In a speech to the Council of States, he had taken a particularly radical stance, to the point of angering the Germans, among others. He reproached them for their imperialism and urged the upper house not to let them have Vorarlberg. The Federal Council distanced itself from this position, thus accelerating Calonder's political isolation. Calonder resigned in 1920"
