This is a review of the Swiss M70 jacket. It is a great piece of military surplus gear for bushcraft, outdoors, survival and hunting. The camo is called Alpenflag and works very well in the eastern woodlands. There is a large amount of storage space on the jacket, more than enough for a 10C survival kit. Adding the rucksack to the jacket increases the swiss m70 jackets impressive storage capacity. Highly recommend finding one of these coats while they are still available.

remember wearing this jacket (and the dungarees) in the mid seventies when doing my service in the swiss army (isone). the camouflage does work very well. despite the dominant red - at least in swiss terrain. and since the swiss army is a strictly defence force only, thats all it needs. glad to see that you guys like this very old garment.

There should be a mesh veil built into the hood, ... originally this pattern was designed by the germans in 1945 (leibermuster camouflage) it was the first camo to have anti-IR built in, after the war the Swiss adopted and improved upon it. ... its a cool jacket, but i would advise spraying it with waterproofing as once soaking wet it takes about 3 days to dry out totally.

At the inner Front of the Jacket placed right and left Side Fabric Bands. They are for connecting the Jacket to the genuine Dungarees to get a better Weight Distribution so the Jacket dont pull to hard down your back. Maybe thats interessting to know. Thanks for showing! Greetings from Germany

The jacket was designed to contain lots of stuff. It was also to be worn over the flak jacket. As a static weapon, heavy mortars, we were given the 14 kg protection. We once filled up complete load. 6 magazines with 24 rounds each, 6 HG43 hand grenades in the leg pockets, backpack, in our parlance a "gazarusa" containing two rifle grenades in the side pockets, food knapsack and digging utensil, a collapsible shovel in my case. To the front hook we hanged our helmet. To this all add our StG57 rifle. We did look like lumbering idiots with all that weight which we reckoned being somewhere around 36 kgs.

For those wondering why this camo is red dominant is because swiss designed them for infra red concealment

Actually that part was done by the Germans in WW2 but without all the red in there. That was added by the Swiss.

Infrared refers to heat there is no color that will hide heat the reason they made it red is so that they can use it in multiple seasons for example the spring summer and fall time without having to change the pattern until the winter.

Nice review. The Swiss military items are some of the best made on the surplus market. I have two sets (jacket, pants, and pack) that I bought a gun show for $10 each. It is a remarkably good system. I usually still use my normal daypack with mine, and carry some of the additional items in the jacket that I would normally need a larger ruck to carry. The negatives in my opinion are that it's pretty much all cotton, except some variants that have rubberized elbow and knee reinforcements. In the snow it's ok, but getting caught in the rain you can get really weighed down. The pattern also tends to be faded in a lot of the sets I've seen. They're not indestructible, but rips can be pretty easily repaired (and most of them on the market have some sewn up tears). My advise, as with all surplus, is to buy it in person if you can. Keep your local army surplus in business and hand pick what you'll be taking home instead of leaving it up to an online retailer.

I’ve have a couple of them. I stated out using it for paint ball and later used it for hunting. They are tough have a lot of pockets. The camo works well especially in the fall. I like the comparison to the gorka. I had looked at the gorka for a while but wasn’t sure how it compared to military surplus that I already own. Thanks for the video

They made this pattern with multiple seasons in mind, the red at a distance fades into this brown that works very well with the terrain the reason they did this is so that I could work decently well in the summer and spring but also work well enough in the fall before the winter came and they would have to change uniforms for account of the snow.

not a sniper jacket, every Swiss infantry man had one like these. So do I. but I am not a Swiss soldier. ;-) The bright red turns into a brown when seen from a distance, the human eye gets tricked, neat effect. from just a few yards it's not obvious, makes you even more visible - but from 30yards and more it's one of the best camo patterns in the world for fall/winter woodland.

Yeah snipers used the TAZ57 M70 coat, but so did all Swiss troops til the 90s. The mesh flap hidden in hood is as much a mosquito net for infantry as it is a sniper veil. The keychain-looking clip on front L is for helmets. The long tubes on pack are for propelled grenade rounds (not a standard sniping weapon) & the pocket inside is for a gun -cleaning kit. Pretty dope w the M70 suspender pants too.

Compared to load bearing of its day it’s a step ahead and also much quieter . You can also remove the sleeves on them if you want more of a vest set up. They also take die well . I think I bought three at 15 bucks each , I’ve got load bearing for life .

That is one badass looking jacket. You can certainly blend in among those maples when they start to turn. I have been using my new Gorka suit for about a month now and love it. One thing I noticed is that the fabric tends to get white as though it is salty or perhaps the cotton is fraying slightly. Have you experienced the same and do you have any Gorka pro tips to offer? I know you have been using your suit for a while now.
@EnduranceRoom
@EnduranceRoom 4 жыл бұрын
thanks! for the gorka, it really helps not to wash them. I hear they fade to white after repeated washing. I have washed mine once in 9 months. If it gets too light, take it outside and run some camo spray paint over it. It could be really cool.

I have one of these. They are very heavy, empty. I loaded it up and went for a 2 hour hike. I got a sore back. All the weight is born by the upper back - no good. To carry the same weight in a pack with a waist belt is better, or using US 1956 web equipment. I think I will try this again wearing a single web belt only on the waist to see if I can transfer some of the weight to the hips.

The jacket is meant to clip into the pants (belt) to balance out the load. How you load the jacket is important as well.

@Christopher Kavanaugh That makes sense. Man, I just bought a flecktarn parka and liner too! Got one of the cotton ones which I like but most people will want Gortex. I'm about a 34"/88cm in the chest but as far as height goes a Gr.Nr. 6 is a perfect fit. Thats the size on my parka/liner. It also goes great with the Austrian mountain/paratrooper jacket. The one that isn't an M65 clone. I wore that combo in MN recently. I looked wild in the BW parka liner during my 11 hour layover at Atlanta airport.

@Christopher Kavanaugh Yeah, I've never had trouble with cotton gear but I don't get it wet. Thats why I bring a poncho. Luckily I haven't run into that particular question. I'm sure I got some looks wearing my woodland M65 in Wyoming but I try to stay away from current issue. Going around in an M65 and a beanie you're more likely to get mistaken for a homeless vet more than anything. Mostly I try to stay with OD green. I love it and it doesn't draw weird attention.
