Official Music Video For Switchfoot - Meant To Live (Jon Bellion Version)
A few months ago, the band and I sat down in the studio to listen to the final mix of the song, (“Meant to Live - Jon Bellion Version”). When the strings faded out we sat in silence, stunned by how moving the piece of music was.
A few days later, Jon Bellion and I were texting about the song -how it conjured images in our minds, begging to be used in a trailer for a great movie.
We came to the conclusion: “why not do it ourselves, spend our own money to make a music video that felt like it conveyed the emotion we felt.”
We called James Winterhalter and Joseph Larkin (the makers of the video) to see if they could pull off a short film in only a couple of weeks. They said let’s go!
So that’s what this music video is: a self-funded passion project. A short film about a man, caught between his past and his future, discovering that he still gets to choose. “We want more than the wars of our fathers… Somewhere we live inside. - Jon Foreman of Switchfoot

The lyrics of the song along with the scene with the Dad and his son on the beach has to be a C.S. Lewis reference. “It would seem that Our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.” Excellent cover!

I absolutely love the original. I listened to it as an angst ridden teenager who wanted to be myself so terribly bad. In between then and now, Christ found me and changed my life. Today I am married with 3 kids, and once again this song hits me right between the eyes. It makes me want my life to count for something, to really make a difference. So many of us become shells of the true beauty that God created us to be. We were meant to live for so much more. To be and do good, to love freely and purely. This song drives me to that. It brought tears to my eyes in a way that the original did not, because it means more now. Life means more now. I hope I can impart that to my kids. This version of the song let’s the original’s life-changing message shine through because it slows down. It is more contemplative and soaring, drawing our hearts and minds to absorb the lyrics. I’m very glad it was made.

I lost my dad in May of this year. He was my best friend. This was his favorite band and showed me to them at a very young age. With my dad gone these lyrics mean so much to me. I used to not think too much into these lyrics but an amazing time cause everything was so much more simpler as a kid this song made me happy, but when I hear this song(cover) I just see my dad smiling wanting me to remember why this song made me happy. This song was played at my fathers funeral and holds a strong spot in my heart. Takes me back to better times.

Lyrics.... Fumbling his confidence And wondering why the world has passed him by Hoping that he's bet for more than arguments And failed attempts to fly Fly We were meant to live for so much more Have we lost ourselves? Somewhere we live inside Somewhere we live inside We were meant to live for so much more Have we lost ourselves? Somewhere we live inside Dreaming about providence And whether mice or men have second tries Maybe we've been living with our eyes half open Maybe we're bent and broken Broken We were meant to live for so much more Have we lost ourselves? Somewhere we live inside Somewhere we live inside We were meant to live for so much more Have we lost ourselves? Somewhere we live inside We want more than this world's got to offer We want more than this world's got to offer We want more than the wars of our fathers And everything inside screams for second life Yeah We were meant to live for so much more Have we lost ourselves? We were meant to live for so much more Have we lost ourselves? We were meant to live for so much more Have we lost ourselves? We were meant to live (we were meant to live) We were meant to live

Then as I grew up, it felt like every album was written for me with every stage I was in. Jon is an incredibly wise man and God has given him insight into things no one else has and it's beautiful. Thank you for being apart of my childhood and I hope one day I get to meet Switchfoot and play on stage with them, one of 2 artists I hope to do that with.

Can’t even begin to explain how unbelievable it is that my favorite artist of all time, and the person who inspired me to make music (Jon Bellion) was himself inspired to make music by Switchfoot, a band whose music has had a profound impact on my faith in my life. This video conveys a very real topic that I'm currently relating to. Now older and having a 3 year old son...I constantly remind myself not to get frustrated. Impatient. And to be better than my father was....so that my son can be better than I am. I constantly remind myself what it felt like when my father would scream and get impatient with me, and understanding that I would never want my boy to feel that. The side of me that wishes to show my father this wonders if he would even care.

That hits hard. Great video, and a wonderful version of this song. I like the slight change in pace and the change of style that makes this more somber. This song has been my all time favorite- Car accident in 2019 shattered my humerus bone above my elbow right arm did 4 hours of surgery- aug 23-19 2020 - February 17 - 2 different staph infections in my right elbow never spread after surgery my doctor thought I was going into a coma but didn’t - 4 nights in hospital and 2 months of hospital visits for medication and wound care- - 9 months of therapy and now chiropractor when needed- but no medal in my arm and I can bend it way better than before- just can’t straighten it all the way out yet still working hard on it - But I’m glad to be alive and wasn’t hurt badly- A person ran a stop sign- in 2019 - but I’m always thankful each day

I love this song as always. But I must say that this version left me thinking with tears for 5 minutes after finishing the song, without doing anything else, and yes... yes friends, you fulfilled your purpose with this beautiful video, you can be at peace because the economic investment and of the soul was worth every blessed second. Thank you for helping to connect the past with the future, and motivating to repair it in the present with love, especially with God's love and forgiveness. A hug from many years following them. Edward

This is without a doubt one of the most powerful music videos I’ve ever seen. What beautiful imagery of not only battling the toxicity before you but most importantly forgiving those who hurt us.
