Samjiyon Airport was built to serve Mt. Baekdu, the highest mountain in Korea. The mountain is considered as the sacred place for many Koreans (both South and North), as the mythology says it is where the founder of Ancient Korea was born. Of course, the real reason behind why there is an airport is that "officially" Kim Jong Il and Kim Jong Un were born in the mountain. The regime uses this tale as a propaganda to justify the Kim Dynasty's reign.

Samjiyeon is the nearest airport to Mt.Baekdu, which is the highest mountain in Korea Peninsula. They usually use it for visit to the mountain

Hey Swiss, you could actually enter North Korea with your Switzerland passport. You would have to sign up and pay for a guided tour though and can't just show up out of the blue.
