions. Can a 20g chlorine weekly tab or multichlorine tab be split in two pieces, so that one half can be used in dispensers/floats in smaller spa pools? Does anyone know anything about it?

My pool was green like a pond. Used liquid Chlorbrite two different times. Killed algae, have stable levels of chlorine and all other levels. I have used Flocc two different times, exactly like directions. Waited 24-48 hours both times. Nothing has fallen and pool is still light blueish green cloudy. Any thoughts?

Ok, so you have tested the alkaline and it’s within the suggested 100-150 ppm? The pH is within 7.2-7.5? The chlorine is at 3 ppm?
@madisongreymont5108
@madisongreymont5108 Жыл бұрын
When you added the floc did you change the circulation to recirculate? The filter should be bypassed cause otherwise, the floc is being filtered out as soon as you put it in.

And that would be why you are not seeing coagulation of particles and floc at the bottom of your pool.

My water was very cloudy, my ph was good, added floc, according to directions. Vacuumed up the settled debris but water was still cloudy. After refilling the water, I didn’t have time to vacuum again that day. Should pool pump be left on recirculate or filter until the next day or the day after when I can get back to vacuum again?
@SwimUniversity

Did you end up watching the first part of the video? Sometimes there's a bigger root issue. And vacuuming too quickly can kick up the flocculant.

I’ve been following these steps for 3 weeks and still can not get my cloudy water to clear up. I even just installed a brand new sand filter 2 weeks ago. I went with a 22” filter since my pool is 22,000 gallons. Filter has been on 24/7. I’m at a loss.

@@kopplinfamily7529yeah I haven't been able to get it to clear up in the deep end area this year all the chemicals are within the right levels except the calcium hardness which is a little low at 120 PPM also on well water with a 22,000 gallon pool. Was told that the calcium hardness being a little low shouldn't cause the cloudiness though only if it was high but this is the first year I've had issues not being able to clear it up hopefully you get it figured out nothing more frustrating than a non- Crystal pool with how much it cost to run the it this year and the cost of chemicals debated on even opening it at all LOL

Is it a cartridge filter or a smaller Intex sand filter? You might want to get a hand-held pool wand vacuum to suck it out (but it doesn't connect to your pool)

My pool was beautiful and clear when we finished our swim. I tested the water with a test strip and everything was balanced and within proper range except chlorine…. The chlorine was at 0 and so I decided to put shock in the pool…. Immediately the pool got cloudy, woke the next morning and its still cloudy….. so what is the problem…. It was clean and beautiful when I added shock and immediately it turned cloudy…. Mildly cloudy HELP!!!
@SwimUniversity

Shock kills the contaminants and it's very normal that it's cloudy afterwards! Clean and run your filter for 24/7. Or use flocculant or a clarifier to speed things up.
@raymondaten2179
@raymondaten2179 Ай бұрын
Another you need to test is phosphate levels, if it's to high not only is that candy for algae, it will also tie up your chlorine levels. If you don't get the dead algae out after a shock treatment, the dead algae can raise phosphate levels. It's a snowball if the phosphate levels get to high.
