How difficult is it to switch from Shimano STI road/cyclocross shifters to SRAM DoubleTap? I've been on Shimano road components since 1994 and have recently purchased a cyclocross bike with SRAM. Here's my experience with how that switch has done.

I bought gravel bike with Apex 1 this June. It took me about 2 hours to adapt. I was using Shimano's STI with my road bike earlier. The thing I like the most about SRAM's DoubleTap is that brake lever does not change position, so I can have better control over braking while changing gears.

Not really on topic to this but I did go from Shimano Ultegra 6800 to Sram Red Etap, which uses the shift paddles a completely different way, and I found it to be the most intuitive system I've come across. The right paddle shifts easier, left harder and both at the same time shift the front. Extremely easy to get used to. I could never get used to the regular double tap though.

This is THE most helpful video I've been able to find on this subject. I'm just starting a build to referb an old MTB into a gravel bike and have been considering SRAM because they seem to have more flexibility in their platform to get wide-ranging gravel gears with mechanical braking. Thanks for this!

just did my first CX race on a real CX bike using the SRAM double tap. I had NEVER used it before. Seriously, my MTN bike had a mechanical, so my teammate grabbed his spare CX bike and put me on it 10 minutes before the race I had NO problems adapting from my MTN Bike shifter to the double tap. So much fun!!! Brad Cat 5

Thank you so much for this video. I had my new Cube CX bike delivered to work yesterday which I am cycling home on tonight. I had no idea of the difference between the gear shifting! I only looked on here to see what Double Tap was, I thought it was just a way of jumping up a few gears! If it wasn't for this I would have ended up stuck in the hardest gear all the way home thinking it was faulty. Cheers.

Your missed shifts could be mitigated by playing with SRAM's reach adjust. This is feature that is commonly underused but is really nice. I have rode SRAM for a while in both CX and Road, I made the leap in 2010. Personally i think the reliability and feeling is way better then shimano. When shifting from the hoods with shimano i used to have issues grabbing the brake when i was shifting in technical sections. I really enjoy the SRAM double tap when sprinting in the drops you can draw in the shifter and maintain a more secure grip for down shifting when muscling the bike at full gas. SRAM FOR LIFE!

I recently built a touring bike. I went 1x, which drives the touring purists crazy. I also went with Force 1. It really didn’t take long to get the hang of it - maybe 20 miles. I like it fine. I have no trouble going back and forth between SRAM and my Shimano bikes.

Great video. I just picked up a used road bike with SRAM Apex components. I wasn't crazy about the idea because I've always ridden Shimano, but when I test rode the bike, I realized immediately that the double tap system was sweet. Same as you, I find the biggest advantage in the drops. I have small hands, so it is a pain to have to reach around so far to get into a bigger cog with the Shimano system. Thanks for posting this video.

My road bike is an old Specialized Roubaix with an equally old Shimano 105 triple groupies. When I built up a drop-bar commuter rig, I already had a SRAM ViaGT trigger-shifter 10-speed groupset but, lo and behold, SRAM's Exact Actuation works for MTB, Urban and Road shifters. With a set of Apex shifters, it worked just fine even after I totaled the ViaGT RD and substituted an X-9 MTB RD. That's a lot of words to say that I ride BOTH Shimano STI and SRAM double-tap regularly. Except for the odd occasion when I try to push a SRAM brake lever for a shift, I have no trouble at all. People shift from Campy with thumb shifting to Shimano or SRAM -- I'm not sure this is a really big deal, even for a retiree like me.

Having used friction-on-the-downtube since 1970, made more shifting mistakes switching to STI in 2004 than when I switched to doubletap in 2012. And I don't pinch my fingers when shifting and braking simultaneously. I preferred the reach adjustability with SRAM, too. Still using the same Force 10-speed ten years later.

As an experienced team and bicycle shop mechanic I can tell that Sram is a more reliable in terms of adjustment. Is very intuitive and super durable. Like you said, Sram feels more mechanical while Shimano is more subtle when shifting. I am not saying that Shimano is bad but I prefer Sram either for mountain or road bicycle...

I was about to buy a Sutra LTD, and the sole reason the LTD came with SRAM levers made me consider the regular Sutra, which shares the same frame and gives the possibility to leave it as LTD with Shimano parts. Well, after a thorough Excel draft, I've come to realize I would spend more money to leave that regular Sutra to the LTD level, but not even getting hydraulic brakes! I needed a SRAM/Shimano comparison, clicked KZfaq and I am glad I've found you. All my fears were based on that non-sense double tap. I thank you for demystifying my misleading concepts. Going LTD :) Thx

Brakes are connected to mechanical Hayes CX Expert disc brakes and works so well compared to any rim brakes I've had. Very impressed with double tap and the budget Apex group..

My experience is pretty similar. The upshift is harder on Sram(find it really annoying) and the downshift is faster and just feels better. I am a big Shimano fan but I have to say I love the click on the Sram. I don't think it's more precise that Shimano, just that that really positive click makes you think it is.

