As a Swiss Catholic I had the privilege of seeing the barracks and armory of the Swiss Papal Guard (is it even a privilege? I don't know ^^). Anyways funny thing is that we saw a Stahlhelm and a MP40 there and wondered what the background story was. Well... A German soldier during WW2 asked for refuge in the Vatican City and he was let in, basically living with the Swiss Guard. He then let his weapon and Helmet there.

I agree on this. Kings and generals always tell story of people or battle or campaign. No disrespect. It was good, but copying quotes form youtube channel Invicta, to tell the history only by battle and strategy is "history without humanity". @@oof5020 : I don´t remember where I found this quote, either from a book published some long time ago by the Brit. Historian Murray Kendall or by another of his colleagues ( French ) Jean Favier ( who is more a specialist of Bonaparte although he wrote also on Louis XI ). I noticed this quotation because I am an admirer of the Swiss History and political system ( although am French ) and it struck my attention that before his death this very prudent king and with such a long sighted political vision took the pain to pay such an tribute to his mountain neighbors who delivered him of the Burgundian nightmare ! And I remembered the king´s sentence, in as much as his remark to his successors about the Swiss who are excellent soldiers " pourvu qu´on les paye bien..." reminded me the famous play of Molière " Les plaideurs" where one of the characters use this sentence : "Point d´argent, point de Suisse" ... Machiavelli is correct with regards to most mercenaries but he was not including the Swiss ones in that statement.
@oof5020
@oof5020 4 жыл бұрын
@@jeffvella9765 Some thoughts Machiavelli had on Switzerland: "when Machiavelli wanted to introduce a successful model for republican government, he not only used the admired but distant classical models of Sparta and Rome and the somehow ambivalent Venetian case, but also the Swiss Confederation. The confederates were “armatissimi e liberissimi,” most free because most armed and ready to defend their liberty as masters of modern warfare (“maestri delle moderne guerre”) the way the Romans had done in antiquity: with an invincible militia army-and not, as Machiavelli’s fellow Italians did, with mercenary troops. The Swiss were strong, victorious, and fearless warriors because they lived in egalitarian “libera libertà” and lacked princes and nobles; the poverty of uncivilized mountaineers (“uomini montanari . . . senza civiltà”) allowed them to stay far away from the corruption of the curia in Rome and to follow their original civic religion. Hence Machiavelli considered the Swiss federative republic to have the best constitution, second only to the expansive republic of the Romans."

I have an ancestor who was in the Swiss Guard at Versailles in the early part of the 17th century. I cannot remember the details and my written records are not at hand. But he was of the surname Mertenat, born in Soyhieres, in what is now Canton Jura, sometime in the 1580s. His brother was my 8x or 9x grest-grandfather. At that time Ct. Jura would have been in the Principality of the Prince-Bishop of Basel, or what was left of it after the reformation turned the city protestant. This Mertenat sent 2 letters to my 8/9x great-grandfather during the 1630s that ended up in the records of the Prince-Bishop (in Porrentruy) as part of an inheritance file (they were later incorporated into Cantonical records if my memory serves me). Specifically, my Mertenat ancestor had the title of Scribe to the Captain of the Swiss Guards while at Versailles. I remember he mentioned in one letter that the young King Louis XIV was a fine, young man to his brother. Parenthetically, when France under Napoleon annexed the Principality as the Department of Mont Terrible many folk in Soyhieres must have not been too happy. My 4x great-grandmother, who was in her mid-60s, married a 14 year old boy, as did two other older women. My 3x great-grandfather, an Imhoff, who was about 18 at the time, married his 1st cousin. All of this was in the new etat-civil records for Soyhieres. After Napoleon was defeated, this area became part of Ct. Bern, but continued with the Napoleonic records. It was there that I found a Catholic priest record an annulment of my 3x great-grandfather's marriage to his first cousin. He wrote that the marriage was nothing but a sham to keep Imhoff out of the Army of the French Republic. It seems that royalist sentiments ran deep even in this younger part of Switzerland.

there is a famous swiss saying that goes: in Grandson das Gut In Murten den Mut In Nancy das Blut Meaning, in grandson the goods, in murten the bravery and in nancy the blood. it refers to the three big battles that the swiss won against the burgundians. after grandson they managed to conquer the cannons and supplies of the burgundians (the goods), in Murten, the burgundians fled into the lake and many of them drowned (because they lost their bravery) and in nancy, it ended with the blood of the burgundian lord. it's a very proud time in swiss history, when the small cantons finally started helping eachother and supporting eachother against the theoretically much more powerful neighbours.

@@junior1497 makes no sense as Swiss fought everywhere as mercenaries. The redescovery of the effectiveness of the pike formation is much more rooted in social changes than military evolution. The pike is the most simple weapon there is, Greeks fought with a pike almost 2000 years before the Swiss pike men but what a pike formation needs is lots of people fighting together, alone and disorganised the pike is useless. The knight was dominant in the middle ages both as a weapon system and as a social order. Its no coincidence that the decline of feudalism went hand in hand with the pike resurgence . Basically the towns started to organise themselves and sell land, nobles were impoverished at times and rented themselves out as mercenaries. People fought for their towns or land instead of their lord which means stronger social cohesion which leads to army cohesion and the increased effectiveness of the pike

I hope Kings and Generals will cover the life of Sir John Hawkwood (known in Italy as Giovanni Acuto "John the Sharp"). The man fought at Crecy and Poitiers, became a mercenary in France, then Italy, and he eventually led the "White Company" (aka The English Company although many nationalities comprised it). He had a 40 year career shrewdly serving city states, Popes, and even Kings and Queens, and sometimes ambassadorial duties for the King of England. He ended his career serving Florence and facilitated its rise to hegemony at the beginning of the Renaissance. A truly remarkable life. He is buried in the Duomo, and honor not even bestowed upon Dante.

Damn it Charles, you had one of the most powerful kingdoms in europe at the time and you just got killed. It pisses me off that Burgundy could have been a powerhouse of early modern europe but instead he died and caused the rivalry between germany and france over their border territories.

@@Rehn98 I don’t think that assessment is fair. I feel like you severely underestimate Burgundy’s power at the time. There is a reason they were in all practicality independent for so long despite being officially part of the kingdom of France. Burgundy was definitely at least if not more powerful than France at that point in time.

189 Pontifical Swiss Guard held their ground against 10,000 Protestant Germany mercenaries. Despite having only halberds and swords, while their foes boasted arquebusiers in addition to zwie-handlers, they killed an estimated 1-2,000 of them before being overwhelmed. You can still see the holes in the wall from where the arquebusiers were taking pot-shots at the Pope along the escape route between the Vatican and Castel Sant'Angelo. What an incredible story.

@@christianriddler5063 the perceived bias I speak of is not one of them spreading falsehood, is one about focus, besides the example of Nordlingen, the presentation about Famagusta was 20 minutes long while the arguable more important Lepanto was below 15 minutes, there was a series of 3 or 4 videos about the indian hero Tecumseh and some about great captains of the Royal Navy, I do not expect them to do something similar about any of the names mentioned above, is not their focus, expertise and / or interest. Rereading my previous comment now I realize it might sound critical or even harshly critical but it was mostly to say to the person above that a video about that topic might not come or if it is made I do not expect to be as detailed or as good as their material about the Roman army.
