I think about a 2nd act career change after i hit a certain saving/investment goal and this video is excellent for knowing where to start in finance. Thanks Josh!

Took the series 7 back in the late 80’s. It’s a bear of a test but great knowledge to have. Yes I passed it😉 Had Fidelity account for years got up to $500k. Wanted an in-person meeting to discuss planning going forward and willing to pay a fee for their advisory service. Couldn’t get a return phone call let alone a meeting. Left and went to Merrill.

This was super helpful as I'm transitioning from fundraising to finance. I was very set on Fidelity and similar institutions, but now will consider banks!

Being a good financial planner should require a holistic look at the client's current situation and merge them with the client's long term goals. There is way more than just this investment vs. that investment.

I would love to be a financial coach or planner to help people out when i retire in 2.5 year. So many people are so lost when it comes to money, young and old.

TY. I am going to be sending out resumes en masse to Fidelity and others. With a Masters in Accounting, EA, CPA, heavy finance coursework (calculus based), I should not be holding down two COJs at minimum wage! I'm tired, man.

Fidelity and others don't care about an MBA or your CPA. What matters is getting new clients to open an account, and a lot of them!

I would definitely consider this move carefully. A civil engineer is a solid career that pays well. In this situation, you are likely taken a large pay cut and the job isn’t going to be what you think. You will be taking service calls answering questions about balances, trades, ect. Your calls will be monitored and you will be at the mercy to customer service surveys. Your bosses are going to monitor every second you are away from the phone. It will like take you 3-5 years to get to an advice role. The gig is not a bad gig as someone just starting out, but in this scenario you are giving up a relatively successful career. I’d say if you want to be in the industry at this point, work on getting your cfp in the off hours. Then build up a planning business like good old Josh slowly over time.

I retire in 10 days. I am excited but a little nervous. The interesting thing is that at my retirement party I was offered 2 jobs and my employer would like me to come back and work part time. There is a shortage of people who are willing to work. I will see how things play out. I may go back to work after a while, by that time there will likely be no jobs because that is my luck. Well this morning I am excited about it and not nervous.

My experience, the financial planner at Fidelity was a salesperson.

@@alphamale2363 It's up to you. I didn't like that my "contact person" at Fidelity was a middleman and not the one responsible for my investments. US investments are managed by a department. They also pushed a hedge fund with high fees. Then there's a different department for foreign investments (and an additional fee). It seemed convoluted and expensive. Been there, done that, not interested.

Just so you know that wasn't Josh replying. Just a bot. Missing the required grade on important exams really is discouraging. Wondering if it is worth it is a natural reaction. Unfortunately most of us aren't really prepared to deal with such setbacks - very few are. Please don't let the setback stop you. When you do get past it and have a successful career it may surprise you when you learn the other successful people you have looked up to also had similar challenges. You aren't alone bud.

To me, the problem with working for a major broker or financial planning firm is that you have to follow their strategies and maybe even sell their products. If you have unconventional views or think alternative investments have their place in portfolios, most likely they won't like that. I don't like cookie cutter stuff based on mainstream financial planning and academic finance.

Frankly, as a Financial Rep, you will NOT be licensed to give recommendations. More senior roles WILL incorporate this, but just to get your foot in the door, this comment is essentially irrelevant…The good news is, if you don’t agree with the company, you can always move to a company more in your realm!

Like most of these investment outfits a new employee isn't going to make much money, and you will probably have to answer to a clown manager that thinks he is a hedge fund manager. The only way to make any money in this business is to have a book. Then you don't have to listen to some jerk manager telling you what to do. Managers are guys that couldn't make it on their own but think that they are big time executives. It is a very tough business to get started in unless you know where there is a large pool of money. I was in the business for 47 years. However, if you have a book of business then the management will leave you alone, because they are not paying you, your clients are.

My friend is the Vice President & CFO at Fidelity for the past 20 years. He’s wonderful. He was telling me the other day that he’s tired of the “corporation crapola.” I don’t think it’s possible to get away from all the restrictions.

Thank You so much for this information 🙏 I've been tryna get into the Finance Business for a while now! I've had interviews with credit unions and 1 bank and have never been selected..... I recently applied to fidelity for Customer Relationship Advocate where they will provide me with the SIE, SERIES 7 AND SERIES 63 but the position is not for advice or selling, but solely helping customers with there current investment accounts. It is strictly call center type position. At 1st I was excited because it is something of the Financial world. But I am personally more interested in building Relationships with people in real Financial Planning! I had my 1st interview, scheduled to have a 2nd after credit check, than the 3rd with an actual hiring manager. Thankfully the company is really good at making sure it is the place for you! I've been asked this a few times, and they stress one does their research on the company before hire. So I've been searching the web trying to find the differences between banks/credit unions and investment companies, and which will be more aligned with my aspirations in the industry. Thank You So Much For This Information 💗 I will definitely keep applying to credit unions till I'm hired🙂

Banks and credit unions are for savings accounts and checking accounts. They don't want to pay you for what you do, and they are very risk averse. If you were to become successful they will try to find a way not to pay you for what you have done. I worked for a short time for Wells Fargo. They want to steal your accounts and not pay you. That is why I quit and would never work for a bank.