I've been using Shimano my entire life. I was not very happy with Shimano 105 and Ultegra after switching from Tiagra. At first I bought mechanical Sram Rival and soon upgraded to hydraulic Force (found an amazing deal on the levers and calipers). I ride a "gravel" bike that's used more or less like an old timey rigid XC bike with 45mm tyres and it sees a lot of heavy duty use. SRAM was a perfect fit and I haven't looked back since. I've gotten used to the shifting within a single ride and I prefer how the shifting action feels; it's very positive, pronounced. SRAM is more reliable thanks to the longer cable pull. No matter what I'm riding over, no matter how hard I pedal, it just keeps on shifting. The levers also feel a lot better in my hand than Shimano's STIs (this is subjective) and since I ride on the drops a lot, I really appreciate the ridiculous range of the reach adjustment of the hydraulic levers. Probably the only objective downside is that SRAM is generally more expensive than Shimano and subjectively, I've heard of people who haven't gotten used to the shifting mechanism and also some people don't like being the odd one in the group, since vast majority of road bikes run Shimano.

Campagnolo offers easier downshifts because the total lever throw is about half of SRAM or shimano to shift 3 gears. Combine that with the fact that it is assisted by a clock spring so you aren't fighting the derailleur springs, and downshifts are easier still. Some people don't like the thumb lever, but its a much shorter throw to upshift than the competitors, and allows you to upshift 5 sprockets in one throw (great for cresting a hill). All these functions are possible because it uses a spring detent system rather than a ratchet.
@Driver8takeabreak
@Driver8takeabreak 6 жыл бұрын
Yes. Best of both worlds. You can dump 3+ gears either direction with Campy. I love that about it. Also (similar to SRAM I believe) you can shift while breaking.
@Driver8takeabreak
@Driver8takeabreak 6 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah, you can also do a little bit of adjustment to your shifts with Campy, so it feels less robotic and mechanical, I like that.
@LeoInterHyenaem

The thumb lever works fine, but it is much more vulnerable to breakage. Also, Campagnolo's shifting implementation appears to be less technical, more rudimentary. Effective, but less technical.
@daverts
@daverts 5 жыл бұрын
For those accustomed to SRAM/Shimano single upshift action, Campy Powershift has a lighter action and the thumb button is angled down like with EPS so that the hand doesn't need to be rotated up to put your thumb on the buttton. I've been riding ErgoPower for over 20 years, so that the wrist roll is completely intuitive and fast for me now. Campy is single lever/single action, has more secure brake levers like SRAM, and is lighter than ShimaNO. The shifting feel is very mechanical- Campy wears in, not out. STI is great for newbies and those with limited hand strength though.

I just swapped out my Shimano 105s for SRAM (Red shifters, everything else Force). I took it for a first ride this morning and I can confirm the switch is definitely easy. Maybe once or twice I caught myself trying to push the brake lever to shift to a larger cog in the beginning of the ride, but that is about it. Super easy to reprogram myself. Much less daunting than you could imagine.

@daverts
@daverts 5 жыл бұрын
Christian Romero: STI does over more leverage for shifts up to bigger cogs since the whole lever is used. The trade off is heavier weight and more free play lever slop. Racers prefer Doubletap or Campy ErgoPower, but recreational rides often like STI.

Is made the switch. Felt at home immediately. The mis-shifts used to happen way more often on Shimano levers, as I was sometimes pressing both levers at once, absolutely disorientating the system;). Brakes... It’s hard to believe in 2020, but there are acutually people riding a rim brake road bike. When it comes to Rim brakes SRAM offers modulation that is much better for me.

True I think most of My experience apply to non disk/hydro SRAM group sets; They are simpler to operate, have a more mechanical positive sound and response. Never had to do adjustments to shifters but I heard it can take more time and effort but I still like it; seems to Me is manlier if I may say! Have not tried the eagle single front ring but Am sure it just makes things easier SRAM style!

Road groupset opinion Shimano supports climbing of the cassette/down gearing while braking Shimano shifting is smoother with less resistance Sram shifting is precise, loud (sounds like music when installed on a titanium frame) and satisfying Sram offers full control of the brake lever without any accidental side to side movement of the lever on rough ground Sram is easier to switch between gears in the drops Sram has adjustable reach of the shifter paddle Sram offers completely wireless shifting Sram supports full cross chaining on 22 gear systems (big/big and small/small) Srams front mech doesn't need a trimmer and suffers zero chain rub Sram offer narrow wide chain rings with clutch derailleur for a superior offroad 1x system Srams hydraulic disc calipers offer superior stopping power over Shimano's Srams force and red groupset looks so much sexier than Shimano's ultegra and dura ace (totally subjective I know)

I did had a lot of miss shift especially during the first few weeks and I ranted about how poor is the shifting mechanism, but after some period of getting used to the double tab, I'd say there's no going back to STI. To me that swinging move of down shifting in STI is too much of an effort especially in the drop. There was one time when i jump on my friend's shimano equipped bike and suddently feel panic as if I have forgot how to shift the STI which I had rode for years. That being said, I too feel that shimano has an upper hand in the disc brake part, not only does the hood shapes better and the pad clearance is way more forgiving then SRAM's, not to mention the difficulties of buying spare parts...

