LAHAKAI SAILING // ⛵️ S1 Ep7 // Our boat restoration project and electric boat conversion journey continues! We are unboxing and prepare for the installation of our Torqeedo 5hp Pod Drive electric boat motor. Our boat will be a fully electric boat and we are saying goodbye to diesel. We'll take you through all the components and pieces that come with the motor, as well as a few other things we bought. Our boat building goals are to create a fully electric boat to liveaboard and sail around the world.

the technology is good but hopefuly when there is no wind the energy last long enough to reach a destination. also if the boat will kollide with a whale or other very big fish you can eventually lost your whole motor. you should secure it eventually wit a screwable steelcage.
@lahakai
@lahakai Жыл бұрын
We are glad you mentioned this. We were considering putting a cage or something protective to prevent bumps on the motor. Though Torqeedo shows the motor as durable, it definitely can't withstand a whale, not much could! The motor will be powered with 3 elements, solar, hydraulic and hydrogenation. We will need to do tests to see how much time and power we get off the engine vs theoretical.

@@MrBobVick different brand and also type. Uma has a Saildrive where the electric motor sits inside of the hull and the prop is driven by a short shaft and a 90° degrees Gearbox. The one from Torqeedo is a Pod-drive, no shaft or gearbox and the motor sits outside, less components to worry about and the motor gets cooled by water directly. But my thoughts went to Sailing Uma too initially.

Torqueedo has a great product and their offering an upgrade like they did was a smooth bit of promotionalism. You benefit by receiving an engine with double the power and they receive a heartfelt promotion of their 'gift' on Lahakai's channel. Seeing their garage made me think of all of the world's fledgling mechanics who got their start in almost identical 'shops' as their boat shed.

It certain works out for both of us! Torqueedo has great products and we can't wait to see this motor in action. We love being part of showcasing technology that is not only better for the environment but really improves boating in general. And so many people started in garages and made it big, not just Torqeedo and other mechanics! Apple, Amazon, Disney, HP, just to name a few! If we had a time machine, we'd go back and make our parents build a garage so we could have started something big 😂😂

Interesting video. We are an electric boat (Electric Volt) on a Bristol 35 sloop, presently sailing the Bahamas, finally realizing our mind set had to change to be successful with an electric motor. Now we consider ourselves a boat without an engine, sailing up to the harbor entrance then motoring in. Please realize your mindset may change too, but we love our electric motor.

I love that you are going electric. If I was to refit an old yacht, I'd definitely go full electric. There are so many benefits to doing this - less noise (and smell), less weight, better for the environment and the pod motor being under the hull, means more room inside the cabin. I think it's great that the prop can also be utilised to charge the batteries when under sail. BTW, the fluffy attachment is for the 'spinning wheel charging station'. I can't wait to see how it works.

It will spin with power for a bit to fold out and the waterflow will keep it spinning when power is turned off. Centrifugal force will keep it unfolded and generation of energy is happening. To fold the propeller one has to stop the spin by stopping the shaft. Or slowing down the boat.

Hi … you are going to instal cathodes and anodes in the hull ? And have you check if in the hold near the batteries you do not need also to instal them ? That is very important to avoid corrosion of metal and electrical circuits … I think sure you also know that the surface of the batteries will stand should in wood, or rubber or another material that isolate contact with the metal of the hull. The eletric engine looks 👌