Great video, Clint! My gravel bike has a Sram Apex 1x shift system with a Rival BB30 crankset. My main road bike is Campagnolo Record. It was a pretty easy thing to get used to the double tap. I'm beginning to have some arthritis in my hands now, my thumbs in particular, so those thumb buttons on the Campy ergo levers are beginning to cause some discomfort on long rides. My road bike is rim brake. I'm thinking about switching it over to either Sram Force 22 or Shimano Ultegra. It's a tough decision. I like Shimano's bottom bracket design better for BSA frames, but I think that I prefer the greater adjustability of the SRAM levers. I've heard some gripes about Sram's GXP bottom brackets and cranks eating up bearings three times a day. Do you have any experience with GXP and if so, have you had wear issues with it, or is your bike sporting a BB30 crank?

If you click and release the butting it is instant, there is a slight delay if you click and hold to execute a multi shift, just so you don't multi shift by accident, my friends Di2 does the same thing.

I'm talking about signal transfer speed. Wireless will always be slower. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eNeEptuk0d-XoHU.html

Yeah and if you see my comment on that video, you will understand the flawed assumptions made in regards to shifting speed. As for signal transfer speed this has more to do with the protocols being used than the interface. Transferring data between two directly connected computers one with 10T ethernet and one with gigabit and you will have drastically different speeds even though you are using the same cable. Also considering the exceptional small data packets being sent the latency would have to be enormous for it to be noticeable.

I rented a gravel bike recently to try gravel riding. It came with the double tap SRAM shifter. I did love the gravel experience; but not the shifter. I have been a road cyclist for years and have always used Shimano. This double tap technology was confusing. I respect those who love it but it sure was not my favorite thing.

Clint, I've just installed a 2x11 speed SRAM Force drivetrain on my gravel bike. Officially, the "Wifli" rear derailleur is rated for a maximum 32 tooth cog. Occasionally I do an event that calls for REALLY low gearing (ex Deerfield Dirt Road Randonee - 14,000 feet of climbing in a day). It would be great to be able to put in an MTB cassette with 42 tooth cog. I'm thinking maybe I could install the SRAM 1x rear derailleur for these events, which is rated for 42T. Do you see any reason that wouldn't work with a 2x drivetrain? The only thing I can think of is cage capacity, but as long as I don't cross chain it like an idiot, the 2x setup actually requires less capacity than 1x. If you have any thoughts I would appreciate them.

I don't particularly like the shape and feel of sram road levers, that's my biggest reason for sticking with Shimano.

A little off-topic, but not unimportant: I wish, SRAM and others ditched the 6-bolt rotor mounts and resorted to the use of Shimano's CentreLock standard in their brake rotors, too. To Me, the CentreLock hubs not only allow for faster and easier rotor removal and installation, but the mount looks and feels more polished. Does anyone know if it is possible to upgrade to CentreLock hubs and rotors, while using SRAM's shifter-brake combination? Also, My understanding is that Shimano have no equivalent to SRAM's 1-42 cassettes, do they?

I swapped my Cannondale Slate over to a rival 1x last winter. Love it. My only complaint is how hard it is to find bikes with SRAM groupsets from the Manufacturer. (Cannondale has since seen the light with 2018 Slates which are now SRAM 1x only - as they should have been all along. SRAM 1x is perfect for that bike)

do you think that sram has better protection against mud? sometimes when i crash, the brake lever activates and scoops all the mud to the inside. it's a pain to clean. it also gets into the internal gears etc.

I have a question about the ergonomics of the SRAM system I want to upgrade from cable discs on shimano to hydro and I am considering the SRAM system but I wonder about the shape of the hoods how are they when riding for longer periods compared to shimano ?

I don't think it should be a concern at all. The downshift paddle on Sram is a little bit bigger and I find it easier to push

Missing gears happens with shimano as well! If you move both levers by accident they cancel each other and you need to reset the system by pressing the small lever and then shift.
@fpeter01
@fpeter01 3 жыл бұрын
Ofc. If you want to shift to a bigger gear and you accidentaly touch the other lever, the shifting doesn't work. It's happens with gloves more often. The front shifting bothers me much more. Shifting up to a bigger chain ring is hard. I often use rather the rear shifter. (Ed: 105 set)

All SRAM 1x systems are the same in terms of setup, here is the official SRAM manual: sram-cdn-pull-zone-gsdesign.netdna-ssl.com/cdn/farfuture/NrzIjpwHiur3lTv_9ljJeooBpx7LD-lz3-z84Hj1w4U/mtime:1500485634/sites/default/files/techdocs/95-7518-007-000_rev_a_1x_road_system_user_manual.pdf GCN also has a video about setting up a SRAM road 1x.

Quite the opposite particularly with lower end road bikes, you'll only find Shimano not Sram. I have just built up a road bike and it took me ages to find a 10 speed force groupset it's 5 years old and shifts like a new groupset..

for me doesnt really matter, if it does. cycling teams would never bother using groupset other than sram double tap.
